I Think you might arrive at Kyoto station by train. I know you have heavy luggage’s, but do not forget to grab this Kyoto City Map.
You can get this map at the tourist information center in Kyoto station.
I know this is the old school, but this map helps you a lot to make a travel plan in Kyoto.
This map is made by Kyoto City Tourism Association, so that this is the official map of Kyoto.
Lot of useful information that you cannot miss. Especially world heritages sights.
If you open the map, you will find it out that the map is separated into 4 major areas.
For example, if you want to visit this, find it in the map and check the surroundings. There are lot of things to see that you might miss if you do not check this map before.
If you forget to get this map at Kyoto station, you also can get this at tourist information center at Kawaramachi street.
And also, do not forget to ask about the bus map. This map will help you to navigate you to the right bus to your next destination.

City Walk in Kyoto Japan/Shijo Street from Shijo Kawaramachi to Gion
【Shijo Street (Shijo Kawaramachi~Gion)】
Shijo Street (Shijo-dori) runs in the center of Kyoto, Japan from east to west through the commercial center of the city. Shijo means Fourth Avenue of Heian-kyo, the ancient capital.
The eastern end of the street is Yasaka Shrine and the western end is Matsunoo Shrine. The street is particularly busy with pedestrians and traffic from the east end to Karasuma Street. The east end passes through the courtesan's district of Gion, with the historic street of Hanami Lane branching off to the south, with the famous Ichiriki Chaya at the corner. It then crosses the Kamo River at Shijo Bridge, and from there to Karasuma Street (Shijo Karasuma) the sidewalk is covered (except at major streets) and features several department stores, such as Daimaru and Marui. The center of this area is the intersection with Kawaramachi Street (Shijo Kawaramachi), a very busy shopping area.

Downtown area of Kyoto City
Downtown area of Kyoto city is roughly the block between Karasuma and Kawaramachi Streets on the Shijo Dori. Parts of Sanjo Dori are also part of the downtown area and Sanjo Dori is specially known for it's drinking and eating establishments. The Shijo dori area consists many department stores, high end shops and restaurants. You can translate Shijo and Sanjo dori as fourth and third avenues.
Many foreign tourists, when they visit Kyoto city make it a point to spend an evening around this area. The Teramachi shopping arcade is another famous place for boutique shops and Nishiki Market is known for foods that are famous for Kyoto. Is there a more pleasant destination to take a commercial stroll than the shopping arcades of downtown Kyoto? It there is, I haven't taken it. Nishiki - Dori is aother covered arcade that specializes in food and is known as Kyoto's Kitchen. For foodies, which I am not, this is a delightful street.
How appropriate that Kyoto, known for among other things, the Kyoto Accord should have a commercial centre that is most car-free. This is what every city should strive to look like.
