Prilep 4K - Marko Kraljevic fortress
Markovi Kuli – The Fortress (Towers) of King Marko: Marko’s towers, are included among the five strongest and most unconquerable fortresses in the Balkans. Markovi kuli site is situated to the northwest of Prilep, just above the village of Varoš. The towers of Serbian medieval Prince Marko Mrnjavčević are located on a 120-180 m high hill, surrounded by steep slopes covered with minute granite stones. The upper part of the former settlement can be reached from its north and south side. The rampart on this terrain dates from the 13th and 14th centuries and is in good condition. The walls are about one meter thick and were built of limestone mortar and rest upon the large limestone rocks. According to some historical findings, until the second part of the 14th century and even later, this fortress was defended by only 40 soldiers.Markovi kuli in Prilep were named after the last king Marko, but the studies say that it was actually a much older fortress, originating from the 4th century and the 3rd century BC. Archaeological excavations revealed the traces of several epochs – from the necropolis of the early iron period, to remains of the ancient population and of the late middle ages. The fortress consists of four defensive areas. Today, it present a symbol of Prilep.

Prilep - Macedonia's unknown gem with water park and Marko's towers
Our first encounter in Prilep was with the host of our guest house Hristijan.
This intelligent man quickly laid out all the possible attractions in Prilep and proved to be inspiring in conversation about life in the Balkans and in general.
Upon his advice we went to visit Marko's towers. In the oddly shaped mountains overlooking Prilep are the remnants of a 13th century fortress built under the rule of king Marko. Even though he was the last to rule Macedonia before the 500 year rule of the Ottoman empire, much of the fortress and towers are still standing strong.
The walk up the mountain towards the fortress is very scenic with unobstructed 360° views of the surroundings. On top you can see the entire town of Prilep and krusevo.
After this hike we cool down in Salida aquapark, Prilep's swimming pool that has 5 water slides. The pool is more of a swimming pool than an aquapark, but for the admission price of less than 2€, who can complain?
The next day we visited the city market. After some shopping for fruit and vegetables we were still short of some Rakia.
Informing about the availability of Rakia, we quickly found us befriending Milan. A friendly market vendor that sold both the clear and golden Rakia.

I need to be Macedonian: the Identity Crisis among the Slavs of FYROM
The Slavs of FYROM want to be called Macedonians. This would be like calling the Turks 'Ethnic Thracians'.
During the Ottoman times, the name Macedonia did not exist, but its territory was divided into two vilayet: Monastir and Selanik. Most of FYROM was in the Vilayet of Kosovo. Prior to that, it was called 'Kingdom of Prilep', ruled by a Serbian king Marko. He followed after Serbian King Stefan Dushan's empire collapsed. Prior to that, the name and territory of Macedonia were in Greek-speaking Byzantium and the territory of FYROM was actually in the theme of Bulgaria.
What is the reason behind their zeal? Can they understand Macedonian names? Can they read Macedonian coins? Did the Macedonians spread the Greek or Slavonic language? Did the Macedonians contribute to Greek or Slavic civilization?

Royal grave site of the lost ancient kingdom of Pelagonia found in the Republic of Macedonia - Откриена изгубената престолнина Пелагонија

Latest discoveries by archaeologists have shown a massive royal grave site in a village known as Bonce in Macedonia, one of a kind in the Balkans, which has led them to suggest that the locality may be the long lost kingdom of Pelagonia.
The grave site was discovered by a team led by Professor Viktor Lilcic.
According to the way this was built, the brilliance behind it, and just from the sheer size of the grave site, we believe the king of Pelagonia had been buried here, said Dr. Antonio Jakimovski, coordinator of the Archeological Research.
The grave site is from the 4th century B.C. when the kingdom of the Pelagonians was around. It was suggested the site had been robbed even in Antic times.
This is one of the rarest gravesites not just in the Balkans, but globally that goes back to the 4th century BC, said Jakimovski.
The site is located right underneath the hill of Visoka where it is suggested to be the site of the city of Pelagonia.
Unfortunately, the Government did not allocate funds this year for the Visoka location.
Archeologists have been searching for the city of Pelagonia and the Pelagonian kingdom for more than 150 years.
This find will undoubtedly make funds available for Visoka in 2009.
Just two years ago, near the hill of Visoka were discovered three Macedonian Shields of King Demetrij with the Vergina Sun embedded on them. The shields are currently undergoing restorations.
When completed, the world will see for the first time how did the shields of the Macedonian phalanx look like.

Грчките археолози не сакаат да соработуваат со македонските колеги на споредувањето на артефактите од гробниците на античките македонски кралеви од Пела и оние, слични на нив, откриени неодамна на локалитетот Бонче во Пелагонија, под планината Селечка. Сличностите меѓу гробниците на двата локалитети упатуваат на идејата дека веројатно во Пелагонија се наоѓа загубената античка македонска престолнина - градот Пелагонија - по кој се трага повеќе од 150 години.

Macedonia statue ignites tensions with Greece
Macedonia has inflamed long-standing tensions with its neighbour Greece by unveiling a $13m statue named 'Warrior on a Horse' in the country's capital.
The statue closely resembles Alexander the Great, the former king of Macedon who is claimed by both countries as their own.
