STORYLINE
BEIJING GEARS UP FOR NEW YEAR
Beijing residents were putting the finishing touches on Thursday to preparations for the Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, that starts this weekend.
Dancers and drummers rehearsed their routines in the Gaobeidian cultural village in the eastern part of the capital.
Lion dancers were being put through their paces, while performers of traditional Chinese opera took part in a dress rehearsal.
Beijing''s flower market was packed with people buying decorations for their houses.
Flowers are believed to be a symbol of good fortune, particularly the plum flower.
During the festivities people also use firecrackers and red decorations to chase away evil spirits and bad fortune.
More than one hundred different events will be held in Beijing during the festival, which begins with the lunar new year celebrations on February 14, and continues for fifteen days.
Each year is named after one traditional animal of the 12 year Chinese zodiac cycle.
This year the Chinese New Year falls on the year of the Tiger.

Ambulances were seen rushing to and leaving the scene of the blaze but there were not immediate reports of casualties.
Clouds of smoke rose from the smoldering structure two hours after the fire was extinguished.
According to a firefighter at the site, the blaze was believed to have begun in the kitchen of bar connected to the flower market.

Hong Kong (China) Travel - Unusual Markets
Take a tour of Hong Kong's flower and bird markets.
We are amazed at the amount of different flowers that they have here, many that we do not see in the United States, and some that we consider weeds and they are selling as flowers. It is just beautiful. You can ignite your senses in this flower market which has exotic flowers from all over the world. We have a plethora of flowers in this flower market. Over here we have chrysanthemum, baby roses, beautiful calla lilies, and over here we have some sunflowers.
One of the more unique markets is the Bird Market, where you can find vendors selling all types of birds. Some of the common breeds include parakeets, canaries and talking parrots in addition to more exotic birds found only in Asia. They also sell live grasshoppers as bird food. This is Rosanna Wilcox, showing you Hong Kong.
