Music lovers and theater-goers alike are in for a treat next week as a wave of local and international music masters will descend upon Seoul for a series of spectacular concerts.
Our Paul Yi gives us a preview. Known as the Viola Legend, the Russian master of classical music Yuri Bashmet recently came to Seoul to share his world-renowned talents.
This past week, the renowned conductor led Russia's leading chamber orchestra, The Moscow Soloists, in a well-received performance at the Seoul Arts Center.
The concert showcased a variety of pieces from the Baroque and Romantic eras.. featuring award-winning Korean pianist Son Yeol-eum.
Bashmet commented on Korea's growing presence in the classical music world.
In recent international viola competitions, young Korean musicians have been attracting a great deal of attention. With that in mind, we've included a viola solo in the arrangement of this program.
But the celebration of the classics doesn't stop there.
Leading European musicians and singers will be performing at the LG Arts Center for a two-day run at the beginning of June.
The Paris-based Orchestre des Champs-Elysees will be teaming up with the Collegium Vocale Gent, one of the world's most prestigious choirs.
The two classical music giants will be under the leadership of Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, who will lead them in a performance of Mozart's Requiem.
The Korean Soprano Im Sun-hae will take the spotlight as the evening's soloist, following her highly successful tour of concert halls in Europe and North America.
And finally, the Seoul Namsan Traditional Theater will present the show Tago: Thundering Sound from June 1st.
The heart-thumping drum performance is aimed at attracting a broad audience for traditional Korean music.
It's just one of the many examples of how Seoul is becoming a global hub of art and culture.

Korean conglomerates planning more R&D centers in Seoul

Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor and LG Group will build more R&D centers in Seoul... to counter the rising competition from rival companies in the global market.
Analysts say... setting up these centers in the capital city would help these firms attract higher-quality research personnel.

Some of Korea′s largest conglomerates are building research and development outposts in the capital city of Seoul,... a move seen as an attempt to attract more high-quality human resources.
Tech giant Samsung Electronics is building a state-of-the-art R-and-D center on 33-thousand square meters of land in the Umyeon-dong area of Seocho-gu in southern Seoul.
Around 10-thousand researchers are expected to move into the new center,... which is reportedly envisioned as a more eco-friendly... and somewhat more creative facility than the conventional office building.
The move follows the company′s completion of new research complexes in Gyeonggi-do province one in the city of Suwon last November... and another in Hwaseong in March for the study of electron material.
The company spent nearly 14 billion U.S. dollars on R-and-D last year... and recruited more than 69-thousand 3-hundred researchers.
Automotive giant Hyundai Motor is reportedly considering turning its campus in Yangjae-dong into a research complex,... after having acquired a plot of land in the Samsung-dong district earlier this year.
And on Thursday, electronics giant LG Group held a ground-breaking ceremony in Magok Industrial Park for its LG Science Park.
Upon completion, the facility will be the largest technology convergence research center in Korea.

테헤란로 - Walking on Teheranro, Seoul, Korea
Teheranno (alternatively Teheran-ro, translation Tehran Boulevard) is a street in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea. It runs from Gangnam Station through Yeoksam-dong and into Samseong-dong. It is colloquially known as Teheran Valley (after Silicon Valley) due to the number of internet-related companies operating there. The district of Gangnam-gu experienced phenomenal growth and waves of construction, with Teheranno becoming one of the busiest streets in South Korea. Its counterpart, Seoul St. in Tehran, Iran, runs in the north of that city, close to the Evin district.
Teheranno is a 3.5 km section of Seoul City Route 90, and runs eastwards from Gangnam Station to Samseong Station and the COEX/KWTC complex. Yeoksam and Seolleung stations are also on Teheranno. All stations are on Seoul Subway Line 2.
Some of Korea's tallest skyscrapers and most expensive real estate are in Teheranno, while Seoul Metropolitan Government estimates that more than half of Korea's venture capital, some 200,000,000,000 won (approximately $200,000,000), is invested in Teheran Valley.
Teheran-ro was named after Seoul's sister city, Tehran, which is the capital of Iran. Most of Korea's major corporations are located here, lighting up the night view of the sky. You can experience traditional Korean culture at Korea Cultural House and enjoy great performances at LG Art Center.
Teheran-ro has been called the center of Korean IT industry since 1995. Many IT venture companies, such as Ahn Lab, THRU-net, Netian, etc selected Teheran-ro area for their offices. It is often called as Teheran Valley, named after Silicon Valley of California.
Representative landmarks of Teheran-ro include LG Art Center and Gangnam Finance Center. LG Art Center is the cultural hub in the middle of Gangnam where we can appreciate quality performances. POSCO Tower is also famous for its outdoor art piece named ‘Amabel’ of Frank Stella. Inside the tower, POSCO Art Museum((poscoartmuseum.org) is housed with the collection of ‘Cheori Cheolcheol-TV Chandelier, TV Tree’ by Nam June Paik.

And to explain what's going on in South Korea right now, we have our Won Jung-hwan in the studio for us.
So Jung-hwan, what do you have for us today?
Hi Mark, I'm here in the studio today to tell you about a well-known musical which is currently on right here in Seoul,… the musical Mamma Mia.
As many people know,… it's a heart-touching story of a mother and daughter,… featuring 22 hit-songs from the world famous pop group ABBA,… including 'Dancing Queen' and 'Honey Honey'.
The story centers around a 20-year-old girl named Sophie, who lives with her mother Donna on a Greek island.
Sophie has never known the identity of her father, but after discovering her mother's old diary, she finds out that she has three possible dads and decides to invite them all to her wedding.
Yes, I do know about the story. I have seen the musical, and the movie too. But why are you introducing the well-known musical today? What's so special about it?
Yes, besides introducing the musical to our viewers,... today, I wanted to explain the recent trends in Korea's musical industry.
Last week, Mamma Mia reached 2-million ticket sales,… making it the fastest musical to reach that milestone in South Korea.
The musical first premiered in 2004,... so considering for more than 15 years,... 2-million ticket sales sounds a bit small,… BUT according to industry insiders,… every one person watching a musical is equivalent to 10 people watching a movie. So it's actually quite a lot.
Only a few musicals have surpassed 2-million ticket sales in Korea. The musical 'Cats',… which was the number one before, took some 23-years to reach that level,… so you get the idea how well Mamma Mia is doing in the Korean market.
And if we look into the ticket sales closely,… the recent trend indicates that ticket sales have uniquely been strong among people in their 40s and 50s,... suggesting that those groups are opening their wallets for more cultural activites these days.
According to country's largest online ticket sales website,… audiences in their 40s have been constantly showing a growing number in the past few years with the number reaching almost 30-percent. This number is almost similar to people in their 20s and 30s, who are known as the top consumers in the musical market.
Compared to the recent musicals which some people our age don't understand,... we are simply used to ABBA's music which was played back in the 70's and 80's. That is why we feel very attached to this musical.
Besides ABBA's music,... I was simply curious as the musical has been going on for so long in Korea. I was so excited that I even skipped my dinner.
Many people have tried to figure out the secret of Mamma Mia's success in Korea. But the answer is simple love and joy.
And that universal appeal, combined with the internationally acclaimed songs of ABBA,… is the secret for its long run.

This video from a few years back still gets me butterflies in my stomach with such thrills- because this was my very first piece I played with these living legends Dong-Suk Kang and Youngho Kim. We had so much fun in this concert together, and they'll always be one of my biggest musical heroes and inspirations.
This piece is such a joy to play. Full of colors and smiles throughout. And all three of us studied in the states, so we were pretty serious and nostalgic about playing this national anthem of the US in the middle of this piece????
즐거운 곡 하나 공유할게요. 벌써 몇년 전에 연주한 영상인데요. 제가 정말 진심으로 존경하는 강동석선생님과 김영호선생님과 연주하면서 너무나 행복했던 기억이 아직도 생생합니다. 그래서 곡은 정말로 신나는 곡이지만, 제 마음속은 이 두 대가들 덕분에 아주 감동의 도가니였어요. 중간에 미국 국가도 잠깐 등장하는데, 세명 모두 미국에서 공부했어서 나름 학생때 추억에 잠기기도 했고요. 아무튼 이렇게 존경하는 분들이 주변에 있는 것 자체만으로도 우리에게는 정말 큰 힘이 되는 것 같아요.
