Kunming: the City of Eternal Spring
Yes, Kunming is as awesome as it sounds. A city in CHINA with little/no pollution, mega chill vibes, and because it's neither too hot in summer or too cold in winter, there are always flowers around! So if you're planning some travels in Yunnan, I'd really suggest at least 2 days here to soak up all those Kunming happy vibes!

Kunming Lake Boat Trip at the Summer Palace / 昆明湖 (颐和园 / 頤和園)
Kunming Lake / 昆明湖 is the central lake on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. Together with the Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake forms the key landscape features of the Summer Palace gardens.
With an area of 2.2 square kilometres (0.8 sq mi), Kunming Lake covers approximately three quarters of the Summer Palace grounds. It is quite shallow, with an average depth of only 1.5 metres (5 ft).
Kunming Lake is a man-made lake. Its predecessors were called Wengshan (Jar Hill) Pond and Xihu Lake. They were reservoirs which had been used as sources of water both for the city and irrigation of fields over a period of 3,500 years. Guo Shoujing, a famous astronomer and engineer in his time, developed it into a reservoir for the capital of the Yuan Dynasty in 1291. The conversion of the area into an imperial garden was commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor with the work being carried out between 1750 and 1764. In the course of creating the gardens, the lake area was extended by a workforce of almost 10,000 laborers.
In the year 1990 and 1991, the Beijing Municipal Government undertook the first dredging of the lake in 240 years. A total of 652,600 cubic metres (853,600 cu yd) of sludge were removed in the work. 205 Japanese bombs dropped during the Sino-Japanese War were also found.
Kunming Lake is designed to represent the traditional Chinese gardening practice of one pond, three hills / 一池三山. Like the islands in Hangzhou's West Lake and the Forbidden City's Taiye Lake, they were intended to represent three islands of the immortals mentioned in the Classic of Mountains and Seas: Penglai, Yingzhou, and Fangzhang. Kunming's three are named South Lake Island (t 南湖島, s 南湖岛), Round Fort Island (t 團城島, s 团城岛), and Algæ-view Hall Island (t 藻鑒堂島, s 藻鉴堂岛)
Many features of Kunming Lake are inspired by natural scenery from the region south of the Yangtze River. In particular, the West Dike is a recreation of the famous Sudi Dike on West Lake in Hangzhou. It cuts diagonally through the southern part of the lake. Like the Sudi Dike, the West Dike is connected through six bridges, each with its own distinctive style: Jiehu, Binfeng, Yudai, Jing, Lian, and Liu.
The largest bridge on Kunming Lake is the 17-Arch Bridge that connects the eastern shore with South Lake Island, representing Penglai. Close to the bridge on the eastern shore stands a bronze ox sculpture. According to Chinese legend, Yu the Great used an iron ox to prevent flooding. Since the bronze ox is located on the eastern dike of Kunming Lake in the direction of the Forbidden City, it was probably erected in order to protect the Forbidden City from flooding.

Fun times at the Summer Palace in Beijing, China | BLCU day trip
This was my second visit to the Summer Palace. The first time I went was a few years ago and it was a nice leisurely day with a lot of walking. This visit had a time restriction (as it was part of a school trip) and we had to be back on the bus home within a few hours. If you’re planning to go, 3 to 4 hours is not enough in my opinion. There are just so many things to see like Suzhou street, the long corridor, the marble boat and things to do like walking up Longevity Hill and going for a cruise on the Kunming Lake. If you have the energy, I would recommend doing a full day there because there’s a lot of land to cover. You can save time and energy by catching a boat to certain places though.
Here’s how the day panned out:
00:20 Things to do and see at the Summer Palace
01:45 The two photo(video)bombers/most annoying people in Beijing
03:31 The Long Corridor
04:30 Longevity Hill
04:51 Kunming Lake
06:04 The 17 Tunnel Bridge

Yanqi Lake – Beijing, China
The Yanqi Lake in Beijing, China is a picture of serenity with great vistas of waterscape and landscape. An increasingly popular choice for locals and tourists alike, the Yanqi Lake was chosen as the location for the Belt and Road Forum 2017, an initiative that promotes closer economic cooperation and connectivity among countries from around the world. Encircled by the mountains of Jundu, Hongluo and Jingdeng it is a wonder to behold during the daytime, but its beauty is dulled by the darkness during the night. However, that is now history as OSRAM Lighting Solutions breathes new life to the nighttime scenery.
Following the exceptional success and record-breaking attempt with the Wuhan Two Rivers and Four Banks light installation, OSRAM Lighting Solutions rose to face the challenge of Yanqi Lake. The environment around Yanqi Lake naturally generates harsh conditions, making this project extremely difficult. With tropical storms and snow likely occurrences, the survival of outdoor electronic equipment is slim and so it was required that the solution be robust, reliable and capable. The OSRAM OLUX® LED Flood Light 150W RGBW was selected because it can withstand the elements, come rain, snow or shine. Controlled by over 400 e:cue Butler S2, the resulting light display is akin to that of a traditional Chinese landscape painting, highlighting the natural beauty of the lake and the surrounding area. The color-changing display creates a mesmerizing and dynamic swathe of light that washes over the lake and mountains like shimmering brushstrokes in the night.
The wondrous light installation even uses the mountains themselves as a canvas, creating the effect of an invisible brush dancing to the rhythm of nature and highlighting all its glory. As the landscape lights up, the view serves to remind spectators of the past, the technology shows what’s possible in the present and together they can act as an inspiration for what the future may hold.
By integrating state-of-the-art innovations with the natural environment of Yanqi Lake, OSRAM Lighting Solutions was able to create a painting made of light, underlining the incredible beauty of China’s landscape while simulating traditional Chinese art. The success of this project shows once again that for OSRAM Lighting Solutions, the impossible is just an obstacle to overcome. Our vast experiences, knowledge and determination to keep striding forward and reach greater heights made this stunning amalgamation of nature and technology a solid and bright reality.

BEIJING - SUMMER PALACE in WINTER
The Summer Palace or Yi he yuan is a palace in Beijing, China. The Summer Palace is mainly dominated by Longevity Hill (60 meters high) and the Kunming Lake. It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is water. The central Kunming Lake covering 2.2 square kilometers was entirely man made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In its compact 70,000 square meters of building space, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures.
The Summer Palace started out life as the Garden of Clear Ripples in 1750 (Reign Year 15 of Emperor Qianlong). Artisans reproduced the garden architecture styles of various palaces in China. Kunming Lake was created by extending an existing body of water to imitate the West Lake in Hangzhou. The palace complex suffered two major attacks--during the Anglo-French allied invasion of 1860 (with the Old Summer Palace also ransacked at the same time), and during the Boxer Rebellion, in an attack by the eight allied powers in 1900. The garden survived and was rebuilt in 1886 and 1902. In 1888, it was given the current name, Yihe Yuan. It served as a summer resort for Empress Dowager Cixi, who diverted 30 million taels of silver, said to be originally designated for the Chinese navy (Beiyang Fleet), into the reconstruction and enlargement of the Summer Palace.
In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace an outstanding expression of the creative art of Chinese landscape garden design, incorporating the works of humankind and nature in a harmonious whole. It is a popular tourist destination but also serves as a recreational park.

The Summer Palace (Chinese: 頤和園;), is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing, China. It serves as a popular tourist destination and recreational park. Mainly dominated by Longevity Hill (万寿山; 萬壽山; Wànshòu Shān) and Kunming Lake (昆明湖; Kūnmíng Hú), it covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres (1.1 sq mi), three-quarters of which is water.
Longevity Hill is about 60 metres (200 feet) high and has many buildings positioned in sequence. The front hill is rich with splendid halls and pavilions, while the back hill, in sharp contrast, is quiet with natural beauty. The central Kunming Lake, covering 2.2 square kilometres (540 acres), was entirely man-made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill.
In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.
The entire Summer Palace is centred around Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, with the latter covering about three quarters of the area. Most of the important buildings were built along the north–south axis of Longevity Hill, which is divided into the front hill and the back hill. There are three small islands within Kunming Lake: Nanhu Island, Zaojiantang Island and Zhijingge Island. The West Dam of Kunming Lake divides the lake into two. The East Dam was constructed during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor. The attractions in the Summer Palace may be divided into six different sections or scenic areas: the Halls, Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake, the Farming and Weaving Picture Scenic Area, the Long Corridor, and the Central Axis area.Wikipedia
