Bright Angel Lodge and surrounding rustic cabins sit on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Opened in 1935 and designed by architect Mary Jane Colter, one of only a few female American architects.
The El Tovar Hotel opened in 1905. It was the first hotel at the Grand Canyon at a rate of $4.50 a night which would get you a room with running water. El Tovar named after Don Pedro de Tovar a Spanish explorer in 1540. Its was built by the Santa Fe Railway and Fred Harvey Co during a time when railways would build hotels at scenic destinations. This hotel was built before the Grand Canyon was a federally recognized park which happened in 1919.
Exhibits at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.
The Canyon World is the story of the creation of the Grand Canyon.
The Birdseye Expedition exhibits one of four wooden boats used in the USGS Mapping the Grand Canyon 1923. These expeditions were carried out 1921-1923. The boats had to be sturdy enough to survive the rapids. The crew of 12 men was led by topographic engineer Claude Birdseye.
Grand Canyon survey party at Lees Ferry . This group set off in August 1 1923 and landed at Needles California on October 13.
From the USGS website Mapping the Grand Canyon in 1923. The Birdseye Expedition
“The Grand Canyon survey party at Lees Ferry. Left to right: Leigh Lint, boatman; H.E. Blake, boatman; Frank Word, cook; C.H. Birdseye, expedition leader; R.C. Moore, geologist; R.W. Burchard, topographer; E.C. LaRue, hydraulic engineer; Lewis Freeman, boatman, and Emery Kolb, head boatman. Boatman Leigh Lint, a beefy athlete who could tear the rowlocks off a boat...absolutely fearless, later went to college and became an engineer for the USGS.”
Geologists contributing to the knowledge of the Grand Canyon.
Hermits Rest Built in 1914 designed by Mary Colter Built for the tourists arriving by the coach operated by the Fred Harvey Co. Colter also built other structures as part of the National Register of Historic Places including Hermits Rest 1914, Desert View Watchtower 1932, Lookout Studio 1914 and Hopi House 1905.
Hopi House was architect Mary Colter’s first building. Local Hopi craftsmen helped build the structure. It was used to house American Indian artisans who lived and worked there.
“If you're planning your visit several months from now, that's good; advance reservations at Grand Canyon hotels, sometimes over a year out, are usually needed for in-park Grand Canyon National Park lodging at the South Rim and North Rims. Time of year counts, too; the South and West Rims are open year-round and are busiest in spring and summer, but if you're planning on visiting between mid-October and mid-May, you'll want to note that the Grand Canyon North Rim is closed during this time.
The South Rim is the most popular part of Grand Canyon National Park, so look for South Rim hotels and motels in nearby Tusayan or Williams, just 50 miles from the park. If Grand Canyon National Park is just one adventure on your Arizona vacation itinerary, consider a more central jumping off point and book one of the hotels, resorts, budget-friendly motels in Flagstaff (90 minutes from GCNP) or Sedona (a destination it its own right, just 2 hours from the National Park.) You could even stay in Scottsdale/Phoenix, but only if you're up for an 18-hour day of self-driving, or better yet, a more relaxed full-day guided van tour to the Grand Canyon.
For those wanting to visit the newer West Rim, home of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, you can book an all inclusive package and stay near the rim, but lodging there is limited to just the Grand Canyon Lodge and Cabins on the Hualapai reservation. Grand Canyon North Rim is popular among avid outdoor enthusiasts because of the remoteness of the area. It has a short May-to-October season and frankly, most North Rim folks prefer sleeping under the stars in a campsite versus staying overnight in a hotel. But a stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim is an opportunity you should seize if you are able and are planning a year or so out. If you're late to the party, or you're also planning on visiting other national parks in the Grand Circle - namely Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks in southern Utah - browse our directory of Page/Lake Powell hotels, motels and resorts.
One or two nights on any rim of the Grand Canyon are plenty for most visitors; if you plan to stay longer, venture outward for your lodging. Stay in Flagstaff, Sedona, or even Scottsdale/Phoenix for a South Rim visit, and choose Las Vegas for your vacation hub for a West Rim and Grand Canyon Skywalk tour.”

Arizona Unemployment & Law School Grads & Kolb Studio
Arizona's jobless rate went up in all 11 sectors last month, at a time when the national rate remained stable. Law schools are pumping out more graduates than can find good jobs and who are loaded down with student-loan debt. The Grand Canyon Association is launching a fundraising campaign to renovate Kolb Studio, a 109-year-old building perched on the edge of the south rim of Grand Canyon.

Snow at the Grand Canyon Village May 20 2019
Exploring the Snowfall at the Grand Canyon Village on May 20, 2019. Enjoy a tour of historic Grand Canyon Village and be awestruck by the magnificent views of the Grand Canyon. Find everything you need for a Grand Canyon adventure in Grand Canyon Village. This historic village has excellent shopping for all the hiking and camping gear you need, as well as authentic American Indian crafts and plenty of canyon souvenirs. The village also has stellar lodging options and a top-rated walking tour.Grand Canyon Village, located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Northern Arizona, holds some of the best scenic overlooks in the park, including Yavapai Point. Begin your Grand Canyon tour at the visitor center. Here you can pick up a copy of the self-guided walking tour brochure for in-depth information on the canyon and its history. Highlights of the tour include Bright Angel Lodge, El Tovar Hotel Buckey O’Neill Cabin, Hopi House, Lookout Studio, and Kolb Studio. You’ll also learn how Grand Canyon Village grew up around the Santa Fe Railroad starting in 1901. Stop by the rustic Grand Canyon Railway Depot, which welcomes Grand Canyon Railway passengers to the village.
There are many activities in the area, including helicopter tours, horseback rides, a scenic train ride, and mule trips. And, of course, the hiking can’t be beat. Some of the best hikes include Bright Angel Trail, South Kaibab Trail, Rim Trail, and Hermit Trail. Backcountry permits are not required for day hikes, but – with the exception of Phantom Ranch – they are if you plan to spend the night.
For visitors who aren’t up for a hike into the canyon, a shuttle transports visitors along the rim of the canyon, stopping at many breathtaking vantage points. You can also enjoy the views directly from Grand Canyon Village, then refuel at one of the village’s restaurants: Bright Angel Lodge, El Tovar, or Maswik Lodge.
Park Services strongly recommendeds all visitors traveling north on Highway 64, especially those in RVs and larger vehicles, park in the FREE Park & Ride lots located in Tusayan (about one mile south of the Park entrance). You can purchase your Grand Canyon National Park pass at several locations in Tusayan and then take the FREE shuttle to the visitor center within the Park.
The free shuttle service in Tusayan is seasonal, and runs only from March through September.
Bright Angel Trail - Grand Canyon Hikes
Bright Angel Trail.
Hiking in the Grand Canyon.
The Bright Angel trail hike is the most heavily used hiking trails in the Grand Canyon. The 6.0-mile (9.7 km.) round trip hike to the Three-Mile Resthouse is a great day hike experience. As an alternative doing the 3.6-mile (5.8 km) round trip hike to the Mile-and-a Half Resthouse also offers great views of the canyon below and is a less strenuous day hike.
Starting from the trailhead near Hermit’s Rest Transfer shuttle bus stop, you’ll immediately begin the long, relatively steep descent to the Colorado river with breath-taking views of the colorful canyon landscape and unfolding valley below.
What we love about this Grand Canyon hike is that you’ll experience an endless array of dramatic views and awe-inspiring drop-offs.
Plan on taking 5-6 hours for the Three-Mile Resthouse day hike, especially if you plan on stopping along the way for photo shoots. Water is available seasonally at the resthouse.

Petrified Forest National Park, as it appears today is no more than a barren, lifeless badland; however, these badlands are a living scientific laboratory which revels that millions of years ago this land flourished with large river systems, forests, prehistoric plants and animals. They are two entrances to the park; The Painted Desert visitor center is at the North entrance and the Rainbow Forest Museum and gift shop is at the South entrance. In between is a 28-mile paved scenic highway full of hills and winding curves, which displays one of the world's largest petrified wood deposits. Along the highway are pullovers and short drives to areas with walking trails and overlooks which allow for one to get a close-up view. For a different look of the Painted Desert, one should drive North from Winslow on Highway 87 for fourteen miles to the Painted Desert Rim View. The difference in colors are past amazing and worth the trip.
What can we say about the Grand Canyon? We learned about the canyon in school, saw it on National Geography, watched movies that were made in and around the canyon, read books about it; however, none of these comes close to actually standing on the rim looking out over the canyon. Which part of the rim is one standing on, the canyon has miles upon miles of rim to stand upon, with each place giving a person something different to see?
The best way to see the canyon along the South entrance road is by the South rim walking trail, which runs from Hermit's Rest to South Kaibab and covers just under thirteen miles, most of this trail is paved with only slight inclines and gives excellent views of the canyon. For the person that wishes to venture into the canyon, there are four trails from which to choose. Hermit's Rest, Kolb Studio, South Kaibab, and Grandview Trail. All four are rated as extreme difficult, with the Grandview trail recommended for experienced desert hikers only.
Leaving the visitor center and traveling Desert View Drive (hwy 64) for the next 22 miles one will follow the canyon rim with pull overs for views of the canyon and four different side roads with lookout points. Between Moran Point and Lipan point, be sure to catch the Tusayan Museum and Ruins on the right side of the road.
Red Rock State Park, just South of Sedona located along the Red Rock scenic loop is a 286-acre nature preserve with stunning scenery of the red-rock formations. The five-miles of family-oriented hiking trails is a network of interconnecting loops to vistas of red rock or the lush greenery of Oak Creek, with the Eagle's Nest loop being the highest with an elevation gain of 300-feet. The parks wildlife consists of mule deer, javelina, coyotes, bobcats and many species of birds.

Bandit is a 18 month old rescue dog saved from a kill shelter in California. He was horribly matted, dirty and looked like a Terrier/Shih Tzu mix. After he was groomed it became clear he is a purebred Parti Poodle. A fairly unusual dog, a Parti Poodle has a unique coloration only possible when both parents are purebred Parti Poodles. The gene necessary to produce the coloration is recessive and both parents must have it. I would have loved him either way but am blessed to have him as he is. =8v)

Unsettling Facts And Horrors Of The Grand Canyon - Glen And Bessie Hyde || Facts Academy Video
In This Video About Unsettling Facts And Horrors Of The Grand Canyon - Glen And Bessie Hyde || Facts Academy Video. In an era that craved adventurous heroes, newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde took on the rapids of the Grand Canyon in the winter of 1928. A month into their journey, the couple’s homemade wooden boat was found floating upright and fully stocked in the cold canyon water. Days earlier, the Hydes were on the South Rim of the canyon restocking goods when 22-year-old Bessie eerily stated, “I wonder if I’ll ever wear pretty shoes again.” When word of their disappearance got out, newspapers around the country immediately began reporting about the honeymooners who were destined to set world records yet appeared to have vanished from the face of the Earth. What would become one of the biggest searches in the history of the Grand Canyon failed to turn up a single clue as to what occurred. Lots of speculation ensued, from the Hydes being butchered by Native Americans to drowning, yet in the end, their fate remains a mystery.
