2002 City Bird Sanctuary Kota Kinabalu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia
Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre is the only remains of 24 hectares of mangrove forest that once existed extensively along the coastal region of Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Previously known as Likas Swamp or Likas Mangrove and later Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary, the Centre came foremost out of 20 wetlands selected by the Sabah Wetlands Inventory Committee in 1986
The Centre is an important refuge and feeding ground for many species of resident birds, as well as several migratory bird species from Northern Asia. In addition, it is a breeding ground for marine life protected by the Fishery Department of Sabah.
Apart from providing shelter and food for both resident and migratory species of wildlife, wetlands also prevent salt build-up in surrounding freshwater supplies, stabilizing sedimentation, storing nutrients and removing toxins.
This park features a 1.5 km or a 45 minute boardwalk which brings visitors deep into the mangrove jungle where the land meets the sea. This unique natural landscape give tourists a pleasant experience to enjoy fresh air and tranquillity while bird-watch birds from around the globe, including non-breeding winter visitors, are commonly sighted at the sanctuary, especially during migratory season of Asian birds (i.e. Sept-April).

Wild Life Park, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
I and my family visited Wild Life Park, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia before my conference (GLOCALL 2010) attendance at Le Meridien Hotel Kota Kinabalu. We could see some typical birds and wild animals in the tropical regions.
Kota Kinabalu a 5-Star Rated City
Sabah has also achieved national recognition for its social pillars. The city of Kota Kinabalu, under the stewardship of Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, has received a 5 Stars city rating by the Federal Government of Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu city is lucky to have permanent areas that have been gazetted as parks. The Likas Bird Sanctuary is only one of the two RAMSAR wetlands sites in the world besides Japan. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is a beautiful marine park within the city. Other parks and green spaces such as the Tun Fuad Park and Taman Ujana Tropika Park which are very popular with joggers. Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre
A quick peek at what can be seen at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre besides all the birds.
The Wetland Centre is only a 10 minute drive from KK town centre and is a great way to learn about the ecology of the region next time you're in KK.
2 days in Sandakan, Borneo
We spent 2 days and 2 nights in Sandakan - our primary goal was to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary and we thought a few days of hanging around the infinity pool.
But the actual highlight of our visit was wandering around the town following the Heritage Trail. The locals were incredibly beautiful and friendly people and we actually had sore cheeks from smiling so much!
Another highlight was seeing the top of Mt Kinabalu rising over the clouds as we flew from KK to Sandakan (we have tips on the best seats!).
The only thing missing from our adventure was a visit to the Rainforest Discovery Centre....just means we'll have to go back! :)
