Birds at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, Kauai, Hawaii, USA
My short afternoon photographing at KPNWR on the North Shore of Kauai. A nice, breezy afternoon after a week of muggy, overcast, voggy conditions and while the birds were not super active or in great numbers, some good action including Great Frigatebirds and Brown Boobies chasing Red-footed Boobies, a mystery bird flying low over the ocean heading toward Kauapea (Secret) Beach, White-tailed Tropicbirds flying in the usual spots, the always present (at this time of the year) Laysan Albatross, the just restored almost 100 year old Kilauea lighthouse and a Nene flying in at the lighthouse! Oh and can't forget the mushrooms!
Mahalo for your continued interest.
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1985 when land and a historic lighthouse were transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the U.S. Coast Guard. The ocean cliffs and open grassy slopes of an extinct volcano provide breeding grounds for native Hawaiian seabirds and nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. Kilauea Point offers the opportunity, now unique on the main Hawaiian Islands, to view red-footed boobies, Laysan albatrosses, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and other seabirds in their natural habitat. The National Marine Sanctuary watters surrounding the refuge are home to Hawaiian monk seals, green turtles, and, in winter, humpback whales.

Kilauea Lighthouse - Mostly Birds .... Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii
A few photos from my afternoon at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Great place to see sea birds including Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Laysan Albatrosses, Great Frigatebird, Red-footed Boobies and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. A few people shots mostly other photographers!
Nene (Hawaii State Bird) Goslings, Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii, USA
Happy New Year! Hope everyone has a great 2013.
Here's a Nene brood of four that is about 2.5 weeks old when these photos were taken on New Years eve at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. This particular afternoon it was mostly overcast with Kona winds, so bird activity was quite low with many of the birds staying either close to their nesting/roosting site and generally staying away from the point where the lighthouse is located. But that allowed me to focus more on the Nene goslings! The first image shows one of the baby birds with what looks like painters tape on the bottow of one of it's feet and can only guess that the tape came from the restoration work that was just completed on the lighthouse?
Thanks for your continued interest.

Nene Goslings and Other Birds at Kilauea Lighthouse, Kauai, Hawaii, USA
My afternoon at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Monday December 10th, 2012. A sunny, but very windy day which made it hard to shoot in my normal position on the right side of the point, but luckily bird activity was slow at best. I was lucky enough that a Nene brood of 3 very young (just days old!) goslings emerged from the Naupaka and gave the visitors a show - how can you go wrong with babies! Enjoy!

My day at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. AM at the overlook at the end of Kilauea (Lighthouse) Road and afternoon out at the point adjacent to the lighthouse. BTW, that is not me in the last image!
Kilauea Point
Recorded January 18, 2004. Kilauea Point, a narrow, lava peninsula protruding from the northern shore of Kaua`i, is located on the northernmost tip of the islands and is one of the few Hawaiian refuges open to the public. It offers breathtaking views and hikes overlooking the Pacific, and it is one of the most popular spots for visitors and residents of Hawaii alike, with an average of 300,000 visitors a year. This video captures the spectacular scenery of the area and also includes a whale that kept popping up in the water just off the coast.

Okolehau Trail, Hanalei Kauai Hawaii
Okolehau Trail is referred to as The Puffer. It gains 1250 feet in 2.5 miles. The first 2/3 of a mile the Okolehau Trail is really the remains of an old dirt road. You climb, climb, climb. The footing is generally good unless a good rain came through recently. There are 2 major plateau's on the trail. The first nice overlook
is at 2/3 miles next to the tall powerline pole. At the one mile mark look for this unusual tree that I call Woody. Keep climbing another 5 minutes and you reach the first plateau which is flat and has ti plants on it. You have sweeping views of Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier (South Pacific), the Kilauea Lighthouse, Princeville, the taro fields you left behind, and Bali Hai. The next .25 of a mile is pretty flat then at the 1.5 mile mark it turns steep again and is far more muddy but the reward is ahead.
At the END of the Okolehau Trail is another plateau and you see everything you did before plus the Hanalei River coming out of the mountain valley and a close up view of all the mountains including Wai'ale'ale. In total you see 1/5 of the entire island!
You will find the Okolehau Trail off the main road from Princeville. Go toward Kee Beach on 560 leaving Princeville. Once you get to the bottom of the hill and cross the first one lane bridge take an immediate left by the taro fields. You will go down the road about ½ a mile to a parking lot across from the start of the trail. There are usually plenty of hiking sticks leaning against the bridge.
Don't forget to stop at the Hanalei Overlook on the way back up the hill to see where you climbed.
