A visit to Kushiro Shitsugen National Park in eastern Hokkaido in search of the majestic Dancing Cranes aka Japanese Crane aka Red-crowned Crane, sp. Grus japonensis, an icon of Japan. Very rare, only about 1000 birds now live in Japan. Long journey from Sapporo -- a 4-hr express train ride to Kushiro, then a 1-hr bus trip to the site in Tsurumidai, just before Tsurui village. Worth it all!

Last day in HOKKAIDO!!! We drive around the NATIONAL PARK KUSHIRO SHITSUGEN and observe the wetlands from various viewpoints and observatories, meet a cute but dead baby of Red-Crowned Cranes, a bunch of Ezo Deers, then observe the lotus ice phenomenon on the meandering KUSHIRO River and a lovely sunset at a farm hoping Cranes would fly over. But there's so much more to see in Hokkaido!! I already can't wait to go again!!

Heute bin ich im Shiretoko National Park unterwegs. Diese Halbinsel weist die höchste Bärenpopulation in Japan auf, sodass manche Wanderwege nur mit einem Tour Guide begehbar sind. Alternativ werden auch Bootstouren von Utoro bis zum Shiretoko Kap angeboten, bei denen man die einmalige Umgebung vom Wasser aus bewundern kann. Am nächsten Tag machte ich noch auf meinem Rückweg nach Sapporo einen kleinen Zwischenstopp in Stadt Kushiro, um mir dort das weitläufige Sumpfgebiet anzuschauen.

Today I am in the Shiretoko National Park. This peninsula has the highest bear population in Japan, so some trails are only accessible with a tour guide. Alternatively, boat trips from Utoro to the Shiretoko Cape are offered, where you can admire the unique environment from the water. The next day, on my way back to Sapporo, I made a little stopover in Kushiro to have a look at the extensive wetland.
