A Dover Man Narrowly Escapes A Vehicle Fire

DOVER, Del. - A Dover man narrowly escaped his vehicle after it caught fire Thursday.

It happened at around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Webbs Lane and Governors Avenue.

Leon Lewis told WBOC that he was driving his Dodge pickup from Killens Pond Park on his way back home to Dover when he began smelling gasoline.

I'm smelling gas and I think maybe there's gas in the area, but I smelled gas all the way, Lewis said. When I got here, smoke just started coming from the glove box. I put it in park and all of a sudden it engulfed me in smoke, suddenly. I just jumped out as fast as I could.

Lewis said he does not know why or how the fire started. He said he is thankful to the neighbors in the area who dialed for help.

No sooner than I got out of the car I was hearing sirens. That was very quick, Lewis said.

Hart to Heart Ambulance Service were the first on the scene. According to Aaron Warren, a firefighter with Bowers Volunteer Fire Company, he and his partner, Candy Perr, a firefighter with Little Creek Volunteer Fire Department, were driving in the area when they saw smoke coming from the vehicle.

Warren says he got out with his extinguisher to walk towards the vehicle to see if anyone was still inside.

The Camden-Wyoming Fire Department were also on the scene to help put out the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one else was inside the vehicle. No one in the area was injured.

In the meantime, Lewis said he will have to share a vehicle with his wife until he can find another mode of transportation.
