Kvalvika hike, Lofoten, Norway INFO
Planning to go to Lofoten, Norway, and do some hiking? We went there in July 2017.
One of the most popular day hikes and wild camping sites in Lofoten Islands in Norway is route Kvalvika beach in the island of Moskenes, about 100 kilometers from the main city Svoelvaer.
The official starting point with a free parking place is located next to the paved public road. If parking is full don’t leave your car alongside the road since you might get a parking ticket from the wrong parking!
The beginning of the path is well marked with a sign. However, there are signs for other optional starting points as well, but they require paid parking since they are on the private land.
The distance from the free parking area to the beach is about 2 kilometers and the path is well marked and we’ll used, so there’s not really need for a map or a risk of getting lost on the way.
Terrain is quite rocky and at times it might be wet, so the path is best walked with good hiking shoes.
Like in so many other hiking routes in Norway, there’s s no shortage of magnificent scenery!
The short distance from the road makes Kvalvika beach very popular wild camping sites. There’s no official facilities like toilets or running water, but on the other hand, it is also free of charge.
Kvalvika beach is actually made up of two separate beaches, the northern and the western beach. During the low tide these two beaches join together, but during the high tide the only way is to use the path crossing the hill between the two beaches.
The western beach has also some nice camp sites to pitch a tent. However, this beach was quite dirty with many plastics washed down with the sea. There was a sign asking all visitors to take some rubbish along from the beach and to carry them away in order to get it cleaned.
We decided not to return the same way we came, but instead took another route back to the parking area. This made the trip longer, but the scenery made it well worth the effort. (Kartta) This path took us back to the same public road and the last 5 kilometers we walked on the road back to the car. All together our round trip was 12 kilometers.
If you like easy and short distance hike and don’t mind other campers close by, the Kvalvika beach is a good option. We really enjoyed it as a good day trip destination. However, if you are more into wild camping with the campsite a bit harder to reach but where there’s much less people, you should try Horseid beach. We went there for three nights and you can see a video of that hiking trip very soon here in our channel.

Norway Hiking Lofoten Islands - Kvalvika beach / Horseid beach
This is a video of my second hiking experience, in Lofoten Norway. We started at Fredvang and went back by Reine. Since I could not find any words to describe this lovely landscape, this video is silent (except for the music).

Kvalvika Beach, Norway, 4K

Kvalvika, Lofoten Islands, Norway
Today we visited beautiful Kvalvika beach, as seen in the movie 'North of the Sun' which we saw earlier this year at the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.
The beach is about an hour's hike from the road and was only a short detour on our drive from Ramberg to Å. The hut on the beach that features in the movie is still there and even had people staying in it for the summer.

Wild camping in Norway - Horseid Beach hiking INFO
If mountainous landscapes, peace and relative loneliness is what you want from your hiking trip, then Horseid Beach in Lofoten, Norway, would be a great destination option.
The starting point is located in the village of Reine in Moskenes Island. From the harbor you can buy a ticket to a water bus, which will take you to the nearby fjords and villages. The trip costs a few euros per person and takes passengers to two villages: the first stop is a village called Bunesfjorden, where most of the day-hikers get off the boat. The second and final stop is Kirkefjord (Kjerkfjord), from which the path leading to Horseid Beach begins.
The beginning of the path is marked with the signs. The route is very simple: first there’s climbing up the hill between the two mountains, then descending to the bottom of the bay into the beach. Therefore, it should be fine to do this hike without a map or a compass.
A fairly steep climb and heavy pack bag will make the hiker sweat, but the cold water in the small rivers flowing from the mountains can quench the thirst and fill the drinking bottles.
On the top of the hill an awesome landscape opens up to the vast sandy beach of Horseid. The destination seems to be just a stone's throw away, but the high elevations and the steep mountains rising from the sea can fool the eye and there’s still some four kilometers’ hike to do. Descending path is partially difficult to walk, and large, partially loose stone blocks have to be stepped on with care.
The last part of the trip is a flat, easy-to-walk, occasionally wet grassland. Eventually, the grass changes to sand, and as we walked here in the first week of July, the dunes were covered with a blanket of bright yellow and strongly fragrant flowers.
One of the highlight on the way was this nest full of baby rabbits, which were curled together trying to hide from the eyes of the eagles soaring the skies above.
Upon arriving to the beach, one just has to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Horseid beach is on the west coast of the Lofoten, so the winds blowing from the Atlantic Ocean can change the weather in a moment. Therefore, make sure to enjoy the sun and its warmth right away when it appears.
It’s not hard to find campsites at Horseid's beach, since the place is not hugely popular because of its remote location. Here you can really focus on the basics: Pitching a tent without hurry, collecting firewood, cooking an outdoor meal, and just enjoying life without a cell phone coverage or wifis.
The beach is like from the holiday advertisement: fine white sand and clear blue water. The only difference is that there are hardly any other people around and, of course, that the water is freezing cold.
The Horseid Beach is located above the Arctic Circle, so in July the midnight sun is shining throughout the night. Those who haven’t experienced it may have trouble sleeping, but on the other hand, the sounds from the braking waves and gentle sea breeze along with the fresh and crispy air can lull any hiker to a fast sleep.
If at all possible, you should really spend more than just one night in Horseid: Time goes quickly while exploring and climbing nearby cliffs and mountains, or if one has extra energy, it can be spent by discovering the hidden treasures underground. But first of all, Horseid Beach is best suited for enjoying a real nature and it is the place, where one can feel how small we are compared to the masterpieces of creation.

Ep 05 | WE HIKED ONE OF LOFOTEN MOST POPULAR HIKES // RYTEN // NORWAY
Today we hiked one of Lofotens very quickly becoming popular hikes due to again, Instagram. You would recognise this hike from people taking photos of themselves looking like they are hanging from a cliff overlooking the beautiful Kvalvika Beach. We loved the hike, from start to finish, it was much more than the final destination, the journey to us was just as good, if not better. This hike is located up near the town of Ramberg, it's classified as a medium hike in difficulty, and we can confirm that. The hike is recommended to take around 4-5 hours, which is what we did it in, but could easily be done in less time as we stopped a lot along the way for photos as well as having lunch, we also stayed at the top for over an hour.
We hired our car from Moskenes car rental
We stayed at the HI Hosteling in Å
We cooked all our own food, groceries from ROMA 1000
