Phayao Lake - Northern Thailand
Kwan Phayao is situated in Mueang Phayao District in Phayao Province. It is the biggest fresh water lake in Northern Thailand and the fourth biggest in Thailand after Bueng Boraphet, Nong Han Lake and Bueng Lahan. The word “kwan” in Thai dialects means “lake”. Kwan Phayao is a natural lake with a mountain range in its backdrop. The source of water in the lake is from 18 streams. Its water volume per year is 29.40 million m3 in average. Over 48 species of freshwater fish are found in the lake, which covers an area of 12,831 rai. The scenery that is natural and captivating for visitors is the reason why it is renowned to be the heart of Phayao Province.Restaurants as well as parks for people to relax are found in the area. In the past, Kwan Phayaowas an alluvial plain with the long winding path of Ing River running from the north to the southeast of the plain. There were also ponds of different sizes and water channels that flow down from Khun Kao DoiLuang and connected, making the plain fertile. Since then, many people came to settle in the areaand formed a community.In the middle of the lake, historical remains of a submerged temple known as “Tilok Aram Temple” built during the reign of King Tilokarat are found. On the full moon day of the 3rd, 6th and 8th lunar month or also known as Maka Bucha Day, Visakah Bucha Day and Asalha Bucha Day, a candle light procession (Wien Tien) in Phayao Lake takes place at dusk. People make offerings of flowers, incense and candles on the boat that circles the temple for three times to worship the Buddha image of Luang PorSila. Kwan Phayao during these times is remarkable with the colors of the sky, shining candle lights that reflect in the water on full moon night. The incomparable atmosphere of being by the lake makes Mueang Phayao another place worth visiting. You will feel content to participate in the ceremony and to see the beautiful culture and traditions that the locals have preserved.

Kwan Phayao is situated in the capital district of Phayao Province. It is the largest freshwater lake in Northern Thailand and the fourth largest in Thailand. Tarin Angskul was a recent visitor, and sent us this report.

Phayao Lake (Thai: กว๊านพะเยา, rtgs: Kwan Phayao, IPA: [kwáːn pʰajaw]) is an semi-natural freshwater lake in northern Thailand. It covers an area of 12,831 rai (20.5 km²) at an elevation of 380 m. The lake has a mean depth of 1.7 m. The town of Phayao is at the southeast corner of the lake.
The lake is fed by the Ing River, which empties to the north, and to a lesser degree by the Tam River, which empties into the south of the lake. At the east, the lake empties into the Ing River, which then flows to the Mekong. To the south and west of the lakes are rice paddies, at the mouth of the Ing River is marsh area. More info visit :

Exploring Phayao Lake - Northern Thailand
A beautiful November 2014 in Phayao, Thailand. This small village doesn't have a lot of tourist activities but that's exactly what makes it so wonderful. It can be peaceful and quiet early in the day with nice cool breezes during certain times of the year. Decided not to over produce or add music to this video in order to capture the simple beauty and tranquility of Phayao.

Bob takes a motorcycle trip around Kwan Phayao (Phayao Lake). He explores the secrets of this hidden wonder of northern Thailand. Fishermen fishing on the lake, in flat-bottomed wooden rowboats, using cast nets. He chances upon an iron buffalo, the plows the rice fields of Thailand. There are also fish pens, goldfish, ancient ruins as well as a modern temple with a sculpture garden, including a statue of Guan Yin. There is a rural Thai school and there are cattle egrets, great blue herons, and great egrets in abundance.

What to See in Phayao Chiang Rai...
Kwan Phayao, or Phayao Lake, covers around 20 square kilometres and was formed by the creation of a dam by Thailand’s Fisheries Department in 1941. Prior to the dam’s construction the area was filled by a number of smaller lakes and swamps, with their levels changing seasonally with the rains.
Today Phayao Lake is a very popular spot with local tourists and is also an important fishing resource. Wander down to its banks in the early morning and you’ll see fishermen heading out while by mid-morning the lakeside restaurants will be setting up for another day of drinking and eating including of course, grilled lake fish.
The lake-side is a popular recreational area with; afternoon aerobics and keep fit classes, picnicking families, strolling couples and evening eating and drinking going on all along the promenade and adjacent cafes and restaurants. Hire a boat to coast out onto the waters to Wat Tilokarum in the late afternoon, rent a bicycle and ride around the lake or sit in the park and catch the photographic sunset views; wonderful!
Wat Analayo Thipphayaram
Wat Analayo is one of the more interesting hilltop wats in Thailand’s north. The temple is set on the first range of low hills, more or less opposite Phayao town on the far side of the lake. The wooded hillside houses an eclectic collection of Buddha images, shrines, pagodas and halls and is set in lush tropical gardens with a real jungle feel to them.
