Snorkeling in the Korana River, Plitvice, Croatia
Spent some time near Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia and decided to do some snorkeling in the Korana River.
I actually swam in three different places along the river just to check out the different ecosystems and to see what other cool fish I could find.
At one point I even saw a huge water snake, visible in the video at 0:53.
I was actually surprised at how many fish there were and it ended up being quite a memorable experiencing snorkeling in the river.
It's hard to find places to swim or snorkel near Plitvice Lakes National Park but if you head down the road and follow the Korana River you're bound to find some good entry points.

This is a very nice place to take a swim, near Plitvice Lakes. North of the lakes, just west of the bridge where road 42 and 1 meet.

At the passing of the Slunjčica into the Korana river, nature has created a 500 meters wide and 200 meters long travertine barrier. This impressive layer of lime is a deposit of huge concentrations of calcium in the water, which accumulates when passing through subterranean channels and which sediments at Rastoke. he barrier as a whole consists of various small waterfalls, rapids and basins. The San Korana Guest House near Plitvice Falls in Croatia
My girlfriend and I spent 2 nights at the San Korana Guest House during our visit to Croatia and the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Ivica, the owner of the property, is a wonderful man and strives to make your visit to Plitvice the best that it can be. He used to work at the national park so he's full of information that can help make your visit so much more memorable.
As for the property, it's located just off the main highway to the area and it's a short drive to the National Park as well as some of the other cool things to do in the area. There is a small town nearby where you can grab groceries or something to eat for dinner if you don't feel like having Ivica prepare something for you.
Right from the guest house you can access hiking trails and it's even possible to go swimming in the beautiful Korana River. There are a lot of entrance points to the river and you can swim at the waterfall on the property without having to venture anywhere at all.
For the best swimming hole, I recommend crossing the small Bridge right out front of the guest house and Following the trail on the right hand side past all of the small cottages.
This will take you into a wooded and more secluded area of the river and there are plenty of quiet access points here where you can relax and swim undisturbed.
It's just a 5 minute drive to the National Park and Ivica will also give you more information on some nearby trails that you can explore for incredible views of Lakes and Waterfalls.
My girlfriend and I stayed in a room on the first floor of the building and we had a great view of the surrounding village and hills in the distance. The bathroom was a little bit outdated but the bedroom was comfortable and there was even a microwave in the room that could be used to heat something up.
The Wi-Fi didn't work that well either but Ivica is focused on providing a relaxing getaway rather than making it easy for you to spend all your time on your phone so this is somewhat of a benefit I suppose.
For the price and location I would definitely recommend staying at the San Korana Guesthouse if you're hoping to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park and you're looking for something comfortable and reasonably priced.
Don't hesitate to ask Ivica about anything you might be wondering about the parks or the surrounding area because he'll definitely be able to help you out with any of your questions or trip planning.

The short video gives an insight into the underwater world of the Korana River near Slunj in Croatia in May 2009: fish, snails, aquatic plants like Pondweed (Potamogeton sp.), Myriophyllum and Water Lily (Nuphar lutea).
In the hot summer of 2003 I could see and watch a lot of pikes of different sizes, in 2009 however only the prey of it. The water can be crystal-clear. It was not so in the spring.
Nevertheless, it's always worth visiting the Korana River near Slunj, when going to Plitvice Nationalpark or whenever driving past Karlovac and having some time left over.
