This spectacular access road to Doi PhuKha National Park is part of famed Doi Phukha Loop, along with R1081.
It begins its journey eastwards and upwards from Pua to Bo Kluea across sharp ridge lines towards Doi Dong Ya Wai at height of 1,939m providing one of the most jaw-droppingly scenic rides in Thailand. Truly one memorable ride through thick forest and across switchbacks, tight corners, scenic viewpoints, sweeping curves and standing rows of steep mountains, including 1980m high Doi Phukha itself.

Iconic Route 1256 - Part 2 covering ride from Doi Phu Kha Viewpoint to salt mining village of Bo Klua, Nan Province. it is all the way downhill from the viewpoint, experiencing dramatic drop in elevation: altitude change of over 1,000 meters over length of only 12 kilometers.

Riding on Highway 1256 in a loop through the mountains of Nan province with the eventual destination of Chiang Rai. Stunning scenery and we almost had the road to ourselves, and this was not even the best road we experienced on our 4 day trip.

The dam named after Thailand's King is an imposing concrete arch structure on the Ping River. This artificial lake covers an area of 300 km² and is the largest in Thailand. Located in Khao Kaew, Sam Ngao district of Tak and was built from 1958-1964.

While searching for Mlabri tribe location, ended up in a tiny village along scenic Route 4010. Passing by resident realized I am kinda lost and offered help to locate the tribe. Turns out, she (Khun Para Singh) owns an amazing homestay 20 meters down the road. Spent her entire life in Bangkok, finally quit big city and settled here permanently. THB 1000 per night, includes tastefully furnished rooms with showers, safe parking, free dinner on day of arrival and breakfast following day. You may even sleep in tent conveniently placed just in front of the room or set your own camp at the terrace (for the price of THB 300). Homestay offers magnificent views of nearby rice fields and mountains, featuring little creek running right through the property. ???????? Ride Into The Sunrise - Phu Ruea, Loei
Apparently the coldest spot in Thailand, Phu Rua Sunrise Viewpoint in Loei Province of Thailand. Rode up at 5am to catch the sunrise and to our surprise hundreds of local tourists were already there. Entry into National Park is THB 220 for foreigners, ride steep road all the way up to the top.

???????? Mlabri Tribe: The Spirit of Yellow Leaf - Border of Nan & Phrae
This was my second visit to Mlabri tribe village, the smallest ethnic group in South-East Asia. This time I brought my riding pals.
During the first visit, I promised myself to try help somehow; hence we delievered pick-up load of goodies, just little something to bring smile to their faces.
We also met Pastor Eugene and his wife Mary Long. For all those who suspect this man had ulterior motives such as introducing Christianity to these people, let me assure you that is not the case: he is simple and good man who just wants to help while tribal men and women remain animists.
Mlabri have been called “the most interesting and least understood people in Southeast Asia”. The first Western people to come across these elusive nomadic jungle people came in 1936, when an Austrian explorer Dr H Bernatzik, conducted a survey on the people inhabiting the forests of Nan Province in Northern Thailand. At the time, they were thought to be possibly, the last people on the planet to go completely unclothed. These shy aboriginal people, have no written language, no tribe leaders.
The Mlabri refers to people living in the forest, consists of two words; “Mla” means “people” and “Bri” means “forest”. Thai people refer to them as Phi Tong Lueang (“Spirits of the Yellow Leaves”); the expression comes from the Thai view of their nomadic lifestyle. They would move to another place whenever the banana leaves (tong) covering the roofs of their shelters turned yellow (lueang).
It was also said that they could move as quickly as if they were spirits (phi). The most recent survey puts their number at 357 in settlements in both Nan and Phrae Provinces. The permanent villages they live in today provide them with houses made of cinderblock and wood, with metal roofs and electricity.
Children have started going to public schools, and their health care has improved. While still in part hunting and gathering, the Mlabri now engage in highland farming and hammock weaving, brought to them by Christian missionaries.

What to do in Nan, Thailand
The Nan and Phayao region remain largely unknown to tourist form other parts of the world. To Thais, this region is slowly growing in popularity. It’s not on one of those well know routes up north into Chiangmai and Chiangrai, but is a branch off to the east from the Lampang region. It can be reachable by car, but will take a good 10 to 12 hours drive. So, it will be wise to split the effort into 2 parts, like what I did for this trip. On the trip up, we set off in the night and stayed over at Nakon Sawan. For the trip back, we made a detour over to Khao Kho for a night. This is the first part of the trip. It was a truly awesome drive with lots of stopovers here and there.

Top up at PTT in Na Noi and head over to mountains of Si Nan National Park. Scenic part begins with ride through golden teak-wood tree tunnels then via Doi Samer Dao (18.37535, 100.82652), Pha Chu Cliff & Viewpoint (18.368467, 100.839666) and Kaeng Luang Rapids (18.314979, 100.892131) all the way to intersection with R1243 or further south-east towards Uttaradit. Road is in excellent condition, meanders through thick shady forest.
