Nepal,Kathmandu,Durbar Square,Kumari Palace,Tribhuvan Museum-Trip to Nepal,Tibet,India part 13
In Nepal a Kumari is a pre-pubescent girl selected from the Shakya or Bajracharya clan of the Nepalese Newari community. The Kumari is revered and worshiped by some of the country's Hindus as well as the Nepali Buddhists, though not the Tibetan Buddhists. While there are several Kumaris throughout Nepal, with some cities having several, the best known is the Royal Kumari of Kathmandu, and she lives in the Kumari Ghar, a palace in the center of the city.
Tribhuvan Museum is in the part of the palace west of Nasal Chowk, overlooking the main Durbar Sq area, was constructed by the Ranas in the middle to late part of the 19th century. Ironically, it is now home to a museum that celebrates King Tribhuvan (r 1911–1955) and his successful revolt against their regime, along with memorials to Kings Mahendra (1955–1972) and Birendra (1972–2001).

Kathmandu durbar square, Nepal
Kathmandu durbar square is spread over large area and consist of many temples including Kasthamandap, Vishnu Temple, Indrapur Temple and Taleju temples. Kathmandu durbar square is much bigger than Bhaktapur or patan durbar square. Kumari Chowk at the end of durbar square was most curious attraction for us. We wanted to see the kumaris who are chosen as human incarnation of the Hindu goddess, Durga. Our guide suggested us to come back after finishing the tour at 4 PM to see her and glad we did.
The unique thing about temples in Nepal is their wooden carving, which are undoubtedly one of the best in the world. One of the striking feature is struts design, which supports the temples. Each strut is fine example of art with god, goddess and mythical figures carved in the middle. Only few temple inside Kathmandu durbar square are active and devotee can be seen all the time.

Living Goddess Kumari of Patan, Nepal

Is the world Outside the temple a challenge for a living goddess?
Read the story...
On a sunny day of March 2014, we thought of staying a while more in that small temple house which was once an abode of Kumari. We asked the locals around if we could find the house of Kumari. Hundreds of devotes, the sound of grand festivity and celebration, none of it was there.
Somebody showed us the wooden staircase to a small 02 bedroom house. With a little hesitation, we called out, Hello, is somebody there? There was a lady peeped out of a window and asked us why we were there? We are from Belgium and would love to meet Kumari? She came down, a nice humble lady, greeted us and took us up-stairs to a simple but clean room.
All around on the walls of the little dark room, there were Kumari¹s photos hanging. These picture were taken when she was a living Goddess with thousands of people around the temple worshiping her and seeking her blessing since she was named a Kumari in year 2010. We started imagining how it would be for her and we were so curious to meet her.
She appeared to be a little girl of age 12, slim and beautiful. Her actual name was Samita, which she hardly remembered, as she was always called living goddess, Kumari.
In Nepal, Kumari is a tradition of worshiping young girls as a manifestation of the divine female energy. Kumari is selected by the Nepali Newari community and worshiped at the main temple of Patan and Kathmandu as the incarnation of the goddess Durga ( Goddess of Power ) until she begins her menstruation, after which, it is believed that the goddess vacates her body.
Samita was the previous Kumari of Patan and now still lives for a little while in this small house in the temple compound with her parents and brother. When we asked her how her life was after Kumari, she didn¹t have any expression. As a Kumari, she lived in a temple and was the center of admiration when she was carried on a chariot during festivals and worshiped by thousands of devotes.
Her mother told us that she was happy to be back with the children of her age but was struggling to catch up with the pace of study and up-bringing as many things surprised her and many others were of no interest as she had gained a wide sense of maturity before her age. She was having extra classes at home now to catch up with her study in school.
It looked like a challenging transition for her as the world outside the temple is absolutely strange to her. We have seen many human turning as God-man or monk but for an ex-Goddess, becoming a human can be very perplexing. Some part of the society also fears to marry a Kumari as she is believed to be an incarnation of goddess. We left the place with curiosity and worries, would she ever enjoy her conjugal life?
Surely, we wanted to meet her again to know about her life being an ex-living goddess.
Not after a long time, when Helga and I were in Nepal for some work, we again knocked the same door. Her mother, now an acquaintance, was happy to see us. 06 months had passed and now Samita looked more confident girl. She was comfortably conversing with us in English, shared her daily routine, and most importantly going to school. She plays sarod and on our request played some nice music for us.
She wishes to open a Facebook account soon and loves history. It felt great seeing how nicely she was adapting to the new environment and ready to find her identity.

Kathmandu Durbar Square - Nepal
The Durbar square is surrounded with spectacular architecture and vividly showcases the skills of the Newar artists and craftsmen over several centuries. The royal palace was originally situated at Dattaraya square and was only later moved to the Durbar square location.
The Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled over the city. Along with these palaces, the square also surrounds quadrangles revealing courtyards and temples. The square is presently known as Hanuman Dhoka, a name derived from the statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee of Lord Ram, near the entrance of the palace. The preference for the construction of royal palaces at this site dates back to as early as the Licchavi period in the third century. Even though the present palaces and temples have undergone repeated and extensive renovations and nothing physical remains from that period, names like Gunapo and Gupo, which are the names referred to the palaces in the square in early scriptures, imply that the palaces were built by Gunakamadev, a king ruling late in the tenth century. When Kathmandu City became independent under the rule of King Ratna Malla (1484--1520) the palaces in the square became the royal palaces for its Malla kings. h.
Some of the parts of the square like the Hatti Chok near the Kumari Bahal in the Southern section of the square were removed during restoration after the devastating earthquake in 1934. While building the New Road, the Southeastern part of the palace was cleared away, leaving only fragments in places as reminders of their past. Though decreased from its original size and attractiveness from its earlier seventeenth century architecture, the Kathmandu Durbar Square still displays an ancient surrounding that spans abound five acres of land. It has palaces, temples, quadrangles, courtyards, ponds, and images that were brought together over three centuries of the Malla, the Shah, and the Rana dynasties. Kathmandu's Durbar Square is one of three durbar (royal palace) squares in the Kathmandu Valley. It is the site of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, which was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and where important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch, still take place today. The palace is decorated with elaborately-carved wooden windows and panels and houses the King Tribhuwan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum. It is also possible to visit the State Rooms inside the palace. At the southern end of Durbar Square is one of the most curious attractions in Nepal, the Kumari Chowk. This gilded cage contains the Raj Kumari, a young girl chosen through an ancient and mystical selection process to become the human incarnation of the Hindu mother goddess, Durga.
