The state is best known for its rich deposits of silver ore, its colonial architecture and its importance during the revolution. The state shares its name with its capital and chief center of population, the city of Zacatecas, Zacatecas. ( source Wikipedia )
Zacatecas, Mexico
Located in Mexico's northwestern region, the state of Zacatecas was one of the most important mining regions during the colonial era and it played a key role in the Mexican Revolution. In Zacatecas, the state capital, you'll see magnificent architecture of pink quarry stone as you walk along the sloped streets, alleys and through the plazas. Among the notable edifices are the Cathedral, considered one of the best examples of Mexican Baroque architecture, and the Calderon Theater in the downtown area. The UNESCO declared the Historic Center of Zacatecas a World Heritage Site.
You'll also find numerous cultural events in the state capital, such as the Zacatecas Festival and the Zacatecas International Folklore Festival, which features performances by folkloric groups from various countries. For a panoramic view of Zacatecas, we recommend that you take a ride on the suspended cable car, which crosses the city from Cerro de la Bufa to Cerro del Grillo, allowing you to get a bird's-eye view of the beautiful architecture. After that you can visit the Museo de la Toma de Zacatecas and the Eden mine, where you can take a tour on an old mine train.
In other parts of the state you can visit the city of Fresnillo, where nearby you'll find a famous sanctuary and the towns of Guadalupe and Jerez. As for natural attractions, you can go hiking in the Sierra de Organos and the Sierra de Cardos, where you'll see impressive rock formations, making them the ideal spots for rappelling and other adventure sports. During your visit to Zacatecas, don't forget to explore La Quemada, one of the northern region's most important archaeological zones.

La Mina El Eden (The Eden Mine - An Old Silver Mine) in Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico
Zacatecas is off the beaten track, so not many foreigners come here, except for special events. One thing that Zacatecas is famous for is its silver mines. At the height of New Spain, Zacatecas produced 20% of the silver that was shipped back to Spain, creating several wealthy silver barons in the area.
Today, I had the opportunity to visit a silver mine, “La Mina El Eden,” (The Eden Mine). In this post, you’ll see a few photos, ending with a short section with video.
The caps are hygienic protection that each of us donned before putting on a hard hard hat. The hard hats were necessary, not only to protect us from the potential danger of falling rock, but to protect our heads as we walked through the mine.
The ceiling was really low in some places, and I banged my head more often than not. I had to walk bent over for much of the distance, which wasn’t very comfortable.
Being in the mine took up a lot of time, so much so that Fernando and Faviola had to leave. Where they chose to do so was at a junction in the mine, where, believe it or not, they had a night club, as well as a gift shop.
As a way of making life easier for the patrons who wanted to visit the club, they had a small, electrically powered train. So it was decided that I’d take the train out and Fernando and Faviola would go back to El Bufo to get their car. Above is a partial shot of the train after exiting the mine.
An overall shot of the train. From here it’s difficult to get an idea of the scale, but you would have to ride the train with your head bowed, in order to fit in. Or at least, I did, being relatively tall. It was a short ride, noisy, but interesting.
