Sandstorm in Kumtag Desert near Shanshan (Xinjiang, China) during our dinosaur dig field season 2012
This is active sedimentology at work :-)
One of the strongest desert sandstorms I have experienced so far.
Hint: I cannot advise to use a camcorder under such weather conditions - even today there are often grains of sand blocking the lens lock...

Shanshan, Xianjiang province, China
Standing in the desert of Shanshan, which is next to the hottest town in China whose name is As hot as fire.
Even here there are irrigation ditches bringing the snow melt down from the mountains to a patch of land which contains all the raisin and sultana crop.
But where I am standing..... is just desert.

Heavy sandstorm hits China's Gansu Province, expected to affect S. Korea Tuesday
中 고비사막 모래폭풍 베이징 강타… 오후부터 서울 영향
A massive sandstorm blowing from the Gobi desert has coated Chinese cities with yellow dust.
Traveling west, pushed along by strong winds wind,... the sandstorm is expected to affect South Korea from this afternoon.
Kim Hyo-sun reports.
A sandstorm hit Zhangye City, northwest of China's Gansu Province on Sunday afternoon.
Whipped up by strong winds of around 17 meters a second,... it formed a sand wall as high as one-hundred meters.
What looks like a massive tsunami,... the sandstorm engulfed the city within minutes,... reducing visibility to less than ten meters.
Major expressways were shut down and vehicles stopped in the middle of the road.
As the sandstorm traveled west,... Beijing also came under the influence of the sandstorm.
Coupled with high fine dust levels, the sandstorm sharply worsened the city's air quality.
It's also expected to affect South Korea.
The country's weather agency forecasts that the yellow dust from China could affect central regions, including Seoul, from Tuesday afternoon.

Sandstorm engulfs Kashgar Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang
A sandstorm engulfed cities and counties throughout Kashgar Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Monday, shrouding areas in mushroom-like clouds of dust and sand.
Bachu County was hit by the sudden sandstorm at around 6 p.m. local time. Less than 10 minutes later, the whole county was enveloped by sand and dust, forcing vehicles to drive slowly.
By around 9 p.m., the sandstorm continued to sweep across to neighboring Yuepuhu County, reducing visibility to less than 100 meters. The sandstorm lasted around an hour in Yuepuhu County and visibility has begun to improve.
Other regions in Tarim Basin in southern Xinjiang were also hit by sandstorms last week.
The area has suffered more sand and dust storms than in previous years because of the El Nino weather system, according to the Kashgar meteorological bureau.

Time-lapse Xinjiang/China
Sandstorms Hit NW China's Xinjiang
Sandstorms hit Yuepuhu county in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region for the second time this year on Sunday afternoon.
Large areas of the county experienced sand and duststorms that lasted until Monday morning.
The sky turned brown and pedestrians wore marks to protect their faces from the dust.
It is a sandstorm today and it is difficult to go out. Visibility is reduced to less than 50 meters, so we have to reduce speed and move slowly, said Yalikun Wubuli, a local resident.
Extra police officers were deployed due to safety concerns. Local transportation authorities set up checkpoints on roads, and checked vehicle lights.
We split into groups of four to patrol, and told drivers to slow down to avoid any traffic accidents on such dusty days, said Aini Abulaiti, a police officer.
The sandstorms are expected to gradually taper off later on Tuesday, according local meteorological authorities.
