February 16 – March 25, 2017
536 W 22nd Street
Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce the gallery’s inaugural exhibition for Kim Guiline, the first solo presentation of his work in the United States. The lauded Korean artist is one of the foundational members of the Dansaekhwa movement that emerged in South Korea during the 1970s. The exhibition will feature a survey of work that includes rarely shown paintings from the 1960s, his well-known black and white paintings from the 1970s, and bright monochrome paintings from the 1980s-2000s. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, February 16, 6-8 PM.
Dansaekhwa translates to “monochromatic painting,” and is also identified by experimental modes of paint application—scraping or pushing of pigments through canvas—that aimed to break away from classical approaches to art making. The resulting paintings were considered to be avant-garde, both aesthetically and in their criticism of political and art establishments. Kim Guiline’s paintings thus can be seen as a reflection of the sociopolitical landscape of Korea during the 1970s, a period of authoritarian rule and government surveillance. In contrast to propagandistic art praising the government, Kim Guiline produced abstract paintings that connected Korean heritage to the natural environment, often expressing a spiritual relationship to color and materiality.

Yun Hyong–keun 楊·亨根 (1928-2007) Dansaekhwa Korean Monochrome Painting South Koreans
tonykwk39@gmail.com
Yun Hyong-keun (1928-2007) was born in Seoul and received his BFA from the School of Fine Arts at Hongik University in 1957. One of the most significant Korean artists of the twentieth century, Hyong-keun became associated with the influential Dansaekhwa (monochromatic painting) movement of Korean artists who experimented with the physical properties of painting and prioritized technique and process in the 1960s. The scarcity of materials following the Korean War (1950-1953) and the country’s relative isolation from the international art world led the artists to construct their own sets of rules and structures in relation to abstraction.
Using a restricted palette of ultramarine and umber, Yun created his distinctive compositions by adding layer upon layer of paint onto raw canvas or linen, often applying the next coat before the last one had dried. He then diluted the pigments with turpentine solvent, allowing them to seep into the fibers of the support, staining it in a similar way to traditional ink on absorbent paper. Working directly on his studio floor, he produced simple arrangements of intensely dark, vertical bands surrounded by untouched areas. The division was softened by the blurred edges caused by the uneven rates of absorption of oil and solvent, and the compositions often developed over several days, even months, with the artist adding further layers or letting the pigments bleed out gradually.
Since 2016, David Zwirner has represented the work of Yun Hyong-keun in New York. The artist’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at prominent institutions worldwide, including Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (1994); Stiftung für konkrete Kunst, Reutlingen, Germany (1997); Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg (2002); and Art Sonje Museum, Gyeongju, Korea (2002). He has participated in recent group exhibitions held at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2015); Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea (2013); and Daegu Art Museum, Daegu, Korea (2011). His work was included in the São Paulo Biennial in 1969 and 1975; the 46th Venice Biennale in 1995; and the Gwangju Biennale in 2000. Other notable solo exhibitions have been held at Inkong Gallery, Daegu, Korea (1986); Gallery Ueda, Tokyo (1990); Gallery Hyundai, Seoul (1996); Blum & Poe, New York; PKM Gallery, Seoul (both 2015); among others. In 2018, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul will host a major solo exhibition of the artist’s work.
Yun visited New York in 1974, where he encountered the work of American postwar artists including Mark Rothko, which led him to further explore ways to divide pictorial space. The inherent physicality of his works, in turn, impressed artists such as Donald Judd, who invited Yun to exhibit at his spaces on Spring Street in New York and in Marfa, Texas (Chinati Foundation) during the 1990s in what would be the artist’s first solo presentations in the United States.
Work by the artist is represented in permanent collections internationally, including the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas; Fukuoka Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul; and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. The artist has been the recipient of awards including the 5th Korean Fine Art Grand-Prix Exhibition (1978).

Gallery Talk - The Long Breath: Postwar Korean Art, 1953-1979
March 12, 2015 - Joan Kee, Associate Professor of History of Art at the University of Michigan and a leading authority on contemporary Asian art, presents an overview of important artists and developments in postwar Korean art, including the rise of performance art and the significance of ink painting.
Kee points out that no clear-cut division exists between modern and contemporary in Korean art, and that this absence is not so much an omission as an intentional acknowledgment of the competing senses of time and history with which Korean artists engaged from roughly 1953—the provisional end of the Korean War—to 1988, the year of the Seoul Olympics, Korea's proverbial coming-out party. The force of these engagements was especially palpable in the 1960s and 70s. This talk presents an overview of some of the most important artists and developments, including the emergence of Tansaekhwa, the loose constellation of abstract paintings which ranks among the most important artistic movements in post-1945 Asia, as well as the rise of performance art and the significance of ink painting. Such explorations continue to resonate today, as contemporary art worldwide becomes increasingly, and paradoxically, more expansive and less inclusive than ever before.

Yeondoo Jung - Cinemagician
Yeondoo Jung's new theater piece, Cinemagician, aims to recreate the tensions between the magician and audience that arise from watching the unfolding of an unknown event or trick. Inspired by the nineteenth-century French filmmaker George Melies, whose experiments as a magician and cabaret illusionist led him to play with special film effects such as the stop trick (stopping filming, substituting something in front of the camera for something else, and then resuming filming), multiple exposures, dissolves, and hand-painting colors on film, Cinemagician will present a live happening juxtaposed with a projected one. As a live magician (South Korean celebrity Eungyeol Lee) manually constructs the setting of the stage that he is standing on, a camera will simultaneously shoot the stage, and project its feed on a screen hanging above. As the performance progresses, the version shown on the screen will drift from a strict live feed to one transformed by illusions only possible in cinema, leaving the audience to oscillate between the suspension of disbelief and a paradoxically ravishing spectacle.
One of the most prominent artists working in Korea today, Yeondoo Jung was born in 1969 in Jinju, South Korea and received his MFA from Goldsmiths College in 1997. He is the recipient of the 2007 Artist of the Year Award, given annually by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. He has had solo exhibitions in Asia, Europe as well as the United States and his works have also been shown in numerous museums and biennales worldwide, including the 51st Venice Biennale and the Liverpool Biennale in 2008.
