RUSSIA: MOSCOW: TRETYAKOV GALLERY RE-OPENS
Russian/Nat
One of Russia's most revered art museums has re-opened ten years after closing for repairs.
Refurbishment of The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow was hampered by a shortage of funds.
The long-awaited re-opening was attended by such dignitaries as the Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and the Mayor of Moscow Yuri Lyzhkov.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian):
Repair works coincided with the difficult period in our history: Perestroika. There were times when there was no money, not just hard currency, but even rubles. And this situation lasted a long time, months, even years.
SUPER CAPTION: Lydia Iovleva, Deputy Director of Tretyakov Gallery
contains some of the finest examples of Russian art including works by Vasiliy Kandinsky and Andrei Ryblov . The opening was attended by the Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and the Mayor of Moscow Yuri Lyzhkov and the Patriach
of the Russian Orthodox Church Aleksis II. The gallery closed during Mikhail Gorbachev's administration but re-building work was plagued by a shortage of funds. The Tretyakov has about 100,000 pictures in its vaults. Ten new galleries have been added to the main building. It comes a month after an exhibition of War Trophy art -
Impressionist paintings looted from the Nazis - opened at the Pushkin Gallery in the Russian capital.

Lumiere Hall Moscow
Lumiere Hall is a creative space with a new-format exhibition area that offers the opportunity to plunge into the world of art and creativity with the help of technology. The cozy atmosphere and original activity programme will appeal to all visitors.
The Lumiere Hall network of multimedia spaces began its existence with a platform in the centre of Moscow and rapidly gained the interest of citizens. Today, Lumiere Hall has branches in Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Yekatirinburg. This creative space opened up opportunities for original exhibitions and the unusual presentation of paintings of world famous artists.
In St. Petersburg, Lumiere Hall is located in the city centre, in the building of a former gas dispenser, which gives this place a defined historic atmosphere.
The creative space hosts multimedia exhibitions, original format film-nights, as well as fairs and festivals. Also, Lumier Hall is the perfect place for holding corporate events, lectures, seminars and conferences.
On complex territory, a second building was opened in a gallery format, where picture and painting exhibitions will be held on a continual basis. Apart from this, visitors have the opportunity to visit fascinating seminars, which will take place in several lecture halls, along with planned street lectures.
The Lumiere hall projection museum will become the new symbol of St. Petersburg, combining both unique spirituality and continuous development.
For guests of the Northern capital, this museum will be added to the must see list of places, while for locals it will be a place of exuberant meetings and pleasant time spent alone with art, where one can get away from life's hassles and get his head straight.

Taus Makhacheva
(35 – Russia)
Taus Makhacheva (b. 1983 Moscow, Russia) is known predominantly for her performance and video works that critically examine what happens when different cultures and traditions come into contact with one another. Having grown up in Moscow with cultural origins in the Caucasus region of Dagestan, her artistic practice is informed by this personal connection with the co-existing worlds of pre and post Sovietisation. Oftentimes humorous, her works attempt to test the resilience of images, objects and bodies in today's world.
The practice of Taus Makhacheva embraces a wide range of media including performance, video, and installations, which critically examine the results of different cultures and traditions meeting. Having grown up in Moscow with cultural origins in the Caucasus region of Dagestan, her artistic practice is informed by this personal connection with the co-existing worlds of pre- and post-Sovietisation. Often humorous, her works attempt to test the resilience of images, objects and bodies in today's world.
In her new work Quantitative Infinity of the Objective, the artist transforms the gallery space into a gym where the exercise machines appear in non-standardized shapes and sizes. The audio component announces a series of authoritative clichés used in institutional and private spaces. Removed from their familiar context the obsessive and traumatic aspect of the language is amplified revealing crippling communicative models loaded with passive aggression. Resilience to this intergenerational use of language is in question here as the performers circulate through the space exhibiting anxiety, doubt and finally the perfecting of their skills. The experience of the piece provokes a reflection on a possibility of detaching, healing and resisting current social patterns.
