Trees & Trails and Barton Arboretum - LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens
Enjoy an invigorating hike or a leisurely stroll through Trees & Trails at Burden, part of the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. The trail includes approximately 3 miles of interactive walking paths and boardwalks through an urban forest and wetlands in the heart of Baton Rouge. The trails are open to the public from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. seven days a week for unguided exploration. Trees & Trails also offers educational opportunities for schools, scout troops and other youth organizations. Project Learning Tree tours provide fun-filled learning experiences that enhance understanding of trees, ecosystems and the environment.
Steele Burden designed the Barton Arboretum in memory of Scott Duchein Barton, a close friend and founding member of the Burden Foundation. The arboretum is enclosed by spruce pine and has a circular drive through live oaks which memorialize friends and dignitaries who over the years made significant contributions to the AgCenter. Native trees were planted among the pines and a small pond provides a setting for quiet reflection. Included in the arboretum are the James Wandersee Palmetto Walk and the Early American Camellia Collection.

Places to see in ( Baton Rouge - USA )
Baton Rouge is a city on the Mississippi River, and the capital of Louisiana. Antebellum landmarks include the castle-like Old Louisiana State Capitol, now a museum, and Magnolia Mound Plantation, with its French Creole house. LSU Rural Life Museum is a complex of refurbished buildings illustrating 18th- and 19th-century life. On the river, the USS Kidd is a retired WWII destroyer that is now a museum.
Baton Rouge is a major industrial, petrochemical, medical, research, motion picture, and growing technology center of the American South. It is the location of Louisiana State University, the LSU System's flagship university and the largest institution of higher education in the state. It is also the location of Southern University, the flagship institution of the Southern University System, the only historically black college system in the nation. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge is the 10th-largest in the United States in terms of tonnage shipped, and is the farthest upstream Mississippi River port capable of handling Panamax ships.
The Baton Rouge area owes its historical importance to its strategic site upon the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. This allowed development of a business quarter safe from seasonal flooding. In addition, the city built a levee system stretching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and low-lying agricultural areas. The city is a culturally rich center, with settlement by immigrants from numerous European nations and African peoples brought to North America as slaves or indentured servants. It was ruled by seven different governments: French, British, and Spanish in the colonial era, West Floridian, United States territory and state, Confederate, and United States again.

Port Hudson Historic Site - Trails in Louisiana Near Baton Rouge
My recent (8-25-17) hike of the Port Hudson Historic Site. One of the most unique trail systems in Louisiana, this site gained designation as a Historic Landmark in 1974. The siege of Port Hudson began on May 23, 1863. Roughly 30,000 Union troops, were pitted against 6,800 Confederates. The ensuing battles constituted some of the bloodiest and most severe combat in the entire Civil War.
A moderately difficult 6 miles of out and back trails.

LOUISIANA'S FRONTLINE: 125 Years of Agricultural Research (Part 1)
There's a crucial battle being fought on Louisiana soil -- a struggle to maintain and improve our standard of living. The state's humid climate makes it one of the most challenging places in America to grow crops and raise livestock. Endless waves of mutating insect pests, weeds, disease and extreme weather bombard our fields, forests, and coastland. For more than a century, the LSU AgCenter's Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station has been the successful frontline of defense against these enemy combatants. The video documentary, LOUISIANA'S FRONTLINE: 125 Years of Agricultural Research takes you on an eye-opening scientific journey that will forever change the way you think about agriculture and research that makes it possible.
The Burdens at Windrush, circa 1923
Members of the Burden family enjoy a stroll through the gardens at their home, Windrush. The family began donating the property to the LSU System in 1966 to create a place that would foster agricultural and horticultural research, provide a destination for generations to appreciate and learn about Louisiana’s rich rural and cultural heritage and give people a place to experience the beauty of the natural world. Their generous gift has made Burden Museum & Gardens a reality.
Burden Museum & Gardens offers discovery and adventure through historic, natural and educational experiences that provide a window into Louisiana’s rich cultural past.
