KROC CENTER HAWAII - FLY OVER
Located on 15 acres of land in Kapolei, the 200,000 square-foot Kroc Center is the largest community center of its kind in Hawaii. It is a place where people young and old have opportunities to learn and grow, to build confidence and hope.
The Kroc Center includes the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Education & Resource Center with conference and banquet rooms for 720 guests; the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Early Education Center for 120 preschool students; the 500-seat Jack & Marie Lord Worship & Performing Arts Center; the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center with an NCAA-regulation gymnasium; the First Hawaiian Hale 40-bed dormitory for traveling teams and overnight conferences; a state-of-the-art Health & Wellness Center with workout equipment and facilities for individual and group fitness; an Aquatics Center featuring a competition pool and a recreation pool with giant water slides; and a 3-acre multipurpose field for outdoor programs.
Development of the Kroc Center was made possible by a $110 million combined capital and endowment grant from a bequest to The Salvation Army by the late Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc. As a condition to the significant Kroc grant, the community also raised nearly $23 million locally, bringing the project to $133 million.
Construction of Kroc Center Hawaii began on April 15, 2010 and opened February 2012.

Bipartisanship: It's in Hawaii's Best Interest
HONOLULU -- Former Hawaii Governor and current U.S. Senate candidate Linda Lingle released today a new video spot highlighting her commitment to bipartisanship.
With Congressional approval ratings at an all-time low, it is absolutely critical that our next U.S. Senator have the experience and leadership to break through the partisan gridlock and find solutions to create more jobs and stimulate the economy. Gov. Lingle's proven record and commitment to bipartisanship are essential to accomplishing this goal at home and across the nation.
Always putting Hawaii's people first, Gov. Lingle believes that the most effective means to overcoming the challenges facing our state and country are common-sense solutions. In this spot on bipartisanship, Gov. Lingle explains that her commitment to bipartisanship puts people over politics, allowing her to make a decision based on what is best for our communities.
Gov. Lingle points out her service as a founding member of the Governor's Council of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a leading national think tank. Members of the Governor's Council focus on building bipartisan support for solutions to issues facing our country.
The first step toward building solutions to spur job creation and the economy is to look at the merits of a solution as opposed to which party proposed it, according to Governor Lingle. In her words, if what is being proposed is good for Hawaii, in the long term, I am for it. If it's not in our interest, I will fight against it, no matter who proposed it.

GOVERNOR LINGLE VISITS THE NEIGHBOR ISLANDS
Former two-term Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle made big news last week when she announced her run for the open U.S. Senate seat. Her high-energy election rollout included barnstorming across the neighbor islands to visit personally with voters as well as speak to specific groups. She took the opportunity to relay her decision and the reasons behind it in person to the folks on the Kauai, Hilo and Kona on the Big Island and Maui.
Last Friday morning, Gov. Lingle day-tripped to Kauai to meet with residents of the Garden Isle. She stressed the need for bipartisan solutions to community leaders in a talk story session at JJ'S Broiler in Lihue. One of her top priorties is the need to stimulate the economy. To protect the economy, as U.S. Senator, Gov. Lingle intends to promote a law mandating a Jobs Impact Statement accompany any new federal law or rule to assess its impact on the economy.
On Saturday, the former Governor started off at the Kona Community Aquatic Center where she cheered on fellow swimmers. From there she was able to make a sweet stop at the 9th Annual Kona Chocolate Festival & Symposium at the Keauhou Beach Resort, a well-attended event that showcases Big Island delicacies and an important segment of that island's agricultural economy. She ended the day in West Hawaii by attending the Big Island Interscholatstic Federation football championships, won by Konawaena High School.
Then on Sunday it was off to the other side of the Big Island, to the UH Hilo annual Health Fair, where she talked about national health care issues and the need to protect Medicare for our kupuna. She also stopped in at the 13th Annual Taste of Hilo, an event the benefits Hawaii Community College.
On Monday, she visited her home county of Maui, meeting and talking story with seniors at the Wailuku Senior Center. On the island where she once was a two-term Mayor and five-term County Council member, the Gov. Lingle also spent time talking to the Maui Chamber of Commerce, stressing to them her bipartisan approach to leadership, and that as a U.S. Senator, she would continue to put the interests of the people of Hawaii ahead of any political party's agenda. She also spoke about the importance of tourism to Hawaii and the nation's economy, stating that she would like to raise the topic to a level of prominence in the U.S. Senate by serving as the point person for tourism. On her trip to the Valley Isle, there was also a visit with students, teachers and administrators at the Kihei Charter School, an innovative approach to public education that Gov. Lingle has long supported.

Beach reopens after shark attack
October 7, 1999
A 16-year-old Kona youth who was attacked by a shark Friday evening has been transferred to Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu where doctors were reported to be fighting to save his arm.
The boy was surfing off Old Kona Airport State Park when he was attacked by a shark 6 to 8 feet long shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday.
A hospital spokesman said the boy's parents asked that information on his condition not be released, but television reports indicated he underwent surgery Saturday for serious injuries to his right arm.
Department of Land and Natural Resources officials conducting a search for the shark Saturday at Old Kona Airport identified the teen-ager as Jessie Spencer.
According to the Fire Department incident report, the shark grabbed the teen-ager's arm, but he was able to pull away and paddle to shore with his left arm.
A surfing companion said he believed it was a tiger shark, DLNR officials reported.
The injured boy was taken to Kona Community Hospital and was transferred to Queen's late Saturday morning.
Kona police said the boy had severe lacerations on his upper right arm and a gouge in the lower part of the arm.
The Fire Department statement said the boy's arm was mangled. Hawaii County Civil Defense officials closed the shoreline Saturday from the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center to the area fronting Kona Bay Estates.
The county helicopter conducted an aerial search for the shark, and agents from the DLNR Enforcement Division and Aquatics Division searched by boat and walking the shoreline, said DLNR Enforcement Division West Hawaii supervisor Charles Nahale. However, no shark was found Saturday, and officials said the park would reopen at 7 a.m. today.
Authorities also advised tour boat operators and dive companies to keep their customers out of the water Saturday, Nahale said.
It was the fourth shark attack in Hawaii this year, including two attacks off Maui.
The last attack in Big Island waters was July 21 when a 43-year-old man said he was attacked by a shark while surfing off Honolii near Hilo.
Griffith Yamaguchi had injuries to his thigh and buttocks. Before this year, the last confirmed Big Island shark attack was in 1972, when Eric Fotherby was bitten on the forearm by an eight-foot shark while spear fishing off Waimanu Valley.
And the last confirmed West Hawaii attack was April 12, 1963 when Aiona Aka was bitten on the leg and foot while surfing at Awili in South Kona.
A 12- to 15-foot shark was seen in the area. An unconfirmed attack was reported April 15, 1987, in Kailua Bay, when Daniel Kennedy was last seen swimming out to an anchored sailboat.
His shorts, which bore the marks of shark teeth, were found at the bottom of the bay, but no other evidence could be gathered to confirm an attack.
Despite more than 100 known shark attacks in Hawaii's waters since 1900, the Big Island has yet to record a single confirmed fatality caused to a shark during this century.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I: Giving a Damn
Many Hawai‘i residents are familiar with the story behind the Micronesian migration. Seventy years ago, two nuclear bombs were dropped on Bikini Atoll, setting off 12 years of detonation in the Marshall Islands. Later, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was reported to have referred to the displacement of Micronesians this way: “There are only 90,000 of them out there. Who gives a damn?”
Today it’s estimated Micronesians represent about 2% of Hawai‘i’s population. Despite what most people think to be the truth, they are not living off the public dole. They pay taxes and struggle with health, employment, housing – and most of all, assimilation. Many are homeless and would like to return to their island home. But now there’s a new environmental tragedy that threatens the Marshall Islands. Has the migration of Micronesians only just begun? And this time, who will give a damn?

Galápagos Rift 2011: New Hydrothermal Vent Discovered
On the ninth remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dive of the Galapágos Rift 2011 expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, the science team finally discovered the type of hydrothermal vent community they had been searching for.
Clusters of tube worms, limpets, mussels, and anemones were seen to inhabit cracks in the lava bed where mineral-rich, geothermally heated water 'vents' out. Two species of tube worms were found in abundance: the giant Riftia pachyptila and also the much smaller, never observed in the Galápagos, Tevnia jerichonana.
Brachyuran crabs, vent shrimp, and scale worms clung not only to the surrounding rock but also to the tube worms themselves in some cases. Extensive fields of dead and living clams surrounded the individual pockets of venting.

Our Florida Reefs
Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative is the first established coral group along Dade, Broward and Martin Beach to provide a management plan for the protection of coral reefs. Reefs provide homes to sea life and protect our coast, and in return need a healthy gulf. Coral Reefs provided for $6.6 billion in sales for fishing, diving and boating in Florida.
