Abandoned Ray Dowell Farm (Wauconda, Illinois Part I)
Hey everyone! In the countryside of Wauconda, Illinois, there is a rural road that winds through fields and forests. The road is called West Bonner Road. Tucked away in the middle of nowhere, there stands a mysterious run-down house. The house is was once an old farmhouse and is surrounded by a dense forest now. Judging by the looks of it, it has been abandoned for many years. Mother Nature is trying to reclaim this house. I have passed by this house every summer since 2012, and each year, the house just gets more and more decayed and overgrown. However, it is still intact. I no absolutely nothing about this house, unfortunately.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: I do now no something about this house and property! The land was owned by the Dowell Brothers in the 1920's and the house was built around 1921. Here is some info.
The farm buildings have been razed following the farm's sale to Golden Oaks around 1960. All of the land is crop farmed as part of the very large dairy operation of Golden Oaks Farms. This farm has land on both the N. and S. sides of Bonner Road. As a historical note: Three Dowell brothers, Bert, Ray and Joe, bought adjoining farms here ca 1921. Joe's farm is privately held and farmed by Edwards at this time. This house is located at 27500 West Bonner Road, Wauconda, IL.

If anyone knows about this house, please comment! It is a white house with peeling paint and boarded up windows. There are two other buildings on the property. They include a shed, barely visible from the road, and a small chicken coop towards the back of the property. It has an attached garage also, which is strange for a house that old. Most likely, the garage was added on. In this video, I have included some footage that I took from the summers of 2012, 2013, and 2014. The footage shows the small changes over the years. Also, I have included aerial and street views from Google and Bing Maps from 2009 views and 2012 and 2013 views. In this video, there are also some photos from the summer of 2013. If they tell you their location requirements, and you think you can provide them, set up a step-by-step program of meeting their needs. Keep the company informed of how you’re doing. If it takes six months, fine. Just keep up the communication. It's really that simple. And uncommon.

There's another useful analogy from everyday life. If you've ever been in sales, you know that sometimes you can't sell to your prospect. But if you get to know that prospect, they might refer you to a more likely buyer. Referrals can and do happen in business relocation or start-up as well.
Maybe we can talk you out of business attraction entirely. By now you know that we think entrepreneurship is the best possible economic development strategy.
When you support a locally owned business and help it improve and expand, you not only generate jobs but you also generate a return on investment that has a high likelihood of being spent to some extent within the community. This is why from a community development perspective, locally owned businesses generally are better for the community than chains.
Like all community development principles, there may be exceptions. One example may be in tourism-oriented communities, where the chains may generate more sales than locally-owned competitors simply because tourists tend to choose the familiar over the unfamiliar. So introducing one mom and pop operation into an arena of already fierce competition between national brands of chains may not be as successful as you hoped.
