This Is How Unique Soviet Architecture Disappears In Kyiv
The tram dispatch building was built in 1982 to control the city tram routes, but was used as a popular bar until it’s recent closure. It is now threated with demolition and with the prospect of only existing “in the form of a black-and-white picture that people will share through their Facebook accounts.”
Fazenda attracted both locals and tourists alike, not just for it’s drinks, but rather for the building’s unique aesthetic. “There is a famous worldwide style called brutalism, which refers to modernism in the 70s-80s.” however, “all the buildings of this style are usually enormous, for instance, the 12-floor buildings of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.” Yet the size of tram dispatch building makes it unique, as it “is like a smaller copy, which is also built in this style.” It is unofficially recognised as being an iconic piece of Soviet architecture.
Despite being saturated by Soviet architecture, Kyiv finds itself conflicted as “they are not recognised as being monuments of cultural heritage” and specialists try their best to avoid architectural styles associated with the USSR. Currently Kyiv only has one monument of national importance, The Palace of Culture “Ukraine”, that was officially recognised in 1996 after it’s construction, and one monument of local importance, Kyiv Kids and Youth Palace. Despite this, “society is in the process of realising the value of such objects” and they are slowly becoming an “interest to society”.
Illegal Raves in Europe's Only War Zone: BIG NIGHT OUT Ukraine
Ukraine is a politically polarised nation in the midst of a destructive civil war. In this episode of VICELAND’s Big Night Out, Clive Martin investigates how the young are evading patrols and curfews through the illegal party scene in what is currently Europe's only active war zone.
From foam parties only miles from the frontline, to being taught a traditional dance by the Russian militia, this is clubbing like you've never seen it before.

Revealed - The Palaces Of Ukraine's Energy Oligarchs
A short drive from Kyiv stand the twin palaces of two Yanukovych-era executives at Ukraine's state energy company Naftohaz. Police have been investigating allegations of fraud at the company worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The two oligarchs, who have not explained the origin of their families' spectacular wealth, are now running for Parliament - and with it, the prize of immunity from prosecution. Ukrainian Sociologists Discuss The Country's Changing Public Opinion 4 Years After Maidan
Four years ago, Ukrainians took to the streets with the aim returning their country to the path of European integration, ending police brutality and bureaucratic tyranny, and radically changing the system of power.
In some ways, Ukraine has come a long way since the 2014 Euromaidan revolution. The old militia-style police was disbanded and replaced with a reformed National Police. Ukraine created specialized anti-corruption bodies, and reform followed in other sectors, including healthcare and education. The year 2017 finally saw the long-awaited ratification of the European Association Agreement, as well as the introduction of visa-free travel regime with the European Union.
But Ukraine is also a country at war. The active conflict against Russia-led separatists in the country’s occupied eastern territories remains the top concern for many Ukrainians and continues to divide society. Moreover, progress has been slow in Ukraine. The lack of judicial reform, infighting within Ukraine’s new anti-corruption agencies, and the struggling economy have only added to rising frustration within Ukrainian society.
What has really changed in the past four years? What changes does Ukrainian society now expect? What are the issues that divide and unite Ukrainians?
On the fourth anniversary of Revolution of Dignity, Hromadske spoke with Liana Novikova, a junior research analyst at Kyiv National Institute of Sociology, and Pavlo Burkovskyi, a political analyst in Democratic Initiatives Foundations, to discuss these questions.
We also separately sat down with Ella Libanova, the director of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences’ Institute for Demography and Social Studies, to get her thoughts.

Kiev, Ukraine Incentive Sample Program
Ukraine is a country in Central and Eastern Europe. It has an area of 603,628 km², making it the second largest contiguous country on the European continent, after Russia. Ukraine borders the Russian Federation to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively.
Ukraine became independent when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. This dissolution started a period of transition to a market economy, in which Ukraine was stricken with an eight-year recession. Since then, however, the economy experienced a high increase in GDP growth.
Ukraine is a unitary state composed of 24 oblasts (provinces), one autonomous republic (Crimea), and two cities with special status: Kiev, its capital and largest city, and Sevastopol, which houses the Russian Black Sea Fleet under a leasing agreement.
The country is home to 46 million people, 77.8 percent of whom are ethnic Ukrainians, with sizable minorities of Russians (17%), Belarusians and Romanians. The Ukrainian language is the official language in Ukraine. Russian is also widely spoken. The dominant religion in the country is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which has heavily influenced Ukrainian architecture, literature and music.
Ukraine's climate is moderately continental; at the southern coast of Crimea it can be described as subtropical of the Mediterranean type. Summers are mostly warm and dry, and winters are usually mild and west. The average temperature in January is -7 Centigrade and in July +19 Centigrade.

Ukraine Celebrates Europe Day
People in Kiev, Ukraine, staged traditional activities on Saturday to celebrate the Europe Day.
Before an EU-flag-raising ceremony held at the square of the Presidential Palace, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko addressed the people that comprehensive reforms are well underway in the country and nothing will deter Ukraine from joining the EU.
Later, Ukraine's female drum corps started the opening ceremony with their traditional performances at St. Michael's Square, where the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Kiev's mayor Vitali Klitschko and ambassadors from EU member countries were presented.
Artists from Ukraine and other European countries also held a music concert at the square, with visitors tasting exotic food, taking part in games and activities, and learning about the culture and history of Europe.
A motorcycle parade, bicycle race and square dances were also held across Kiev, as well as other states across Ukraine.
The Europe Day, inaugurated by Ukraine's former President Leonid Kuchma in 2003, falls on the third Saturday in May each year to allow the Ukrainians to learn more about the EU.

Right Sector. The Great Ukrainian Reconquista
The Great Ukrainian Reconquista: What is the Right Sector fighting for?
We, the warriors and commanders of the Right Sector are actively fighting the regime, remembering the heroism of King Svyatoslav the Courageous of Kyiv, King Danylo of Galicia, of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the warriors of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army; implementing the right of a people to rise against injustice; and aware of our responsibilities before the dead and injured heroes of the Maidan.
We are fighting
For the right of every Ukrainian to human dignity...
For a fair criminal trial of Berkut and other dogs of the occupational system...
Against the humiliation and impoverishment of the Ukrainian people...
Against the war of the government with its own people...
For responsible voters and politicians...
For the election of judges...
Against corrupt and marginal democracy...
Against degeneracy and totalitarian liberalism...
For traditional folk morality and family values...
For Ukrainian families having many children...
For a spiritually and physically healthy youth...
Against a culture of consumerism and eroticism...
Against any form of integration on terms dictated from outside of Ukraine...
For unity and worldwide greatness of the Ukrainian nation...
For a great Ukrainian and European Reconquista... Everything is only beginning! From our Maidan, the rebirth of Kyivan-Rus/Ukraine commences, the rebirth of Europe commences.
Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to our heroes!

Dozens of captured or destroyed Ukrainian military hardware were laid out in central Donetsk’s Lenin Square, Sunday. This was an action by the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk militiamen to mock Kiev’s Independence Day celebrations.
Among the Kiev’s military vehicles in exhibition was a BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher, a BMD-2 infantry combat vehicle and a T-84 armored tank.
Earlier on Sunday hundreds of marching troops and military hardware paraded the streets leading to Maidan Square in Kiev in celebration of the 23rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. This was the first military parade since the previous president, Viktor Yanukovych, abolished the practice in 2009.

1+1 channel news (a-ha, Kiev, 4.11.2010)
Well, not the best coverage of the event, but there are some moments with fans (and me among them :)
Here's the translation:
- The emotions after the farewell concert of Scorpions are still hot, but now there is an other good-bye to Ukrainians. Now the Nowegian a-ha band. Fans are dropping tears and singing hits. Let's have a look, is our correspondent Margharita Sytnik crying too. Hello, Rita, what emotions do the nords have on their farewell concert?
- Scandinavians are in their own style, they are quite calm, the athmosphere is romantic, but the fans are sad, because they don't want to say gooodbye to those who followed their youth. a-ha will sing 25 songs in Kiev, it's a retrospective of their hits. Tens of camions have been brought the technics for best sound, and the band took 5 chefs, because they like to eat good and useful food. They also need a spa-salon in the hotel to relax after the concert.
The concert will last nearly 2 hours with the hit Take on me in the final. The musicians don't say, what they will do after the concert, because they didn't want to do press-conferences and answer the questions about their break.
But they will still be together for this month, and continue their tour in Belarus with some final concerts in Oslo.
