Living History on Kline Creek Farm
With animals, a classic windmill, and a 19th-century farmstead, Kline Creek Farm whisks you to the past and lets you see what life was like in DuPage County over 100 years ago.
An obvious difference is technology, like cooking on a wood-burning stove instead of gas or electric.
“Instead of adjusting burners for low or high heat, you have high, medium, and low, based on how close you are to the fire box,” said Sue Benjamin, a volunteer tour guide at Kline Creek Farm.
Even though it was built in 1889, the Kline Creek farmhouse has all the rooms you’d expect from an American home – the kitchen, dining room, living room, and multiple bedrooms.
It even has a great parlor with entertainment in the form of a wax cylinder phonograph.
Entertainment the Kline family who built the house would have enjoyed more of during the winter rather than the summer.
“During the winter time, there weren’t as many chores to do so you had a lot more time for social activities,” explained Benjamin. “You would invite friends and family over, so winter was actually more fun than when you were out working on the farm, having to bring in the harvest and do planting in the spring.”
And the farmhouse is actually younger than the farm itself, which was settled in the early 1800s by the Kline family and owned by their descendants until 1969, when the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County purchased it.
Since then, a team of volunteers and a handful of staff have been keeping history alive on the farm.
Naperville News 17’s Blane Erwin reports.

Volunteers Make a Reel Difference
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County recently honored its corps of dedicated volunteers at its 2011 volunteer awards banquet. With hundreds of volunteers and guests in attendance, 19 individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions.
Last fiscal year, 956 long-term and 4,000 one-time volunteers donated a combined total of over 96,000 hours to promote the Forest Preserve District's mission of conservation, education and recreation. Volunteers at Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton, Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook, Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago, Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville and Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn hosted millions of visitors, brought history to life, cared for animals and taught children about all things wild. Natural Resource Management volunteers stewarded thousands of acres and monitored animal populations. Trail Patrol volunteers helped visitors enjoy the forest preserves safely. Through the Volunteer Ranger Experience, individuals supported fishing and archery clinics and groups helped maintain the beautiful condition of forest preserves throughout the District.

Forest Preserve of DuPage County Petition
Since 2002, the Forest Preserve and DuPage County have remained separate entities, each with their own commission. But earlier this year, Elmhurst State Representative Deb Conroy filed House Bill 3099 to consolidate the two, in an effort to save taxpayers money, saying:
“I introduced legislation over these last two years to address this issue, and it is clear that we still have a lot of work to do to ensure that tax dollars are spent responsibly while maintaining the core purpose of the forest preserve.”
The Forest Preserve Board feels there is a conflict of interest between the economic gain development of land can have at the county level, versus the interests of preservation and conservation held by the forest preserve, and would prefer things remain as is.
“They would vote as they did to put landfills on forest preserve property, they would run roads through forest preserve property, we would have more commercial interest trying to usurp the open space that people have voted time and time again to keep open,” said Mary Lou Wehrli, a Commissioner, for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
The group has launched a petition to ensure that the agencies remain independent. As of this taping, over two thousand people have signed.
The bill is currently awaiting a vote in the house.

SUMMARY
=======
A timeline of United States inventions (before 1890) encompasses the ingenuity and innovative advancements of the United States within a historical context, dating from the Colonial Period to the Gilded Age, which have been achieved by inventors who are either native-born or naturalized citizens of the United States. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law proclaiming that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Pittsford, Vermont became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent for an improved method of Making Pot and Pearl Ashes. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. However, the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994 (URAA) changed the patent term in the United States to a total of 20 years, effective for patent applications filed on or after June 8, 1995, thus bringing United States patent law further into conformity with international patent law. The modern-day provisions of the law applied to inventions are laid out in Title 35 of the United States Code (Ch. 950, sec. 1, 66 Stat. 792).
From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below.
