Kilfenora Cathedral, Co. Clare, Ireland
Built on top of the site of St Fachnan's 6th century monastery that was built in 1058, the roofed part of the cathedral is used for occasional Church of Ireland services. Its exceptional acoustics have also made it an excellent venue for periodic concerts.
A new steel and glass roof was erected in 2004 to protect some of the cathedral's chancel and fine stone carvings.
Various of the famous 'seven crosses' can be seen in and around the cathedral and its graveyard, notably the Doorty Cross. Particularly significant among the graves is that of Kitty Linnane, where each St. Patrick's Day local musicians gather to play tunes in tribute to the Kilfenora Céilí Band's famous band leader.
By local tradition, the Pope is regarded as the bishop of Kilfenora in perpetuity. This reflects a degree of disagreement with the decision some centuries ago to merge the Kilfenora diocese -- at 13 parishes the smallest in Ireland -- with another bishopric (currently Galway & Kilmacduagh).

From Wikipedia: Kilfenora Cathedral is a former Roman Catholic cathedral, part of which is now used as a place of worship by the Church of Ireland. It is located in the village of Kilfenora, in the region known as the Burren, County Clare, Ireland. In medieval times it was the episcopal see of the Bishop of Kilfenora. According to tradition, the ecclesial presence at Kilfenora began with Saint Fachanan, who founded a church here in the 6th century. The first building was probably made of wood and followed by a stone construction. That church was burned down in 1055 by Murchad O'Brien. It was rebuilt between 1056 and 1058, only to be plundered in 1079 and then destroyed by an accidental fire in 1100. Kilfenora Cathedral is dedicated to St. Fachtna (also St. Fachanan or St. Fachtnan) and the present structure dates to between 1189 and 1200. It was built in the so-called transitional style with a nave and a chancel. These were later separated and by 1839, thirty-six feet of the east end were roofless.
High Crosses: Although tradition maintains that there were once seven crosses, only the remains of five of them were extant in modern times (plus one from post-reformation times). Three of those, including the one known as the Doorty Cross, were located within the graveyard of the cathedral. The Doorty Cross is so named, because its shaft was used as the tomb stone of the Doorty family grave until the 1950s when the two parts of this mid-12th century cross were reunited. A shaft of a 13th- or 14th-century cross stood near the doorway of the cathedral (the South Cross). Near the graveyard gate was a simple cross (possibly dating from the 14th or 15th century). The third cross is located within the chancel. West of the graveyard and roughly halfway between the cathedral and the modern Catholic church is the fourth high cross (the High Cross), standing in a field. The fifth cross (Cross on the Hill) was removed in 1821, by Dr. Richard Mant, Bishop of Kilfenora and Killaloe, to Killaloe, County Clare where it is still on display at St. Flannan's Cathedral and known as the Kilfenora High Cross.

On y retrouve encore plusieurs tombes qui datent du XVIIe siècle.
Plusieurs hautes croix sont disposées dans la cathédrale. La plus ancienne, la Doorty Cross, a été reconstituée et placée dans le choeur de la cathédrale. Elle daterait de 1152.
Sur un côté de cette croix, on y retrouve la figure du Christ au-dessus de quelqu'un qui chevauche un âne. De l'autre côté, on y voit Saint-Pierre qui donne sa bénédiction à un évêque et un abbé.

The Burren Centre Kilfenora
The Burren Centre in Kilfenora was the first Interpretive centre in Ireland. It is at the gateway to the Burren and is a tourist information point also. All the staff are very helpful and can direct you to some hidden places. There is a major exhibit of the Burrens Flora, Fauna and History which the visitor can tour. In the café the toasted salmon Sandwiches are a particular favourite of visitors. So a visit to Co. Clare's and Ireland's first interpretive centre is a must.

Deep among the rolling hills of County Clare lies the sleepy village of Kilfenora. Within in the village lies an abbey dedicated to St. Fachnan who founded an abbey here in the 6th century. Kilfenora is renowned for it's high crosses. Tradition holds that there were 7 but not all have survived.
