King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was the most famous monarch of the Kingdom of Sukhothai and ruled from 1279-1298. He is regarded as a valiant warrior. At age 19, Prince Khamhaeng participated in his father's successful invasion of the city of Sukhothai, formerly a vassal of the Khmer, establishing the independent Sukhothai Kingdom.
He is also considered a wise statesman, a scholar, diplomat and benevolent monarch to his people. Under his reign Sukhothai was both prosperous and well governed.
He is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet in 1283, which has little altered to this day.
He also established Theravada Buddhism as the state religion of the country.
Hence, King Ramkhamhaeng, is highly esteemed by the Thai people, and his bronze statue in the centre of the Historical Park in Sukhothai attracts many Thai people, daily, to pay their respects.

Just a short way up from the east gate of old Sukhothai is Wat Traphang Thong, the temple of the golden pond.
This Buddhist temple is the only one of the ancient temples within the old city walls that is still in active use, today. Originally built during the reign of King Lithai of Sukhothai, the main remaining structure is a laterite Singhalese-style round-shaped chedi.
In front of the chedi s a small pavilion housing the Lord Buddha footprint on a large stone slab. The Footprint dates from 1359 and was originally at the temple of Phra Bat Yai situtaed on a hill outside of town. It was moved to Wat Traphang Thong in the mid-twentieth century.....

The Kingdom of Sukhothai flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries and extended across the Moei, Lower Yom, Ping, Nan and Upper Pa Sak River Valleys. Sukhothai, Thailand's ancient capital city and the region's second most-important town Si Satchanalai are situated about an hour's drive apart from each other. For over two hundred years these ancient cities were the economic and cultural centers of the country and so they are now rich in historical remains. The site was designated as a World Heritage site in 1991.
The Sukhothai period is renowned for its stylization of the Buddha's features, which are portrayed as slightly feminine with a fuller, rounder face and a flame situated above the head. The fullness of the face was probably introduced to reflect the prosperity of the Kingdom at that time. There are many awe-inspiring Buddha images hidden throughout every corner of the park.
Along with the ruins of the ancient royal palaces there is a monument to King Ramkhamhaeng, who reigned during the pinnacle of the Sukhothai period. King Ramkhamhaeng is known as the father of the Siamese language (Thai), and the monument's stone inscriptions detail the development of the Thai alphabet.

Found in the 13th century, Sukhothai (literally means Dawn of Happiness) was the first truly independent Thai Kingdom, which enjoyed a golden age under King Ramkhamhaeng, credited with creating the Thai alphabet. The superb temples and monuments of this great city have been lovingly restored in Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for all travellers.

King Ram Khamhaeng was the third king of the Phra Ruang dynasty, ruling the Sukhothai Kingdom from 1279–1298, during its most prosperous era.He is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet and the firm establishment of Theravada Buddhism as the state religion of the kingdom.Recent scholarship has cast doubt on his role, however, noting that much of the information relating to his rule may have been fabricated in the 19th century in order to legitimize the Siamese state in the face of colonial threats.
