Yorkshire Sea Cadets in Kohima Tribute
15 Sea Cadets from across the region were specially selected to form an Honour Guard for the Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, His Royal Highness The Duke of York, during a special Word War Two commemoration in York today.
The cadets, aged between 14 and 17, lined the steps of York Minster as part of the annual Kohima Commemoration, which marks a decisive battle in World War Two over the Japanese. They formed part of a line of honour for their Admiral, who welcomed their role in the ceremony, and formed an Honour Guard for the veterans of the Kohima Battle at the Chapter House and the Kohima Memorial. It was the first time in the Sea Cadets history that they been known to form a part of the Kohima Commemoration Service.
Ella Duke, 14, from Acomb, who attends York High School, said: I've never even been close to someone from the Royal family before let alone spoken to one -- it was amazing! It was such an honour to take part in the Service and to represent the Sea Cadet Corps in this important ceremony. The veterans were also very welcoming and it's incredible to think what they faced all those years ago.
Five sea cadet units took part in the Service, including TS York, TS Iron Duke, TS Unseen, TS Scarborough and TS Cleopatra.
The service commemorated the Battle of Kohima in North East India which was fought from 4 April to 22 June 1944. Nearly 4,000 British and Indian soldiers lost their lives when Allied Forces halted the advance of the Japanese army in Asia. This battle was ultimately to prove to be the turning point of the Burma Campaign.

Imphal World War II Memorial cemetery
The Imphal War Cemetery is located in Imphal, the capital of the Indian state of Manipur, in Northeast India, which has an international border with upper Burma (now Myanmar). The cemetery has 1,600 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Earl Louis Mountbatten described the battle fought at Imphal and Kohima as probably one of the greatest battles in history. In 2013, the Battle of Kohima and Imphal was voted as one of the greatest battles in history, based on a national survey conducted by the National Army Museum.
The cemetery is located in Imphal, in the Deulahland district 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away from the Imphal International Airport. It is approachable from the Imphal-Dimapur Highway 39, through a branch road which is about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the right of the high way and in front of the DM college. Daily air services operate from Calcutta, Guwahati and Silchar. The road distance from Imphal to Kohima is 135 kilometres (84 mi) to its north and to Silchar is 160 kilometres (99 mi) to its west. Regular buses operate between Guwahati in Assam to Imphal. There is no rail network in Manipur.
The Imphal War Cemetery contains some 1,600 graves of Commonwealth soldiers, including Indians, Britons, Australians, Canadians, and East Africans.
One of the key yet forgotten battles of the Second World War was the Battle of Imphal, a struggle between Japanese forces and the British in India. The fascinating aspect of this battle was it’s timing- in 1944, when the rest of the country was trying to shrug colonial domination, Indian soldiers were waging a battle on behalf of the British.
