A Journey from Calcutta to Kolkata
This is about the documentary feature film on the city of Joy - Calcutta which is framed on the transition of the city from where it used to be called Calcutta to when now it is called as Kolkata.
Synopsis :
This film captures the ethos of the city right through its transformation over more than three centuries and in the process dissolves the photographs of Calcutta and Kolkata. We have tried to project the city thriving upon its huge middle class from amidst whom have perpetually risen extra-ordinary icons like educationists, scientists, artists, film makers, musicians, players and social workers and Five Noble Laureates
The story is as seen through the eyes of an NRI (Ron) who left the city when he was merely 10 years old and during the interim years did not have a chance of seeing(exploring) the city. Ron comes back to visit the city after completion of his education. This is the city where he once lived when he was a child but is most often than not the topic of discussion of his parents.
His visit kicks off with a fortunate and chance meeting with an artist who takes him for a tour of some of the historic buildings and also gives him a lesson on the history of Calcutta. He visits his father's old friend (uncle) who asks him to stay at his house . He also does not want to miss the opportunity with her childhood girl friend Bonnie's childhood's memories .
The film shows some of the historic colleges, talks about religious institutions, artists, filmmakers, educationalists, scientists, musicians, etc. We bring the buzzing marketplaces like Hogg Market (now known as New Market, Barra Bazar, Bow Bazar, Bag Bazar as well the modern market like Sriram Arcade.
Throughout the film, luminaries like renowned filmmaker Gautam Ghosh, share their memories on camera on the pre-eminence of culture. A vibrant city with a distinct socio-political culture, Calcutta is noted for its revolutionary history, ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to the leftist and trade union movements.
Referred to as the Cultural Capital of India, The City of Processions, and the City of Joy, Kolkata has been home to luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray, Satyendranath Bose, Swami Vivekananda and many others and the film also focuses on them.

Calcutta or Kolkata- the story of its sustenance in the partitioning India in 1947
A two hundred and fifty-year-old city on river Hooghly stood where it always had but the circumstances of its existence were changing dramatically. A subcontinent was being split into two and from the resultant chaos, the sovereignty of new nations was unfortunate. The partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 threw up permutations that would take years of human history to adjust the threads of the economy that were patiently woven over hundreds of years snapped overnight. Supply lines were cut. Markets separated from their produce. Calcutta the erstwhile Deccan city of the British Empire stood orphaned, one of its major sources of sustenance, its hinterland had been split into two unequal halls- the city that was once the symbol of colonial might, the city that became one of the beacons of artistic Renaissance and political resistance raced itself to play a new role in the emerging reality of an independent
India.
Kolkata, Bengali Kalikata, formerly Calcutta, city, capital of West Bengal state, and former capital (1772–1911) of British India. It is one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. The city is centered on the east bank of the Hugli (Hooghly) River, once the main channel of the Ganges (Ganga) River, about 96 miles (154 km) upstream from the head of the Bay of Bengal; there the port city developed as a point of transshipment from water to land and from river to sea. A city of commerce, transport, and manufacture, Kolkata is the dominant urban center of eastern India.

Calcutta, India
We have made our way to Calcutta, the center of all that is chaotic and crazy in the world. Every second is pure insanity, my eyes can't keep up with the movement.
A wild mixture of modern and traditional, Calcutta is perhaps the greatest location in the world for people watching. At night, when the temperatures drop, Indians and tourists take to the streets.
Strolling the filthy, steamy city, one cannot help being drawn into the manic sense of euphoria when the city comes alive. Night markets, street vendors, flashing neon signs, and hand-drawn rickshaws racing with yellow Ambassador taxis. It's like performance art on the largest scale imaginable!

KOLKATA | the city of joy | calcutta | kolkata | india|কলকাতা। west bengal
Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and the second largest city in India (after Mumbai). If Bangalore is the Seattle of India, then Kolkata is the sub-contintent's London. It is an 'in your face' city that shocks and charms the unsuspecting visitor. Abject poverty mixes inexplicably with crumbling British Raj-era gems, sprawling gardens and historical colleges. Long known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata continues to spawn generations of poets, writers, film producers and Nobel Prize winners. If your trip only allows for a visit of one or two of India's metropolitan cities, than definitely consider placing Kolkata on your itinerary. Love it or hate it, you definitely won't forget the city on the Hooghly.

Calcutta Welcomes The Queen - 1961
Calcutta is a city of millions, and, long before the royal visit, masses of people were giving the police a busy time, as they crowded the streets. Meanwhile, a trip aboard a river-steamer was Her Majesty's last engagement in East Pakistan. The Queen and Prince Philip had driven out from Dacca to the Adamjee jute mills, and were returning this way. The great Steelworks at Durgapur was first on the list of engagements for the return to India. When Her Majesty came to be shown over the plant, she saw one of Britain's largest overseas contracts. It's not yet completed, but it's already in operation. British technical supervision, together with India technicians and workers co-operated in building it. From Durgapur to Calcutta, and a multitudinous welcome from the people of the city. The Queen was accompanied by Miss Naidu (Governor of West Bengal) on this memorable drive.
