LCMM Lake Adventure Camps in Burlington & Vergennes
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum announces the launch of an exciting new series of lake adventure summer camps in Burlington, Vermont in partnership with Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront.
These week-long day camps will provide students ages 4 to 16 years old with unique summer adventures that combine regional history, traditional maritime skills, native and colonial life, nautical research, lake ecology, music, and shipwreck discovery.
“These on-water and underwater discovery experiences go deeper than amusement” said LCMM Executive Director Mike Smiles, “they are designed to inspire a new generation of adventure historians, scientists, and stewards of Lake Champlain.”
Online Registration now open: lcmm.org.
Lake Champlain First Navigators- Birch Bark Canoe
In Summer 2007, Aaron York, a member of the Abenaki Nation, completed an 18-foot birch bark canoe as an artist in residence at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, VT. York fashioned the canoe body from a single sheet of birch bark, using a cedar frame and spruce root stitching. Members of the El-nu Abenaki Tribe and Woodland Confederacy held a ceremonial launching of the canoe in early August of 2007. The canoe is a replica of the type used by Samuel de Champlain in his exploration of the Lake in 1609. The canoe project received research support from Professor Frederick M. Wiseman of Johnson State College and the Wôbanakik Heritage Center.

Tugboat U.S. La Vallee, Underwater Historic Preserve
Vermont Underwater Historic Preserves
All underwater historic sites in Lake Champlain belong in public trust to the people of the respective states in whose water they lie. The Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve provides public access for divers to some of the Lake's historic shipwrecks. The system is designed to protect these irreplaceable historic resources both from anchor damage and artifact collecting. With the cooperation of the recreational diving community these wrecks will be available for generations of divers to enjoy.
Lake Champlain's Historic Preserve system works and succeeds only with your cooperation. The protection of historic shipwrecks and safety of other divers is your responsibility.
Divers who witness violations of the preserve diving guidelines are asked to voluntarily report them to the Vermont State Police Marine Division (802) 655-3435 and the New York State Police (518) 962-8235.
Access to the sites in the Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve is free of charge, but divers must register annually prior to using the Preserve System. Divers are no longer required to register for sensitive shipwreck sites; one annual registration is adequate.
Please visit lcmm.org for more information and to register to dive.

LCMM Insider Ep. 8, Lois McClure Haul-Out, Part II
On Monday, August 24, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s schooner Lois McClure left her home port on a very important mission – getting ship-shape in anticipation of her twelfth year of operation. Her destination was the New York State Canal Corporation shipyard at Waterford, New York, where a team of shipwrights working with David Short of North Atlantic Shipbuilding and Repair, of West Montville, ME are now working to replace any worn, damaged or rotted planking and timbers and recaulk seams.
“We’re especially grateful to the McClure family and to the many donors, volunteers, and friends of the schooner who made her first decade so successful, and whose enlightened support provides for the maintenance essential to her continued operation,” said Michael Smiles, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum.
“Schooner Lois McClure has been the most effective outreach program LCMM has ever conducted, and a leader in the world of Maritime Museums. The schooner will be in highly qualified hands for this essential maintenance work, and we are already looking forward to her 2016 season.”
