South Texas Refuge Complex
Situated along the southernmost stretch of the Rio Grande, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is one of the top birding destinations in the world and home to half of all butterfly species found in North America. In the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, situated along the Gulf of Mexico, thorn forest intermingles with freshwater wetlands, coastal prairies, mudflats, and beaches. The largest population of ocelots in the United States call this refuge home, making it a center for conservation and recovery efforts for this endangered cat. And in the nearby Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, four climates converge, producing one of the most biologically diverse regions in North America. In addition to providing habitat for an amazing array of species, these refuges enrich their surrounding communities by hosting nature festivals, forming conservation partnerships with local organizations, offering meaningful volunteer opportunities, and providing interactive educational programs for youth.

SUMMARY
=======
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is the largest protected area of natural habitat left in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The 98,000-acre (400 km2) refuge is located almost entirely in Cameron County, Texas (near Harlingen), although a very small part of its northernmost point extends into southern Willacy County. The Peregrine Fund began reintroducing captive-bred northern aplomado falcons (Falco femoralis septentrionalis) to the refuge in 1985, which had been nearly extirpated from the Southwestern United States; today, it is home to 40 pairs. Nine other endangered or threatened species inhabit the refuge, such as the Texas ocelot (Leopardus pardalis albescens) and Gulf Coast jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi cacomitli), rare wild cats. Programs at the refuge include vegetation and wetland restoration.

Go Hunting at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge ... With Your Camera
- Every time I get down to the Low Country I try and make a stop and drive-thru The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. It’s home to a large variety of wildlife including ducks, geese, wading birds, shore birds and several threatened or endangered species as well including the American alligator, flatwoods salamander, bald eagle, wood stork, shortnose sturgeon and Florida manatee. The Refuge also provided nesting areas for wood ducks, great horned owls, osprey and swallow-tailed kites. What you’ll see when you visit depends upon the season.
There are several trails available for hiking that run anywhere from just under a mile to over 6 miles round trip. My favorite is Wildlife Drive which is a lazy 4 mile drive through the refuge. There are many opportunities to pull over and park and then walk around the different areas.
Every time I visit this wonderful place I see it differently but each time I come away refreshed. It is absolutely worth visiting the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. In fact I’d recommend you visit at least once in each of the seasons. You won’t be disappointed. #familytravel

Proposed Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge
The Friends of Hackmatack is a grassroots organization of local citizens in
Wisconsin and Illinois who believe that the rolling glacial hills, ancient
oak groves, diverse wetlands and abundant wildlife of the bi-state area is
a national treasure worth preserving for future generations. Our dream is
to see a National Wildlife Refuge established that stretches not only
across state lines, but across the generations. We believe the refuge will
bring not only tourism, jobs and new economic opportunity to our region,
but also provide new educational and recreational opportunities to the
citizens of both states.

First Person Birder: Winter Whooping Cranes
Took some folks down to the coast to see some Whooping Cranes, among other things. We took the boat tour out of Fulton Harbor aboard the Skimmer, a very reliable way to see Whooping Cranes. We managed to find 39 on this trip, and 50 other species as well.

A quick video of egrets feeding at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville Florida on the morning of January 10, 2013. We took the Black Point Wildlife Drive and came across this little pond where egrets, blue heron, and ibis were feeding on fish.
It was a beautiful early morning blessing.
