Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clanhouse in Penang Malaysia. The entrance may not look interesting, but walk further inside to see one of the grandest clan temple in the country. Due to its location in the UNESCO World Heritage area of George Town, it is a popular attraction for tourists.

Khoo Kongsi is one of Georgetown’s most interesting attractions. Built some 650 years ago, it is part of the goh tai seh (five big clans) that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in olden-days Penang. One of Penang’s most lavishly decorated kongsis, it is located on Jalan Acheh, off Lebuh Pitt.

The Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clanhouse with elaborate and highly ornamented architecture, a mark of the dominant presence of the Chinese in Penang, Malaysia.
The famous Khoo Kongsi is the grandest clan temple in the country. It is also one of the city's major historic attractions. The clan temple has retained its authentic historic setting, which includes an association building, a traditional theatre and the late 19th century rowhouses for clan members, all clustered around a granite-paved square.
It is located in Cannon Square in the heart of the oldest part of the city of George Town, in the midst of narrow, winding lanes and quaint-looking pre-War houses exuding a palpable old world charm.

It's our last few weeks here in Malaysia. Lyvonn and I thought it'll be a great idea to spend a weekend with our parents in Penang. It also helps us put together an article that we're truly passionate about - Penang.
Why you ask? Well Penang is not only a place in Malaysia with loads of culture and activities, it is also a food heaven - and yes, Malaysians do love their food. Whilst most people in the world eat to live, Malaysians will gladly agree with the reverse statement that we live to eat.
Penang in my opinion is amongst the most interesting places in the world, it's culture and heritage is just so evident everywhere you go. It is no wonder why UNESCO rated it amongst the world heritage sites.
In the short time that I'm in Penang, I've only manage to cover a few places. Partially because I'm such a sucker for heritage and cultural sights, I'd spend hours thralling through each and every one of them. Even that, my video turned out to be a 12 minutes.
That said, I had to break it up into a 3 part series to make it more palatable. I hope you guys enjoy part 1 below - it's all about Khoo Kongsi clanhouse in Penang.

Penang, Malaysia – A Tour of the History and Cultures
In this program, ECONEWS shows the history and cultures of the Malaysian port-city of Georgetown, once a British fortress-colony, now an international destination for visitors from all over the world.
Pictured above, the Leong San Tong, perhaps the most majestic Chinese clanhouse in South East Asia. Seen from above, blocks of houses and shop-apartments surround this temple. Visitors must wind through a maze of alleys.
The surrounding buildings and narrows streets served to defend the temple from the periodic outbreaks of ethnic conflicts.
Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, or Khoo Kongsi for short, is one of the most distinctive Chinese clan associations in Malaysia. It is well known worldwide for its extensive lineage that can be traced back 650 years, as well as its closely-knit and defensive congregation of buildings and a magnificent clanhouse.
Surprisingly, famous as it is, its location appears to be unknown to many Penangites. It is situated at the southwest of Georgetown, and its pivotal building, Leong San Tong, is hidden amidst the crowded gridiron of terrace houses and shophouses. To make it to Leong San Tong, which is
you will need to tread through an alley between two rows of 19th century terrace houses and bypass the opera stage, before you see it stand majestically on the granite square.

В 19-м веке клан представлял собой государство в государстве, а его штаб- квартира была и правительством и финансовым и образовательным и социальным центром этого государства. Китайский клановый дом, это дом, где прибывшим в Малайзию китайцам клан оказывал помощь деньгами, жильем и работой ещё с 17 века. Постройка кланового храма, посреди квартала Ку началась в конце 19-го века и закончилась в 1850 г., когда клан находился в зените влиятельности и богатства на острове. Самые высокооплачиваемые умельцы из Китая и Малайзии отделывали и украшали резьбой из камня, дерева и кости каждый сантиметр здания в стиле, характерном для храмов Фуцзянь. Крыша храма – сама по себе произведение искусства. На стенах – истории из жизни Великих Предков рода. В настоящее время Khoo Kongsi превращен в музей и здесь можно полюбоваться великолепной архитектурой и познакомиться с историей клана. Помимо сохранившейся в идеальном состоянии оригинальной архитектуры дома, здесь также оборудован небольшой музей, рассказывающий о быте и жизни китайской общины в 19-м веке, об истории клана Ку Конгси. Также здесь располагается художественная галерея.
На Пенанге по прежнему продолжают существовать и действовать клановые дома современных китайских общин, но вход туристам туда запрещен.
