What It's Like To Serve In South Korea's Mandatory Military Service
South Korea requires all of its male citizens to serve in the military for two years. Here's what that experience is like.
Footage courtesy of Goyang TV, 2012
Following is a transcript of the video.
The hardest part was when I and my group had to go into this gas-filled room.
My name is Gene Kim, and I served in the South Korean military for 2 years.
The law requires every male to serve the military, and it is extremely hard to get out of it. If you purposely evade the military duty, you will get jail time.
The service is mandatory mainly because our relationship with North Korea. After things got intensified after the Korean War, there was a need for an active force for the South Koreans, so the military can always be ready.
I served the Korea military between the years of 2009 and 2011. Before the military, I was living in New York. I decided to go because I had to get it over with it at some point.
At the time I did my military service, I hated it.I just hated every moment being in there, trapped in that isolated society. And I just waited for my time to pass.
I haven't seen a single person who really wanted to be there, who was enthusiastic to be there. People generally want to avoid the military because, I think, of the forcefulness of it. Compared to the US, where the military is voluntary, and you can pursue it as a career, in Korea, 2 years of service is mandatory, and everyone is forced to do it.
You're living your free life and then suddenly isolated from the rest of the society. You have no contact. You can’t fill your cell-phone addiction there. And you're basically sacrificing 2 years of your youth for the nation.
So, on the first day when you enter the military. As soon as you enter this training base, you meet these instructors that train you for 5 weeks on from there. They intentionally try to intimidate you, try to scare you, in order to make you into a soldier.
This 5 weeks of training was one of the most intense experiences I had. You’re not even a private at this moment. You are a trainee. The training is very intense. You are yelled at constantly. You don't have a voice there. You can only do what you're told to do and nothing else.
You learn to move very fast. When you’re ordered something, you have to run to get it, you have to run to do it. And if you hesitate, you get picked on for that. If you get around 5 minutes of rest, then you're happy with that. You re-learn things that you thought you already knew. There's a certain way to eat. There's a certain way to stand. There’s a certain way to talk to people. There's a certain way to do everything in the military.
One of the most memorable trainings that I did was this training called 화생방 훈련. Which is to prepare soldiers to defend against a chemical attack. The hardest part was when I and my group had to go into this gas-filled room.
And you enter the room with your gas mask on, and there's also an instructor there with a gas mask on. He eventually orders you to put off the gas mask. And when you're exposed to this gas it doesn't have long-term effects on you, but anywhere that's exposed would hurt like hell. It feels like a thousand needles just pinching on to you and grabbing onto you.
And when you inhale this gas, it feels like you're suffocating. Basically, you can’t breathe. It's just chaos in that tiny room. Everyone’s grabbing onto each other. Everyone’s rolling on the floor. There was this one guy. He ran to the door trying to get out, but there was a guard there who prevented that. And it was total chaos.
After your 5 weeks of training, you’re relocated to your battalion. So, this is your home from now on. You would stay there for your private to sergeant life. From day one to the end of your service, you hear a lot about North Korea from the officials.
They designate the North Korean military as our enemy. This was the first time when I learned that North Korea has invaded South Korea even after the truce multiple times.
I don't know if it's because I've been brainwashed, but now I'm convinced that they have the capability and will to do a lot of damage to the Korean Society. There's always a potential that the North Koreans can Invade us and the military's trying to prepare for that.
Looking back at the experience, I think I gained a few things. There's a saying in the military, If you can't make it work, make it work. I learned that if you really put your will and just do it, then I can really achieve...I feel like I can achieve anything.

Life At Camp Humphreys— The Closest US Military Base To North Korea
Camp Humphreys is located about 40 miles south of Seoul, in South Korea. It's the largest overseas US military base in the world. Despite being only 60 miles from the Demilitarized Zone that separates North Korea from South Korea, soldiers and their families live relatively normal lives, with schools, a shopping mall, doctors' offices, and even American fast-food chains all on base. Following is the text of the video.
Camp Humphreys is like a small American city. It's the largest US military base overseas. The camp is located in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. It's 40 miles south of Seoul and 60 miles from the North Korean border.
Camp Humphreys is an $11 billion complex. The camp has a $64 million shopping center. It looks like a regular mall with 60 different stores. You can also find a bunch of American food chains. The base has a school, golf course, and even a veterinarian.
For the most part, life goes on as usual, but it's a training facility for soldiers. They run drills across the camp to prepare for combat. Right now, about 25,000 people live there, but that number could rise to 42,000 by 2020.

South Korean Military Discharges First Transgender Soldier
South Korea’s first known transgender soldier pleaded to be allowed to continue serving after the military decided Wednesday to discharge her for undergoing gender reassignment surgery.
It was the first time in South Korea that an active-duty member has been referred to a military panel to determine whether to end his or her service due to a sex reassignment operation. South Korea prohibits transgender people from joining the military but has no specific laws on what to do with those who have sex reassignment operations during their time in service.
The army said in a statement that it concluded the soldier’s operation can be considered a reason for discharge.
It said the decision went through due process and was based on a related military law on personnel changes. Army officials cited a provision of the law allowing the military to discharge personnel with physical or mental disabilities if those problems weren’t a result of combat or in the line of duty.
After the ruling, the staff sergeant, who identified herself as a tank driver named Byun Hui-su, held a news conference at which she asked military leaders to reconsider their decision and let her serve as a female soldier.
She said becoming a soldier was her childhood dream and that she now wants to serve at the tense border with rival North Korea.
“Regardless of my sexual identity, I’d like to show everyone that I can become one of the great soldiers who protect this country,” Byun said, holding back tears. “Please give me that chance.”
Byun said she had sex reassignment surgery in Thailand in November after suffering depression over her sexual identity for an extended period. She said in early 2019 she had the top score in an official assessment of tank driving skills among her battalion staff sergeants.
Speaking at the same news conference, rights activist Lim Tae-hoon said he will fight alongside Byun and others to transform what he called “our savage military.”
Lim, the leader of the Seoul-based Center for Military Human Rights, took issue with the army’s legal justification for discharging Byun. “I can’t resist feeling wretched at the military’s vulgar mindset as they determined that the lack of a male genital is a physical disability,” he said.
South Korea’s state-run human rights watchdog recommended Tuesday that the army postpone its decision. The National Human Rights Commission said in a statement that referring the soldier to the military panel would be an act of discrimination over sexual identity and affect the soldier’s basic human rights.
Public views on gender issues in South Korea have gradually changed in recent years. Several gay-themed movies and TV dramas have become hits and some transgender entertainers have risen to stardom. However, a strong bias against sexual minorities still runs deep in South Korean society.
Activists say transgender people are likely to face harassment, abuse and insults, and many suffer from depression.

South Korea: Seoul proposes military talks with N. Korea
South Korea has offered to hold military talks with North Korea amidst growing tensions between Pyongyang, Seoul, and their Western allies, with South Korean Vice Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk announcing the proposal from the Republic's capital, Monday.
Speaking from the Defence Ministry in Seoul, Suh Choo-suk stated that the South Korean government has proposed to hold talks between North and South Korean representatives at the border village of Panmunjom, a site previously used for similar inter-Korea talks. He was hoping for a positive answer from their northern partners.
The meeting is pitted to take place on July 21. Further talks between representatives from both countries' respective Red Cross organisations have been proposed for August 1, with the reunification of families separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone to top the agenda.

Trans soldier speaks out after discharge from S. Korean military
성전환 육군 하사 강제전역... 계속 나라 지키고 싶다 입장표명
The South Korean army discharged a trangender soldier... citing medical reasons.
The person in question has spoken out publicly for the first time on the military's decision.
Kim J-yeon has the full story.
The South Korean soldier, who underwent gender reassignment surgery in Thailand last year while on leave, spoke publicly Wednesday for the first time about the military's decision to discharge her.
Staff Sergeant Byun Hee-soo, who was trained as a tank pilot after joining the military in 2017... said she thought being part of the military, considered one of the most conservative groups in South Korea, would help her deal with and overcome her gender dysphoria... a condition she says she's been struggling with since she was young.
Since I was young, my dream was to become a soldier to protect this country and its people. And although the training was tough, I was elated that my dream came true.
Her dreams were short-lived, however.
The Army said in a statement that it discharged her for what it called medical reasons... without specifying the details.
It referred to injuries that made her unfit to carry out her duties.
This follows last week's findings by a military medical team, which declared her handicapped.
The Army's statement also said that a military committee reviewed Byun's case, considering military law... and the arguments against her dismissal,... and that it will continue trying to protect the human rights of service personnel and to prevent any undue discrimination.
The Center for Military Human Rights Korea, an advocacy group, said the decision to discharge her is unjust,... and it plans to support Byun's legal efforts to reinstate her based on her desire to continue her service as a woman.

N. Korea slams Seoul-Washington joint military drills
북한 남북군사합의 성실 이행해야…한미 연합훈련 또 비판
North Korea has slammed Seoul and Washington for continuing to hold joint military exercises,... calling them rehearsals for war.
Pyeongyang's official Korean Central News Agency published an editorial on Saturday,... saying that the regime will not stand for confrontational actions that go against the move towards peace and reconciliation of the two Koreas.
It called on South Korea to follow through with its agreement to ease military tensions,... adding that participating in drills for nuclear strikes is an act of betrayal against the North.
The criticism comes despite Seoul and Washington's decision to end their massive annual exercises in a bid to improve relations with the North,... which, earlier this month,... fired a number of projectiles into the East Sea.

Balaclavas, guns, camouflage costumes, even a make-believe bad guy - any would-be soldier's perfect playground.
But the game is deadly.
The elite special forces unit of the South Korean police took part in anti-terrorism exercises Thursday.
Here, terrorists have taken bus passengers hostage.
The special forces commandos heroically go in, capture the terrorists and free the commuters.
It could be the set of an action movie with commandos dressed in black uniforms, wearing masks and bullet proof vests.
But their is no time for fun. Readiness is vital to the success of their operations.
These commandos have excellent bullet aim.
But then mock terrorists 20 metres (yards) away are easy targets.
The South Korean special forces consists of 128 highly trained men under the direction of the South Korean police.
Terrorist threats from arch rival North Korea have meant South Korea needs a strong special forces unit.
North Korean spies have been successful in infiltrating South Korea.
Recently some 25 North Koreans were in a stranded submarine, only to leave the ship to land on South Korean soil.
