Hawaii Volcano Air Tour: Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes of the Big Island
Cessna Caravan CE-208 cockpit Hawaii volcano air tour view of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii. These are the two largest volcanoes on the island at nearly 14,000 feet above sea level or aprox. 32,000 feet above sea floor rivaling Everest. The entire Volume of Mauna Loa is about 100 X Everest AND is on a 10 year eruption cycle that last went off in 1984 to threaten Hilo town of 35,000!
My name is Buster and I am a Hawaii air tour, interisland charter flight, and flight instructor pilot based at the Kona International Airport PHKO/KOA in Kilua Kona, Hawaii on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Kilauea Iki Trail - Top 10 Bucket List Hikes (Volcanoes National Park, Big Island, Hawaii)
This was one the best hikes in Volcanoes National Park! It seems to be the one that everybody does. You get great views from the rim, then inside the crater, it's like nothing else! You feel like you'll be swallowed by the volcano at any point! lol... It's definately a bucket list hike!
Kīlauea Iki Trail
Kilauea Iki Trail and Crater Rim Trail is a heavily trafficked loop trail located near Pahala, Hawaii, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.
Great day hike down into and across a solid lava lake in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Klauea Iki Trail starts in the rain forest on the crater's rim. The trail descends 400 feet through the rain forest to the crater floor. Hikers will cross the still-steaming crater floor, past the gaping throat of the vent that built Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return to your starting point via the crater's rim.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on Hawaii Island (the Big Island). At its heart are the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa active volcanoes. The Crater Rim Drive passes steam vents and the Jaggar Museum, which features volcanology exhibits and a viewpoint overlooking Halema'uma'u Crater. Thick ferns mark the entrance to the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku). The Chain of Craters Road weaves over lava. Trails crisscross the park.

Kīlauea is an active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands that last erupted between 1983 and 2018. Historically, Kīlauea is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaiʻi.
Did you know: Kīlauea erupted nearly continuously from 1983 to 2018, causing considerable property damage, including the destruction of the towns of Kalapana in 1990, and Vacationland Hawaii and Kapoho in 2018.

Ep 4: Five days in Big Island, Hawaii
We visited The Island of Hawaii popularly known as The Big Island and rightly so! It takes 6 hours to drive around the island even if you don’t stop for a beautiful vista point overlooking the Pacific or a magnificent lava fields. Here is our detailed iternerary for our lovely trip to the Big Island.
Day 1: Went for snorkel @Mauna Kea Beach Be sure to read this very nice written article before:
Day 2: Hawaii Volcanos National Park. It is a huge park and it will take an entire day for you to cover.
Day 3: Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park followed by another snorkel at Kahalu’u Beach (
Day 4: Waipo valley lookout:
Akaka Falls State Park: Try to park your car outside of the designated parking area. They charge 8$ if you park within the designated parking for the falls. There are two ways of reaching the Akaka Falls, we chose the longest route which was a short 45 minutes walk to the falls and back but it was totally worth it as it went through a tropical jungle.
Kaumana Caves
Flea Market at Kaiua Kona
Sunset at Mauna Kea Visitor Center- We did not have a 4X4 vehicle and hence we did not go all the way up to the Mauna Kea Summit. Instead we went to Sunset Hill to watch the sunset.
Our stay:
Where to stay:
Kona - Surfers paradise. The sunny part of the island and also the more happening.
Hilo - Very green and non urban. It was very beautiful and gave us Kaua’i like feels when we went there. Most of the locals stay this side of the island.
Waikoloa - This is more like a small hotel township. There is Mariott, Hilton and some other condos in the village. Many shopping complexes such as Kings Shops and Queen shops are also inside. The advantage of staying here was that we had plenty of food options few feet away from us. This was 30mins north of Kona.
Things not to be missed:
Hawaii volcanoes national park : This park is another experience. Just witnessing the landscape changing right in front of your eyes is truly a different experience and it should not be missed if you visit Big Island
Restaurants we visited during our stay:
Sweet Cane Cafe:
Under The Bodhi tree -
Waimea coffee company -
Kamana Kitchen -
Swami's Dosa Grill -

Hawaiian Homes Chair Grilled On Mauna Kea Access Road (Jan. 23, 2020)
Acclamating on Mauna Kea | Hilo, Hawaii
Theres good news and bad news when it comes to living in Hawaii - yes, of course it's beautiful with great weather and people but bad news is that we can't exactly just drive to another state. To ease our urge to adventure we took a weekend getaway in March to the Big Island, Hilo side to be exact. We ate a lot of fresh mochi, saw waterfalls, volcano, and caves.

Hiking Mauna Kea on The Big Island of Hawaii | Adventure Strong
Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the state of Hawaii. It rises 13,796 feet (4,205m) on the Big Island of Hawaii.
From Mauna Kea you can see all around the island including nearby Mauna Loa. The weather is much cooler on Mauna Kea so bring something warm to wear. Never forget to bring the 10 Essentials when you hike -
In September of 2012, I hiked up Mauna Kea. I didn't quite make it all the way due to altitude sickness and lack of time. But I sure was close. Here's what I learned:

Hiking to the Summit of Mauna Kea, Big Island of Hawaii
Aloha! I'm Donnie MacGowan and I live on the Big Island of Hawaii. Today, I'd like to take you to the top of Mauna Kea. At 13, 796 feet above sea level, Mauna Kea's summit is the highest point in the State of Hawaii; since its base lies at 19000 feet below sea level, its has a base-to-summit height of 33,000 feet, making it the tallest mountain on earth. It's also one of my most favorite places on earth.
Mauna Kea began forming on the sea floor about one million years ago. Its name means White Mountain in the Hawaiian language and it is snowcapped much of the winter, and the summit is covered with permafrost 35 feet deep. During the ice ages, Mauna Kea's summit was glaciated 3 times, starting about 200000 years ago and ending only 11000 years ago. One can see the U-shaped valleys and cirques, striated bedrock, glacial tills covering the summit area and remnants of ice-damned lava flows from those times. There are even the remains of extinct rock glaciers near the summit.
Produced by Donnie MacGowan; original musical score written and performed by Donald B. MacGowan; videography by Donnie MacGowan and Frank Burgess.

Mauna Kea: summiting the world’s tallest mountain
Okay, so we all know that Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain, measuring at a staggering 8,848m (29,029ft) above sea level. However, if you measure from base to peak, it is Hawaii’s Mauna Kea that is the world’s tallest mountain!

Hawaii Big Island part 1
Hawaii Big Island part 1
In late January, I flew to Hawaii to embark on a week long holiday with my closest friends from university. A lot of us flew in from Philippines, California, Texas and New Zealand. Hawaii is such a wonderful place to visit. A week was short but we packed it with a lot of hiking, beaching and trying out the local culture. In this video, you'll see our adventures from Hapuna beach, Mauna Kea summit, Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea Iki Crater, and lava flow from the Kilauea volcano. Check out my previous Hawaii video where we explored the island of Oahu. Next video will be more of the Big Island where we explored beautiful secluded beaches. Oh and btw, all these were filmed on an iPhone 6. :)
