KOTTIYOOR TEMPLE
Kottiyoor Temple is a prominent Shiva temple in Kerala. Vadakkeshwaram Temple is the common name of the temple from ancient time, but some of the local people addresses the temple as Ikkare Kottiyoor as it in the bank of the river close to the Kottiyoor village; to differentiate it from the shrine in the other side of the river. Thruchherumana Kshetram is the proper name of Kottiyoor temple. The temple is a special category temple under Malabar Devaswom board.[2]
There are two temples in Kottiyoor - one on the western bank of the Bavali river - and the other one on the eastern bank of the Bavali river. The shrine on the east bank (Kizhakkeshwaram or Akkare Kottiyoor) is a temporary[3] hermitage (Yaga shrine) opened only during the Vysakha festival. The Vadakkeshwaram or Ikkare Kottiyoor(The Thruchherumana Temple) on the western bank of the river is a permanent temple complex like all other temples. It remains closed throughout the year except for the 27 days of Vysakha festival. The temple is situated in a densely forested area amidst a sacred grove that covers about 80 acres. Mythology says that Akkare Kottiyoor, the shrine on the eastern bank of the river, was the location of Daksha Yaga, at the conclusion of which, Sati Devi immolated herself and thus committed suicide in this place.[4]
The Thruchherumana Temple was built after the Swayambhoo lingam was found; however the exact date of construction of temple is not known, the pilgrimage has been taking place for many centuries.[5]

വൈശാഖ വേളയില് കൊട്ടിയൂര് തീര്ത്ഥാടനത്തിനെത്തുന്നവര് കൈവഴികളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോ ള് ഇരുവശവും തൂക്കിയിട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പൂക്കള് കാണാം. വെള്ള നിറത്തില് മനോഹരമായി തൂക്കി ഇട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഇവ ആകര്ഷണീയതയുടെ മറ്റൊരു മുഖമാണ്.
ദക്ഷയാഗം നടത്തിയ കർമ്മിയുടെ താടി പ്രസാദമായി നൽകുന്ന ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏകദേവസ്ഥാനമാണ് അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ. സങ്കീർണങ്ങളായ ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളാൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ് ഈ ദേവസ്ഥാനം. ഓടപ്പൂവെന്ന താടി പ്രസാദവുമായാണ് തീർത്ഥാടകരുടെ മടക്കം.ക്ഷേത്രസങ്കല്പത്തിനും ക്ഷേത്രാരാധനയ്ക്കും പുതിയ മാനം കൈവരുത്താൻ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രമില്ലാ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് സമാനതകളില്ലാത്ത ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾപോലെ ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രസാദത്തിനുമുണ്ട് പ്രത്യേകത . കൊട്ടിയൂർ വൈശാഖ മഹോത്സവത്തിന് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്ന തീർത്ഥാടകർക്ക് പ്രസാദമായി ലഭിക്കുന്നത് താടിയുടെ രൂപത്തിലുള്ള ഓടപ്പൂവാണ്. ഐശ്വര്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായാണ് ഓടപ്പൂവിനെ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. വീടുകളിലും വാഹനങ്ങളിലും ഐശ്വര്യവർദ്ധനയ്ക്കായി ഇതു തൂക്കിയിടുന്നു.ഓടപ്പൂ പ്രസാദവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഐതീഹ്യം ഇങ്ങനെ. പരമശിവന്റെ ഭാരൃ സതിയുടെ പിതാവായ ദക്ഷൻ പ്രജാപതിമാരുടെ കൂടിയാലോചന എത്തി. മുനിമാരും ദേവന്മാരും എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്നു ദക്ഷനെ വണങ്ങി. എന്നാൽ പരമശിവൻ ഇരുന്നിടത്തുനിന്ന് അനങ്ങിയില്ല. ഇതിൽ കുപിതനായ ദക്ഷൻ സദസ്സിൽ വച്ച് ശിവനെ നിന്ദിച്ചു. ദേവന്മാരോടൊപ്പം യാഗപ്രസാദം കഴിക്കുന്നതിൽനിന്നും ദക്ഷൻ ശിവനെ വിലക്കി. ശിവൻ ദക്ഷനെ ശപിച്ചു. ഭഗവത് മഹത്വമറിയാത്ത ദക്ഷൻ ആടിന്റെ മുഖമായി നടക്കാൻ ഇടവരട്ടെ എന്നായിരുന്നു ശാപം.
ദക്ഷൻ തന്റെ ശാപമുക്തിക്കുവേണ്ടി ബൃഹസ്പതിസവമെന്ന യാഗമാരംഭിച്ചു. ലോകത്തെ മഹാത്മാക്കളെയെല്ലാവരേയും ക്ഷണിച്ചു. പത്നീസമേതം ദേവന്മാർ യാഗസ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുന്ന വിവരം ശിവപത്നിയായ സതിയുമറിഞ്ഞു. യാഗത്തിനു തന്നെയും കൂട്ടി പോകണമെന്ന് സതി ശിവനോട് അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ പരമശിവൻ മിണ്ടിയില്ല.
സതി ശിവന്റെ മനസലിയാൻ ന്യായവാദങ്ങൾ നിരത്തി. അച്ഛന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തിൽ മഹോത്സവമുണ്ടായാൽ ക്ഷണമില്ലാതെ പോകാം. പ്രജാപതിമാരുടെ സത്രത്തിൽ വച്ച് നിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ എന്നെ ആക്ഷേപിച്ചില്ലേ. അതൊന്നും ഞാൻ നിന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. അതിനാൽ നീ പോകരുത്. പോയാൽ നീ അപമാനിതയാകും. ദക്ഷപുത്രിയുടെ സ്ത്രീ സ്വഭാവം നിമിത്തം യാഗത്തിനു പുറപ്പെടുകതന്നെ ചെയ്തു. ശിവപാർഷദന്മാർ അവരെ അനുഗമിച്ചു. യജ്ഞശാലയിലെത്തിയ സതിയെ ദക്ഷൻ ഗൗനിച്ചില്ല .അച്ഛന്റെ അപമാനം സതി സഹിച്ചെങ്കിലും യജ്ഞത്തിലെ ഹവിർഭാഗം തന്റെ ഭർത്താവിനുവയ്ക്കാത്തതിനാൽ സതി കോപിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു; സർവാത്മാവായ ഭഗവാനോട് അച്ഛനല്ലാതെ മറ്റാരാണ് വിരോധം കാട്ടുക. അവരുടെ പാദം പോലും സ്പർശിക്കാൻ അത്തരക്കാർ അർഹരല്ല. വിശ്വബന്ധുവിനോടാണോ വിരോധം കാട്ടുന്നത്. അങ്ങയുടെ പുത്രിയായതിൽ ഞാൻ ലജ്ജിക്കുന്നു. അതിനാൽ ഞാൻ ഈ ശരീരം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. ശിവനെ മനസ്സിൽ ധ്യാനിച്ച് യക്ഷന്റെ യാഗാഗ്നിയിൽ സതി സ്വ ശരീരം ഹോമിച്ചു. സതി ദേഹതൃാഗം ചെയ്തുവെന്നറിീഞ്ഞ ശിവൻ കോപത്തോടെ തന്റെ ജട നിലത്തടിച്ചു. അതിൽനിന്നും ഉഗ്രരൂപിയായ വീരഭദ്രർ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. ശിവനിർദ്ദേശം കേട്ടയുടൻ വീരഭദ്രർ യാഗശാലയിലെ പ്രജാപതിമാരെയും ആക്രമിച്ചു. അഗ്നി കെടുത്തി യജ്ഞശാല പാടേ തകർത്തു. ഒടുവിൽ യജ്ഞാചാരൃൻ ഭൃഗുമുനിയുടെ താടി പറിച്ചെടുത്ത് എറിഞ്ഞു. ബാവലിപ്പുഴക്കക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂരിലെ തിരുവൻചിറയിലാണത്രേ താടിചെന്നു പതിച്ചത്. അങ്ങനെ യാഗത്തിന്റെ സ്മരണയ്ക്കും ഭൃഗുമുനിയുടെ താടിയാണെന്ന് സങ്കൽപ്പിച്ചുമാണ് ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ആദരപൂർവ്വം ഓടപ്പൂക്കൾ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്. വയനാടൻ മലനിരകളിൽനിന്നാണ് ഓടപ്പൂവിനുവേണ്ട ഈറ്റ ശേഖരിക്കുന്നത്. ഓടപ്പൂ വിതരണം ചെയ്യാൻ ദേവസ്വത്തിന്റെ കീഴിലുള്ള സ്റ്റാളുകൾക്ക് പുറമെ പത്തിൽപരം കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഓടപ്പൂവിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിലുമുണ്ട് പ്രത്യേകത. പാകത്തിനു മുറിച്ചെടുത്ത ഈറ്റ വെള്ളത്തിലിട്ട് ചതച്ച് കമ്പിച്ചീർപ്പുകൊണ്ട് ചീകിയെടുക്കുന്നു. വീണ്ടും വെള്ളത്തിലിട്ട് സംസ്ക്കരിച്ചതിനുശേഷമാണ് പ്രസാദമാകുന്ന ഓടപ്പൂവാകുന്നത്. ഓടപ്പൂനിർമ്മാണത്തിലൂടെ ഉത്സവകാലങ്ങളിൽ ജോലി ലഭിക്കുന്നത് ആയിരത്തിലധികം പേർക്കാണ്. ഉത്സവകാലങ്ങളിൽ വനം വകുപ്പ് നൽകുന്ന പ്രത്യേക അനുമതിയോടെയാണ് ഈറ്റ വെട്ടുന്നത്. ഇടവത്തിലെ ചോതി നക്ഷത്രം തൊട്ട് മിഥുനത്തിലെ ചിത്തിര നക്ഷത്രം വരെയുള്ള ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ഉത്സവം കൊട്ടിയൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്നത്. 28 ദിവസങ്ങളിലായാണ് ഉത്സവം.ഭണ്ഡാരം എഴുന്നള്ളത്തുനാൾ മുതൽ ഉത്രാടം നാള്വവരെ ദേവന്മാരുടെ ഉത്സവം. തിരുവോണം മുതൽ ആയില്യം വരെ മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഉത്സവം. മകം മുതൽ ഭൂതഗണങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്സവം എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്ക്, വയനാട് ജില്ലയോട് ചേർന്നാണ് കൊട്ടിയൂർ. പുഴയുടെ തെക്കു ഭാഗത്താണ് ഇക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിരം ക്ഷേത്രമുണ്ട്. വടക്കുഭാഗത്താണ് അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ ക്ഷേത്രം. വൈശാഖ ഉത്സവം നടക്കുന്ന അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂരിൽ ഉത്സവകാലത്തേക്ക് മാത്രമായി ക്ഷേത്രം കെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കും. ഉത്സവകാലത്ത് ഇക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പൂജകൾ ഉണ്ടാവില്ല.

Nowhere will you find the kind of souvenir that you can get at Kottiyoor temple during the festival. This is the Odapoovu' a whisk fashioned out of the reed bamboo that grows in the forest near Kottiyoor. It requires a special technique of pounding the young shoots with stones and retting in water before the white fibres are released. You buy this for friends and relatives back home for them to hang over doorways or perhaps in their car. Odapoo is considered as the beard of Daksha, who conducted a Yaga at Kottiyoor
