We visited Labirintus in July 2019.
On a placard down in the Labirintus, one legend says that Dracula died here and his body was buried in this Labyrinth.

DO NOT MISS the Labyrinth ( Labryntus) beneath Buda castle in Budapest. It is a must and you cannot miss it!!! It is awesome for kids of all ages and no appointment is needed. If you go after 6, they turn off all of the lights and you walk through with a lantern, its creepy!!!.
In the 15th century the caves were used as a prison and Vlad the Impaler, or as some like to call him, Dracula, was held here by King Mathias.
Its really hard to find info in regards to the labyrinth because everything states that it is permanently closed, even my concierge advised it has been shut down, BUT... it is open and operating and it is a blast. a 1 minute walk in Buda Castle Labyrinth, Budapest , Hungary
An interesting tourist attraction with a twist of mystery, fear and horror from a dark past. The Labyrinth is situated in the complex of caves and cellars beneath Castle Hill and the accessible part is about a kilometre long with a small segment of it cleverly staged to play with your senses.
HOW TO REACH THE CASTLE HILL IN BUDAPEST -- True Guide Budapest
The Buda Castle is located on top of the Castle Hill on the Buda side of the river Danube. Despite its elevated location, it very easy to access.
In this video, I show you 3 traditional methods (walking, taking bus #16, taking the funicular), 2 lazy methods (taking one of the lifts or an escalator) and 1 touristy method.
I. Traditional methods:
(1) walking
- steep hill walk starting from the left side of the funicular in Clark Adam ter
- stairs from the other side of the tunnel
- taking a tram to Batthyanyi ter, walking through the square by the left side of the market, little Paris square, hidden staircase and lift by the side of the Hilton
(2) take bus #16, 3 stops and you're there
(3) Funicular / Cable car (we call it Sikló that stands for water snake), be prepared for long queues
II. Lazy methods:
(1) Take one of the lifts

This is a short video taken inside the labyrinth of Buda Castle. It is of course very dark, and in one section very foggy, so the video is not of the best quality. The music was not added by me, rather it was playing at the time. The opera is a piece by Verdi I think, and I have no idea about the other.
This is a great attraction. I went twice in one day. The video was taken on the first trip, and I went back later. I went back because if you go at 6PM they shut off (most) of the lights, and all you have is a kerosene lantern they give you. A very cool experience.
The Dracula signs are there because Vlad Tepes (as in, Dracula) was kept captive here for ten years.

Labyrinth of Buda Castle (Budavari Labirintus)
The internationally unique calcareous tufa caves of Castle Hill were created as an effect of the hot water springs almost half a million years ago. Later the small caves were connected to each other and also to the cellarage of the houses of the Castle District for economic and military purposes, and the complex thus developed into a veritable labyrinth under the Castle Hill. In the 1930s, as part of the war-time defense program, the complex of cellars was converted into a shelter large enough to accommodate as many as ten thousand people at a time.Disfigured with concrete, it served as a secret military object during the Cold War.
When the Labyrinth of Buda Castle opened in 1983 the first and biggest Hungarian historical wax museum was set up here. During the reconstruction works, which took place in 1996/97, the almost 10000 square meters long Labyrinth regained its pre-war look as much as it was possible. The previous exhibition of wax figures gave place to such symbolic and mysterious exhibitions with deeper meaning, whose essence can be characterised by the word 'labyrinth'. In this sense the Labyrinth of Buda Castle not only a simple maze, but a web of paths leading to our history, world and ourselves.

We were exploring the Buda Labyrinth that has a colorful history. It's also known as the Labyrinth of Dracula because Vlad Tepes, better known as Vlad the Impaler, was captured here in the 15th century. This cave system had a very eerie atmosphere. Press release about the disturbing events and their background
On 29 July 2011 the police and members of the Inspectorate for the Environment stormed the Labyrinth of Buda Castle. Large numbers of Hungarian and foreign tourists were simply forced to leave the system of cellars. Foreign tourists were at a loss to understand the reasons of the raid and many believed there had been an attempted or actual terror attack.
The staff of the Labyrinth were equally shocked. They were ordered to gather their belongings immediately, during which time they prohibited from going anywhere without surveillance, and our female staff were not even allowed to lock the toilet door.
The headquarters and the offices of the Labyrinth of Buda Castle were force-evacuated with immediate effect, preventing in a premeditated way the Company from doing its business, building its defence in various court proceedings and even from being available. Why?
What could possibly have led to the type of police action reminiscent of the bleakest periods of Hungarian history? The Labyrinth of Buda Castle is not a terrorist hub or a drug den, but a cultural attraction, classified as one of the Seven Underground Wonders of the World.
Various individuals and organisations have since 2002 sought to snatch the rights to the area and, in actions including the recent raid, to nationalise or usurp it in a way that the Company operating the system of cellars should not have to be compensated for the thirty years of technical, intellectual, tourism and marketing investments it has put into the Labyrinth, and worse, to discredit the Company in every possible way.
After many illegal acquisition attempts were foiled in court, yet another unwarranted, forceful police action took place in 2008 on the premises of the Labyrinth. All accusations were denied and the brutal and illegal actions condemned in all proceedings and on every level of court, and the Company won the case.
The recent attack differs from the 2008 raid in that this time the interested circles are seeking to establish an irreversible situation (through judicial vacations, depriving the Company of its own offices, etc.). The director of the Middle-Danube-Valley Inspectorate for
Environmental Protection lied without batting an eyelid to the cameras, as he did in press releases published in several electronic or printed media. Cited as conclusive evidence, the fact that the Supreme Court rejected the submissions of the Company is simply not true. Most of the director's statements were false or unjustified, merely serving to legitimise the atrocities that provoked a public outcry. Moreover, the Inspectorate never submitted to the appellate body the petition for the suspension of execution.
In 2008 it was the lack of a tourism permission, this time it is the lack of a land use permit and damage to the environment that is being referred to. The fact that we are looking at pretexts for nationalisation is confirmed by the fact that the exhibitions of the Labyrinth of Buda Castle -- built over the past 30 years and unchanged since -- have been known to the Inspectorate for decades and it has never raised any objection. They have had the chance to do so for long, but never did. Until now.
