THAILAND- Rain Begins, Good Air Again!
Thailand: Rainy season starts, bad air gone. Everyone has been concerned about air quality in Thailand this year, 2019. Last year had an extended rainy season that allowed 3 growing seasons so there was one third more agricultural waste to burn than a normal year. Thai air quality improves with the coming of the rains.
For those wondering “Can I breathe in Thailand in 2019?” YES! The bad air left when the rainy season arrived. The bad air in Thailand started leaving about May 15th and almost every city in Thailand is now showing GOOD air, except Bangkok, which is almost into the good rankings now, too.
Industrial, automotive and truck, and agricultural burning all contribute to the annual problem: There was bad air in Thailand 2019 but it lasted about 60 days. When the air is bad, it traps heat so this was a warmer April that the past two years.
How rainy is it? For the last two weeks, we experienced 3 to 4 rains a week. Typically, they are hit-n-run showers that rarely last more than 15 or 20 minutes. In Hollywood’s enthusiasm for drama, they have elevated monsoon season beyond what it really is.
Thailand: Rain starts, bad air gone is what happens every year, now that the rains have started, tourist volume in Chiang Mai, where I’m based, has risen sharply although during this years bad air period, tourism dropped significantly, which is understandable. Thailand gets around 15% of it’s income from tourism.
Our 249 videos at RAZOR’S EDGE- THAILAND are largely about ex-pat life in Asia, mainly Thailand, but we have videos about Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar, Malaysia, and New Zealand. We try to upload weekly on Saturday between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM East Coast time. (Which is Saturday evening here in Thailand.)
We cover as many things THAI as possible, food, attractions, activities, temples, parks, waterfalls, the beaches, the Thai Islands, travel inside Thailand, motorcycles, fruit, festivals, police checkpoints, safety, antiques, visas, girls, night markets, day markets, street food, drones, travel photography, and even the weather.
Check out for a elephant show, or check out for an ex-pats view on living in Thailand.
We’re happy you chose to watch the video and would love to see you suscribe and join our group exploring Thailand, it’s bigger than California and South Carolina combined, and larger than Spain. Thailand is one of the top ten tourist destinations on Earth and Bangkok is the most visited city on Earth.
Air is so dirty in Thailand that Premier flies to see it
Chiang Mai: The air hanging over Thailand’s far north has become so polluted, the prime minister went on Tuesday to see in person what is being called a severe health crisis.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha arrived by helicopter at an army base in Chiang Mai, a tourist destination where seasonal haze was unusually bad and prolonged this year.
The thick grey smoky air has largely hidden the forested mountains that surround the city, and many schools have closed. Pollution levels have soared into the hazardous zone and remained there for many weeks, putting the city at the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities on many days, although readings often fluctuate by time of day. Much of the current pollution has been caused by the burning of forest undergrowth by villagers to make it easier to gather mushrooms and other products for sale. The burning often occurs at night, lighting the sky but making it hard to catch the perpetrators.
The city is vulnerable as mountains that surround it trap the pollution. The problem has been worse this year because of a drier-than-usual dry season. In weeks, farmers are expected to start burning corn fields to clear them for planting, prolonging the pollution.
