A Walk Around The Plaza Mayor, Madrid
The Plaza Mayor (English Main Square) was built during Philip III's reign (1598–1621) and is a central plaza in the city of Madrid, Spain. It is located only a few Spanish blocks away from another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol. The Plaza Mayor is rectangular in shape, measuring (423 ft × 308 ft), and is surrounded by three-story residential buildings having 237 balconies facing the Plaza. It has a total of nine entrance ways. The Casa de la Panadería (Bakery House), serving municipal and cultural functions, dominates the Plaza Mayor.
The origins of the Plaza go back to 1577 when Philip II asked Juan de Herrera, a renowned Classical architect, to discuss a plan to remodel the busy and chaotic area of the old Plaza del Arrabal. Juan de Herrera was the artist who designed the first project in 1560 to remodel the old Plaza del Arrabal but construction did not start until 1617, during Philip III's reign. The king asked Juan Gómez de Mora to continue with the project, and he finished the porticoes in 1619. Nevertheless, the Plaza Mayor as we know it today is the work of the architect Juan de Villanueva who was given the glorious, albeit difficult task of its reconstruction in 1790 after a series of enormous fires. Giambologna's equestrian statue of Philip III dates to 1616, but it was not placed in the centre of the square until 1848.

Madrid is the capital of Spain and puts up some nice christmas lights for the holiday season. We start our evening walk near the Plaza de España and walk South to the centre along the Gran Via.
After the Callao Metro station we head to the walking street Calle de Peciados with many shops and more lights. Soon we are at the Puerto del Sol with a big Christmas tree of lights. We continue to the Plaza Mayor which has some Christmas market.
We stroll around a bit more before ending the walk near the Parroquuia de San Andrés Apostol.

Así es la nueva Gran Vía de Madrid
La misma belleza, idéntico ambiente, pero más espacio para el peatón. En la nueva Gran Vía las aceras ganan una media de 3 metros. Una distancia que da para colocar bancos, terrazas y caminar con menos agobio. El Ayuntamiento ha plantado además perales chinos, ha inslatado farolas led y unos nuevos semáforos con un aire retro muy celebrados por los que ya los han podido ver. En la nueva Gran Vía sereduce el trafico a dos carriles por sentido, uno de ellos reservado al transporte publico.

La Central (Cafetería Literaria)
Es un macrocafé librería. Está situada en una casa palacio de 1.200 m2. La Central de Callao alberga más de 70.000 volúmenes de fondo especializado en filosofía, historia, ciencias sociales y literatura. En las tres plantas del edificio también encontramos un café-restaurante (El bistró), situado en la planta baja, y una coctelería (El garito), en el sótano.Tiene mucha variedad y a pesar del gran tamaño sigue teniendo ese aire a librería de siempre.La primera librería La Central se inauguró en marzo de 1996 en la calle de Mallorca, en Barcelona.

We are in Madrid, the capital of Spain on a winter afternoon.
Our tour starts at the Plaza de Jacinto Benavente in the centre. We quickly walk towards the Puerta del Sol which we will visit several times today. Central Madrid is busy with people and shops - also on our way to the Gran Vía.
On the Gran Viá we head east to the Plaza de Jacinto Benavente - the symbolic Gothic palace & fountain and now Madrid's City Hall.
The tour continues walking back on the Gran Vía to Puerta del Sol and into direction of Plaza Mayor. We complete our round walking back to Puerta del Sol on the Calle del Arenal, another shopping street.

Las primeras cargas se han producido en torno a las 20.30 de este sábado, cuando varios centenares de manifestantes han intentado cortar Gran Vía y la Policía Nacional ha intervenido
13 heridos entre policías y manifestantes que pedían la amnistía de los presos políticos en Madrid
La Policía Nacional ha cargando contra varios centenares de manifestantes en Madrid, después que estos hayan tratado de cortar Gran Vía una vez finalizada una marcha de 4.000 personas que este sábado han salido a la calle para pedir la amnistía de todos los presos políticos.
Tras las cargas en la zona de Callao y Gran Vía, los disturbios se han desplazado: unos 20 efectivos de la Policía Nacional han subido por la calle Lavapiés cargando contra manifestantes. Tras ellos iban cuatro efectivos de Samur Protección Civil. A la zona se han trasladado siete furgonetas de la Policía Nacional y una ambulancia de Samur Protección Civil.

Esta tarde un agente del indicativo Puma 70 de la Unidad de Intervención Policial (UIP) del Cuerpo Nacional de Policía ha sido apuñalado por extremistas de izquierdas en la Plaza de Callao de Madrid, cuando él y sus compañeros hacían frente a los disturbios ocasionados por los asistentes a esa convocatoria de apoyo a los golpistas del 1-O. El tuitero @SoyDeDerechas ha publicado un vídeo en el que se ve al agente herido siendo auxiliado por servicios de emergencia:
Según la web PoliciaH50.com, “el agente se encuentra en estado moderado y otro componente del equipo presenta una luxación de hombro“. Deseo una pronta recuperación a los agentes heridos.
+ ACTUALIZADO 22:43h: Según informa El Español, han sido tres los agentes de la Policía Nacional heridos esta tarde en Callao: “uno de ellos por un corte en una pierna “potencialmente grave”, otro por fractura en la clavícula y el tercero por un golpe en la cabeza“.
