Buffalo is a city on the shores of Lake Erie in upstate New York. Its fine neoclassical, beaux arts and art deco architecture speaks to its history as an industrial capital in the early 20th century. Its landmarks include the 398-ft art deco City Hall, the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Darwin D. Martin House and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a Greek Revival museum with works by Picasso and Warhol.
The second-largest city in New York State, Buffalo is full of surprises. The city is undergoing a dramatic transformation as its proud history and incredible architectural legacy weave their way into every aspect of a renewed civic life. Surmounting the effects of deindustrialization, Buffalo is building a new identity as a city of great nightlife, cultural attractions and indigenous cuisine, as well as tight-knit neighborhoods with community spirit and a real sense of place. A palpable enthusiasm winds its way through the city's streets and neighborhoods, as locals who have summoned the collective will to revitalize their city are finally seeing their efforts pay off after decades of work.
More and more, Buffalo's exquisite and well-preserved architecture has grabbed the attention of locals and tourists alike. Most recently, Buffalo's architecture took center stage when the 2011 National Preservation Conference was held in the city to unanimous acclaim. Buildings from almost every decade of Buffalo's existence are still preserved, with more being restored each year. As of December 2011, there are seven historic neighborhoods in Buffalo listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as six additional ones that have been granted landmark status by the Buffalo Preservation Board. Of those historic districts, there are three main ones of interest to architecture buffs:
The Allentown Historic District was the first Buffalo neighborhood to be listed on the National Register. Located north of downtown, Allentown was settled in the middle and late 19th century and is characterized by small but lovely red brick houses in styles that were popular at that time, such as the Italianate and French Second Empire. Among Allentown's most architecturally exquisite buildings are the Allendale Theatre and the seven houses that make up the Tiffts Row, both of which are located on Allen Street; the William Dorsheimer House on Delaware Avenue, and the former Buffalo Catholic Institute building on Main and Virginia Streets that is now home to the Church of Scientology.
The Delaware Avenue Historic District consists of the stretch of Delaware Avenue called Millionaire's Row. The National Register of Historic Places defines the Delaware Avenue Historic District as being located between North and Bryant Streets. Parkside is the neighborhood that consists of the streets in North Buffalo immediately north and east of Delaware Park.

Buffalo Gamelan Club presents Shadow Puppets of Java, Gathutkaca's Coronation
Join us for Buffalo NY's first ever wayang kulit shadow puppet performance, Gathutkaca's Coronation at Kleinhans. Puppet master Darsono Hadiraharjo performs this classic story from the ancient Indian epic Mahabarata using over 100 characters. Supported by amazing guest artists and gamelan percussion music
Wayang Kulit performances are traditional and wildly popular multi-genre performances still practiced today on Java. They combine, virtuosic shadow puppetry, enrapturing gamelan music, comedy, philosophy, and civic engagement. Performances in Java are normally 8 hours, we are producing a 4 hour show for Buffalo at Kleinhans, which will be incredibly fun. Leave your traditional idea of what a theater or musical performance experience is and get lost in the magic of wayang kulit. With accompaniment from Heri Purwanto (wayang drums), Heni Sativri (vocalist), and Buffalo's own gamelan performance troupe Sari Raras Irama, and aerialist dancers from The Birds Nest.

Darsono Hadiraharjo - dhalang puppet master - comes from a prominent family of music and theater traditions in Central Java, Indonesia.He grew up in a small village outside of the court city of Surakarta, long known as one of the major hubs for performing arts in Indonesia. Darsono studied karawitan, a genre of music played with a gamelan from Central Java. He also learned the revered art of shadow puppetry from his father and other relatives. He continued his study at Institute Seni Indonesia, a national conservatory of the arts in Indonesia. Today, he is one of the most prominent musicians inside and outside of the city of Surakarta. At the royal court of Mangkunegaran, Surakarta, he serves as the main drummer for dances performed at the court. In the surrounding villages, he is regularly featured as an accompanying musician at shadow puppet theatre performances. At his alma mater, he teaches and inspires many young generations of musicians who are mesmerized by his improvisational practices on several instruments of the gamelan.
Hèni Savitri - sindhen vocalist - is a leading young Javanese singer and a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Central Java. She began to study sindhènan (Javanese singing with gamelan) in 2002. in 2003 she won the competition for best singer in her native district of Wonogiri, Central Java. She now performs as a member of Gamelan Sari Raras, U.C. Berkeley.
Heri Purwanto - kendhang wayang drum - is a freelance musician in great demand as a performer and teacher in Java and the United States. Heri graduated top of his class at the prestigious Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (Indonesian Advanced School for the Arts) in Surakarta, he has taught at UC Berkeley, the University of Washington, Earlham University, Chcago, and in Buffalo.
Matt Dunning - Music Director - Matt the founder and director of Buffalo Gamelan Club Sari Raras Irama. Fortunate to live in Indonesia for two years and study with some of the best gamelan musicians on Java, Matt was able to develop a deep understanding of Javanese performance and cultural practices. Matt is a Buffalo native and Fredonia graduate who is a recipient of the Darmasiswa Indonesian Arts Fellowship. Matt leads the Sari Raras Irama performance group and serves as executive director of Buffalo Gamelan Club which teaches a variety of beginner and advance music classes and facilitates the promotion of Indonesian music and culture in Buffalo. Apart from music, Matt is a documentary filmmaker, and visual artist.
Buffalo Gamelan Club - Sari Raras Irama was founded in 2016 with the vision of creating an independent, accessible, and vibrant Indonesian arts scene in Buffalo. BGC is rooted in the traditional arts of Java, and often invites guest artists and teachers to Buffalo for in depth workshops.
The Bird’s Nest is a community space dedicated to creative play, movement, and connection. Located just outside of the growing Larkinville District of Buffalo, this facility is the first in our region to offer classes in Circus Arts that are accessible for everyone regardless of body type, age, income, or ability.

On Friday, September 29, D'Youville's Inauguration ceremony took place at Kleinhans Music Hall, welcoming President Lorrie Clemo.
Buffalo Gamelan Club at Ciminelli Recital Hall for Southeast Asia Week at Buffalo State College
Buffalo Gamelan Club welcomes back Darsono Hadiraharjo and Heri Purwanto for an excellent evening of music and puppetry as part of Buffalo States Asia Week programming series in this FREE concert.
Sari Raras Irama will be Joined by Darsono, and Heri, as well as Maho Ishiguro, gamelan director at Yale, as well as Chris Miller, Director of the gamelan at Cornell University. making for a full group of musicians able to perform an array of music.
SRI will start the show with gendhing Widasari, a classic piece in the klenengan style. SRI will be exploring all of the pieces exciting possibilities including it's elusive 4th level of density: irama rangkep. the rangkep section of the piece is it's most dense possibility, with the elaborating instruments playing at their highest skill level and fastest speeds. This is the first time that SRI will perform a piece in irama rangkep at a concert in Buffalo.
After Widasari SRI will change ourse and perform a 1 hourish wayang kulit shadow puppet performance. titled Gatotkaca and the battle for the kingdom of heaven. This is the first wayang ever performed in Buffalo and will showcase al the different elements of the show. later in the year on June 6th. BGC-SRI will perform a 4 hour wayang performance at Kleinhans. You will get your first taste of wayang here at Buff State.

The Latin American Student Association is a student-run organization at the University of Buffalo focused on the promotion, education, and appreciation of Latin American culture on campus. One major component of this club is their dance team, Alma Nanichi. In Spanish, alma means 'soul', and nanichi comes from a Taino word meaning 'heart'. This team dances with their hearts and souls to represent the many rythyms and styles of Latin American dance.
Tonight, Alma Nanichi is proud to bring to the stage not only beautiful dancing, but also a story very personal to its members. With the help of dance styles like Mapale (from the coasts of Colombia), Merengue and Bachata (from the shores of the Dominican Republic), Salsa (from the tropics of Cuba), and Reggaeton (from the heat of Panama and the streets of New York City), Alma Nanichi will tell the story of the Hispanic immigrant in the United States today.
First, you will see a representation of some of the exciting indigenous beats of Latin America, but soon we will embark on a journey to America--the Land of Opportunity! The excitement and optimism for a new life and new chances soon hits the reality of the obstacles faced by Hispanics and many other immigrants today. The struggles against poverty, poor education, crime, language barriers, injustice, prejudice, and unemployment are very real and very often impossible to overcome. However, our story ends not with defeat, but with hope. Many of our dancers and their families have faced these obstacles, and have overcome them. This is a story about finding your voice, sharing your story, and taking pride in your new identity as an immigrant in the United States.

Buffalo is the second largest city in the U.S. state of New York. As of July 2016, the population was 256,902. The city is the county seat of Erie County, and a major gateway for commerce and travel across the Canada–United States border, forming part of the bi-national Buffalo Niagara Region.
The Buffalo area was inhabited before the 17th century by the Native American Iroquois tribe and later by French settlers. The city grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of immigration, the construction of the Erie Canal and rail transportation, and its close proximity to Lake Erie. This growth provided an abundance of fresh water and an ample trade route to the Midwestern United States while grooming its economy for the grain, steel and automobile industries that dominated the city's economy in the 20th century. Since the city's economy relied heavily on manufacturing, deindustrialization in the latter half of the 20th century led to a steady decline in population. While some manufacturing activity remains, Buffalo's economy has transitioned to service industries with a greater emphasis on healthcare, research and higher education, which emerged following the Great Recession.
Buffalo is on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, at the head of the Niagara River, 16 miles south of Niagara Falls. Its early embrace of electric power led to the nickname The City of Light. The city is also famous for its urban planning and layout by Joseph Ellicott, an extensive system of parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, as well as significant architectural works. Its culture blends Northeastern and Midwestern traditions, with annual festivals including Taste of Buffalo and Allentown Art Festival, two professional sports teams (Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres), and a music and arts scene.

Another time lapse of the second installment of Slow roll Buffalo - an all ages, community focused bike ride through Buffalo, inspired by the hugely successful Slow Roll out of Detroit. On September 5, 2014, 400+ cyclists met up at Resurgence Brewing (1250 Niagara) and rode 9 miles through Buffalo; taking in such destinations as Symphony Circle + Kleinhan's Music Hall, Buffalo City Hall, Canalside, The Erie Basin Marina, Lasalle Park and more. With the pace and organization of the ride allowing for all ages and walks of life, the goal is to attract new riders for each and every ride. From experienced cyclists to daily commuters to casual weekenders; Slow Roll is about unity, respect and seeing our city via two wheels, block by block.
We'd like remind everyone to stay to the right.
