Koroni (Κορώνη), a small town in the southwest of the Peloponnese on the Gulf of Messina, is about 30 km east of Methoni, 50 km south of Kalamata.
The picturesque town is the popular destination for many individual tourists. The beautiful narrow streets convey the Greek architecture and culture and the traces of the Venetians are still evident in the architecture in many places.
Koroni is dominated by a fort, which is strategically located on a peninsula. The walls merge into the high cliffs which provide a natural protection.
The town was founded by the Byzantines and later ruled by Venetians and Ottomans.
Worth seeing are the castle complex located in the cross-domed church Agia Sophia and the post-Byzantine church Agios Charalambos.

Der malerische Ort ist Ziel vieler Individualtouristen. Die schönen engen Gassen vermitteln die griechische Bauweise und Kultur, auch die Spuren der Venezianer sind in der Architektur noch an vielen Stellen erkennbar.
Koroni wird von einer Festung geprägt, die strategisch günstig auf einer Halbinsel liegt. Die Mauern gehen direkt in die hohen Klippen über, die einen natürlichen Schutz bieten.
Gegründet wurde die Stadt von den Byzantinern, später herrschten auch hier die Venezianer und Osmanen.
Sehenswert sind die in der Burganlage befindlichen Kreuzkuppelkirche Agia Sophia und die nachbyzantinische Kirche Agios Charalambos.

Koroni is a seaside town in Messinia in the South Peloponnese, 52 km northwest from Kalamata, famous for its Venetian Castle. It is one of the few habitable castles in the country. It is built into the hills with picturesque alleys with steps, two story houses with flowering gardens and tiled roofs. There are well known sandy beaches in the surrounding area with crystal clear waters and also some secret beaches in small bays.

Koroni Castle, Messenia Greece
Koroni Castle in Messenia grasps any traveller by just looking at it once in the beautiful village of Koroni. It's history as well as that of Methoni's Castle is linked with Venetian presense in the area in the Mediterranean Sea in Medieval Europe when Constantinople fell to the Crusaders in 1204 A.D. Based on the 'Partitio Romaniae', the Republic of Venice laid claims to most parts of Peloponnese but it was after 1209 A.D. that the Republic signed an agreement with Geoffrey of Villehardouin, Prince of Achaea to take possesion of Koroni's and Methoni's Castles in the treaty of Sapienza.
It was not until 1500 A.D when Koroni fell to to the Ottomans by Sultan Bayezid II in the Second Ottoman-Venetian War who surrounded and attacked the city with its army. In 1532 A.D. Koroni was retaken by Andrea Doria but it was lost again to the Ottomans in 1534 A.D. In 1685 A.D. the Venetians recaptured the city until 1715 A.D. when they finnaly losted to the Ottomans.
With the Greek War for Independence in 1821 A.D. against the Ottoman Empire, Koroni was liberated and became one with th erest of Greece in 1828 A.D.

The town is nestled on a hill below a Venetian castle and reaches to the edge of the gulf.
Koroni is a picturesque village, built on a hill right above the Messinian gulf. It has an imposing Venetian castle (partly ruined of course), a harbor well sheltered from all but Northerlies which is home to a number of fishing boats.
Waterfront restaurants/tavernas provide a wide-ranging selection of mouth-watering dishes. The area is renowned for its olive oil, fresh fish, sandy beaches (one of which is a turtle nesting site).
This is a mainland town with many characteristics of an 'island' village / town. Summer (late July and early August) is VERY busy, hot and dry. It would be wise to pre-book accommodation, Spring can be very warm but with some showers - flowers are wonderful in late March through April and into early May.

Η σημερινή εκδρομή αφορά τη Νότια Πελοπόννησο και πιο συγκεκριμένα την περιοχή της Πύλου, Μεθώνης και Κορώνης στο νομό Μεσσηνίας. Θα ξεκινήσουμε τη βόλτα μας στην αμφιθεατρεατρική, νησιώτικης ομορφιάς πόλη της Πύλου που αγναντεύει τα βράχια της Σφακτηρίας και τις εντυπωσιακές παραλίες του Ρωμανού, του Πετροχωρίου και κυρίως της Βοϊδοκοιλιάς, του σχεδόν με διαβήτη σχεδιασμένου κόλπου με τα διάφανα νερά! Στη συνέχεια θα μετακινηθούμε νότια προς τις οχυρωμένες πόλεις της Μεθώνης και της Κορώνης, περνώντας από τη Φοινικούντα. Κάστρα, γραφικές γειτονιές, ασφαλείς, οχυρωμένες παραλίες και άπειρες δυνατότητες για φαγητό και διασκέδαση! Θα ολοκληρώσουμε τη βόλτα μας στο Πολυλίμνιο, από το οποίο δυστυχώς όμως θα φύγουμε πολύ γρήγορα, λόγω ξαφνικής νεροποντής!!! Μία γοητευτική γωνιά της Πελοποννήσου, ιδανική για ένα σαββατοκύριακο ή για πολυήμερες διακοπές!
L'excursion d'aujourd'hui se déroule au sud du Péloponnèse, et plus particulièrement dans la région de Pylos, Methoni et Koroni en Messénie. Nous commençons notre promenade dans la ville de Pylos, construite en amphithéâtre, qui rappelle des paysages insulaires, Ensuite, nous nous baignerons aux plages impressionnantes de Romanos et Petrochori et surtout celle de Voidokilia, une baie toute ronde aux eaux transparentes! Ensuite, nous nous dirigerons vers le sud, aux villes fortifiées de Methoni et Koroni, passant par Finikounda. Châteaux, quartiers pittoresques, plages fortifiées et maintes possibilités pour manger et s'amuser!
Nous finirons notre balade à Polylimnion, mais malheureusement nous partirons très vite à cause d'une averse soudaine !!! Cette région est un coin charmant du Péloponnèse, idéal pour un simple week-end ou pour des vacances plus longues! Merci et à bientôt!!
