Athens riviera trekking: hiking excursion Parnitha forest, Attica - Greece | Πεζοπορία στην Πάρνηθα
Trekking excursion to Mont Parnes, Athens.
Mount Parnitha, pronounced [ˈparniθa], Parnis/Parnes; is a densely forested mountain range north of Athens, the highest on the peninsula of Attica, with an elevation of 1,413 m, and a summit known as Karavola. Much of the mountain is designated a national park, and is a protected habitat for wildfowl, first created in 1961. The name of the mountain dates back to ancient times, when it was under the ancient demes of Acharnae and Decelea.
Forests of Aleppo Pine cover all slopes beneath 1,000 m altitude, and are often threatened by forest fires, such as occurred in 2005 and 2007. Above 1,000 m it is covered principally in Greek Fir, grasses and shrubbery. About 1,000 species of plants can be found on the mountain, including crocus and tulips, and the mountain also provides a native habitat to its red deer (Cervus elaphus), which were known in ancient times.
Parnitha has many places with archaeological interest. Most usual ancient buildings in Parnitha are the fortresses. In antiquity, many fortresses had been built on the mountain, for the Athenian defense opposite the Boeotians and others enemys from the north, such as the Phyle fortress, built at a height of 687 meters in the west of Parnitha. Other notable fortresses are the Panakton, in the area of Dervenochoria and Eleutherae fortress near Mount Cithaeron. Notable monument of later periods is the Monastery of Kleiston. It is a Byzantine monastery dated from 13th century. It is mentioned by Pope Innocent IV in 1209 with the name Monastery of Kyras. Southeast of Parnitha, inside a dense forest, Tatoi Palace is located. It was the palace of Greek royal family and it was built in 19th century. Today it is abandoned.
Parnitha has also natural monuments. The cave of Panas is located on the west slopes of the mountain at a height of 750 meters. It was worship site in antiquity. Near the cave there is the steep gorge of Gouras and the gorge of Keladonas river. Beautiful site of the mountain is Beletsi Lake. It is located on the east slopes of the mountain, near Afidnes and it is important place for migratory birds.
Just one hour away from the center of Athens, to the beautiful and unknown for many, mount Parnitha you can go and breathe fresh air, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a break from the daily routine. You may walk, run, play or take photos. You can also stop off at the shelter named “Mpafi” to relax and enjoy your morning coffee, a meal or just the wonderful view. It is located in the heart of the mountain. It is an organized and appropriate place to accept visitors of every age who can take the opportunity to unwind in nature and discover the unique fir forest of Attica across the National Park of mount Parnes.
Parnitha is the highest mountain of Attica and is covered with one of the densest forests in Greece. Its forests are dominated by the fir tree Abies Cephalonica, – the Cephalonian fir that grows at an altitude of over 800-900 m., – while its northern and southwestern slopes are extensively covered with forests of pine trees. Up on the mountain you will frequently find hollies, oaks, strawberry trees and cedars (Juniperus oxycedrus), while at more rich with groundwater grounds you will find Osrtya carpinifolia, planes, poplars (Populus alba), etc.
In the last thirty years many black pine trees (Pinus nigra), acacias, as well as some cedars of Lebanon and lindens have been planted in the regions where the fir trees grow. Of course, there are innumerable heaths (Mediterranean maquis), which cover large areas of land mainly at the northern side of the mountain.
Mt. Parnitha is the closest mountain to Athens, and the only National Park in Europe so close to a capital (40km). The National Park of Parnitha is a natural wonder, with 42 mammal species living in it, among them deer, foxes and many kinds of birds. There are numerous hiking trails in the mountain of varying difficulty, suitable for every hiker. If you are visiting Athens, don’t miss out this wonderful outdoors opportunity. Choose one of the three routes described below and discover the hidden side of Athens!
Highlights:
Hike in the closest to a European capital, National Park
Choose between a variety of well-planned trekking routes, for all levels of hikers
Enjoy a healthy Mediterranean meal in Bafi shelter

Known as Limanakia, or 'small ports', these little coves with rocky beaches and blue-green waters are particularly popular among Athenians.Ideal for relaxation and diving, the rough-hewn Limanakia are a favourite destination of the young, nudists and scuba-divers.
It is called Lake Vouliagmeni and it is a mineral spa that is reported to have many healing properties for such ailments as eczema and dermatological diseases, neuralgia, headaches, disfiguring arthritis, chronic gynecological diseases, lumbago, sciatica and other problems. It was also a mysterious place because popular urban mythology said that some American scuba divers from the US Airbase nearby, disappeared while exploring the undersea caves that fed the lake in the late sixties. Then a couple years ago their bodies were discovered, more than 35 years later!
