Japan Blue Jeans Explains Why Japanese Denim Has to Be Handmade
Get the latest from HYPEBEAST TV by hitting the SUBSCRIBE button!
Some of the best jeans in the world are crafted in Kojima, a seaside district of Kurashiki, Okayama province. Widely known as Japan’s “denim capital,” Kojima has long been the textile mecca of the country and is where jeans were first produced in Japan. Amongst the cluster of denim manufacturers in the area, Japan Blue has separated itself with loyal followers through its quality in production. “We spend most of our time developing and creating the material, because that’s the essential element to quality denim” says Hiroki Kishimoto, longtime designer and founder of Japan Blue Jeans.
Continuing the tradition of crafting durable and timeless denim, Kishimoto and his team undergo a meticulous process each season, from the special wash and dye treatments to the way the denim is hand cut and sewn. While denim originally hails from the States, Kojima denim has set itself apart from competitors in the market by portraying a unique beauty in their jeans that reflects Kojima’s culture. We visited Japan Blue’s studio in Okayama to learn more about the “Kojima way” of creating denim.
In addition to the traditions of denim, Japan Blue is working with renown denim retailer Okayama Denim on an upcoming collaborative project. While details are sparse for now, be on the look out for this very special release when it drops later this year.

Made better in Japan
Every day at Edwin in Harajuku, you’ll see many fashion-forward tourists coming in to shop for premium denim.
Whether it’s tapered, skinny, or rigid, they seem to like it all…
A woman from San Francisco was checking out slim denim…
This man from Tennessee came to look for black jeans.
He finds one that costs about 17,000 yen(about 150 USD) and goes into the fitting room to try it on.
Tourist from Tennessee/ “The quality I can definitely tell its up from the brand that I was wearing before, I won’t say names, but I certainly like these.”
And, he happily makes a purchase.
Edwin is a Japanese denim brand that’s been in business for over 70 years.
But they’ve only opened this shop 2 years ago, hoping to attract more tourists.
Now, 70 percent of the store’s sales comes from overseas visitors.
Many shoppers not only appreciate their high quality, but for their stitching techniques.
For example, the back of the jeans is skillfully stitched…
It’s part of their denim design…
Tourist from Boston/ “I means it’s just the quality of the stitching, the way that they are assembled, some of the details, the selvage line, and the thread that they use for that.”
The shop has bonsai trees at the entrance, and paper lanterns for their lightings.
They want visitors to get a feel of a local shopping experience.
Keitaro Ikeda, Shop Manager, Edwin Retail/ “We have skilled craftsmen that stitches our products. That’s why Japanese jeans don’t rip. We hope to tell each customers how great Japanese jeans are.”
A denim maker from western Japan is also trying to attract more visitors by starting a unique service in Tokyo.
Betty Smith is a brand from Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture, an area famous for denim and textile production.
This brand is known for their quality of the textures.
They even have denim that uses gold thread from Kyoto.
The new service they launched called “Omiyage-jeans”, meaning souvenir jeans, will allow customers to experience a denim making process.
They can choose the patch, button, and rivets, from a variety of
colors and designs.
Then, staff will teach you how to use the button attaching machines that were installed for this service.
One by one, customers can enjoy putting the parts together.
The cost of this service including the jeans is only 7000 yen (about 60USD).
Yasuhiro Oshima President, Betty Smith/ “We want to show the different types of Japanese jeans we have available. We also want more tourists to get interested in the production area and visit Okayama.”
Jeans is not a Japanese invention.
But denim makers are trying to prove to the world, that the shopping experience and the quality could be made better in Japan.

Kurashiki, Japan - Kurashiki Station (2019)
Kurashiki (倉敷市 Kurashiki-shi) is a historic city located in western Okayama Prefecture, Japan, sitting on the Takahashi River, on the coast of the Inland Sea.
As of March 31, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 483,576 and a population density of 1,400 persons per km². The total area is 355.63 km².
The modern city of Kurashiki was founded on April 1, 1928. Previously, it was the site of clashes between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the Heian period. It gradually developed as a river port. During the Edo period, it became an area directly controlled by the shogunate. Distinctive white-walled, black-tiled warehouses were built to store goods. During the Meiji Restoration (Japan's Industrial Revolution period), factories were built, including the Ohara Spinning Mill, which still stands as the nostalgic tourist attraction Ivy Square.
On August 1, 2005, the town of Mabi (from Kibi District), and the town of Funao (from Asakuchi District) were merged with Kurashiki.
Kurashiki is the home of Japan's first museum for Western art, the Ohara Museum of Art. Established in 1930 by Magosaburō Ōhara, it contains paintings by El Greco, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, and Renoir. The collection also presents fine examples of Asian and contemporary art. The main building is designed in the style of Neoclassicism.
The old merchant quarter is called the Bikan historical area. It contains many fine examples of 17th century wooden warehouses (kura, 倉) painted white with traditional black tiles, along a canal framed with weeping willows and filled with koi. The area has no electric poles in order to make it more closely resemble the look of the Meiji period. One of the city's former town halls was located in the Kurashiki Kan, a European style building constructed in 1917.
In 1997 a theme park called Tivoli (after the park of the same name in Copenhagen) opened near Kurashiki Station. After ten years of operation it was closed in 2008, with a massive debt.
The Great Seto Bridge connects the city to Sakaide in Kagawa Prefecture across the Inland Sea.
Kenzo Tange, winner of the 1987 Pritzker Prize for architecture, designed the former Kurashiki City Hall in 1960.
