Doxa Lake is located in the widest area of Feneos in Corinth, Greece. The environment is totally unique as the landscape is surrounded by the mountains of Chelmos. In winter, when the falling yellow leaves from the trees reach the ground, the colors of the water combined with the blue sky above, moves any traveller to a unique environment.
In the center of the lake, many years ago was the Monastery of Saint George but due to constant waters coming from the surrounding mountains, the Monastery was gradually sunk to the depths of the newly created lake. The monks then decided to build a new monastery in the mountainside near the lake, where Saint George Monastery is located now. Oaks and pine trees complete this amazing and truly magnificent landscape.

Η λίμνη Δόξα είναι μία τεχνητή λίμνη σε υψόμετρο 900 μέτρων, η οποία βρίσκεται στην Φενεό Κορινθίας. Η κατασκευή της ολοκληρώθηκε στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1990, και στηρίχτηκε στον χείμαρρο Δόξα που ρέει σε εκείνη την περιοχή. Κατά το παρελθόν η λίμνη έχει πλημμυρίσει αρκετές φορές καλύπτοντας όλο τον ευρύτερο κάμπο της Φενεού και καταστρέφοντας τις καλλιέργειες των τότε κατοίκων της περιοχής. Στο κέντρο της λίμνης υπάρχει το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Φανουρίου. Παλαιότερα υπήρχε εκεί η Μονή Αγίου Γεωργίου αλλά λόγω των πλημμυρών μεταφέρθηκε σε μικρή απόσταση από την αρχική της θέση, σε διπλανό ύψωμα. Πολύ κοντά στην λίμνη βρίσκεται το χωριό Γκούρα.

Μετά αφού θα έχετε πεινάσει και είναι ώρα για το γυρισμό σας περάστε από την παραδοσιακή ταβέρνα Τριαντάφυλλος που βρίσκεται στη Στυμφαλία για να φατε πολύ καλό φαγητό και όλα από τα χεράκια τους

We visited the artificial lake Doxa of Peloponnese, among high mountains at an elevation of 900 meters above sea level, 3hrs driving from Athens.
There we met Hercules, a therapist who sells products made out of beeswax for several uses and produces them by himself (check it out at 4:17 min).
We had late lunch in a very beautiful taverna at the bank of the lake choosing veggie dishes made from local products (check it out at 7:35 min).
We also did some horse riding in the forest. Overall it was an unforgetable experience (check it out at 8:50 min).
On our way back we passed from Stymfalia lake which is known from Stymphalian birds labor of Hercules (check it out at 9:30 min).

Reflecting on nature’s beauty: Lake Doxa in upland Corinth
It’s been an unusually cold and wet Winter in Greece, so when our mountaineering friend Eliza suggested taking a day trip one sunny Sunday to upland Corinth, in the Peloponnese, we jumped at the chance.
Our destination was Lake Doxa, situated in Feneos, and it would take a good three hours to drive the 189-kilometre route from Athens.
Though the toll booths are many, the drive along the Olympia Odos highway is a breeze. The turn-off at the town of Derveni leads to a two-lane road that snakes its way through peaks and valleys, with views of Mount Ziria, the second highest mountain in the Peloponnese.
It’s an enjoyable route through pine and fir forests and, in Winter, you’re not likely to encounter too many fellow travellers. In fact, the road was pretty much empty most of the way.
At various points of the journey, snowfall reached right down to the road’s edge and it was obvious that the local authorities regularly sent snow ploughs to keep the asphalt clear.
Soon enough, the mountain’s tallest peak – Great Ziria, at 2376 metres, appeared up ahead, covered in a generous dusting of snow and we make a pit stop to witness its grandeur.
Following signs, some of them more faded than others, we reached a dirt road that was a little muddy in parts but easy enough to navigate. Creeks flowed through leafless trees and snow melt trickled down hillsides onto the roadway, following its natural path.
Lake Doxa, a muted shamrock hue in the early afternoon, appeared out of nowhere. We made our first stop at a grassy patch and absorbed our first view of the small picturesque lake which sits at 900 metres above sea level. You would never guess that it’s artificial, created in the 90s to irrigate the area.
From there, we could see the tiny Agios Fanourios chapel which, from there, looked as if it was situated on a tiny islet not far from the lake’s edge.
A circular road surrounding the lake leads to the chapel, which we found is actually built on a minuscule peninsula. Our visit coincided with that of a tour bus carrying chatty pensioners from Athens. They filed one by one into the church which can barely hold 10 people, leaning into its narrow, low doorway and taking turns to light a candle and kiss icons.
The nearby fertile plains of Ancient Feneos are renowned for their fine pulses. Local producers set up stalls on the weekend at the peninsula, where visitors can peruse the varieties on offer, which include split yellow pea and lentil.
A sole organic farmer had a substantial array of packaged beans spread out on a table, including gigantes, a large white bean used to make richly-flavoured oven-baked gigantes plaki. It’s hard to find good gigantes that become tender with cooking, so we snapped them up, knowing they would be leagues ahead of those we see at the supermarket in Athens.
The farmer provided directions on how to prepare this Winter warmer, soul food Greek-style, whose ingredients are tomato, onions, garlic, parsley and plenty of olive oil, of course.
One honey producer, who wasn’t pushing the hard sell unlike some of her colleagues, expertly swiveled three different varieties of the nectar on toothpicks and proffered them to us to sample. We departed carrying bags heaving with pulses, a generous jar of thick fir honey and thick slices of yellow graviera cheese and a delicate hard white cheese known as mizithra that is normally grated and drizzled over Greek pasta.
A few hundred metres from the peninsula is another grassy lakeside lookout point, which we had completely to ourselves. Standing amid towering black pines, we gazed out over the lake, which had turned a dreamy shade of emerald by the late afternoon.
Before us stood a majestic sight – a snow-capped mountain whose image was reflected amid reeds in the still waters of the lake. The only sound was that of birds chirping invisibly in the treetops.
It was time to move on though, as it was a day trip and stomachs were rumbling. Driving past the plains of Ancient Feneos, which was once a lake, we reached a stone-built roadside taverna. There, we tucked into the day’s special – tender braised veal, along with wild greens, scooping up a spicy feta cheese dip with crisp village bread.
Consulting our kindly waitress for the best route home, she advised of an alternative route to that on the map, avoiding a weather-damaged bridge.
Our lungs freshened with mountain air, minds graced with images of alpine beauty and stomachs filled with home-style upland Corinth cuisine, we made the trip home and promised to return to this soothing corner of the Peloponnese very soon.

Σε 167 χιλιόμετρα από το κέντρο της Αθήνας, με κατεύθυνση δυτικά προς την Ορεινή Κορινθία (από τον δρόμο που περνάει από Ξυλόκαστρο και Τρίκαλα Κορινθίας), βρίσκεται η τεχνητή λίμνη Δόξα, δίπλα στο χωριό Φενεός.
Η λίμνη βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 900 μέτρων και κατασκευή της ολοκληρώθηκε στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1990. Κατά το παρελθόν η λίμνη έχει πλημμυρίσει αρκετές φορές καλύπτοντας όλο τον ευρύτερο κάμπο της Φενεού. Πάνω από τη λίμνη υψώνεται σχετικά απότομα ο όγκος της Ντουρντουβάνας με υψόμετρο 2.109 μ. Από τη λίμνη ξεκινάει κι ένας χωματόδρομος που μέσω ενός πανέμορφου δάσους μας οδηγεί στη Ζαρούχλα του Ν. Αχαΐας.

Παρόλο που η λίμνη είναι τεχνητή, κατασκευασμένη το 1998, έχει ενσωματωθεί απόλυτα στο περιβάλλον, αφού λέγεται ότι υπήρχε ένας εδώ στην αρχαιότητα. Ο θρύλος λέει ότι εκεί είναι όπου ο Ηρακλής στεγνώσει μια λίμνη.
Η λίμνη Doxa είναι ένας αγαπημένος και γνωστός προορισμός για σχολικά ταξίδια και μοτοσικλέτες. Υπάρχει επίσης ένας αγωνιστικός ιστιοπλοϊκός με τηλεχειρισμό που διοργανώνεται εδώ.

Lake Doxa is an artificial lake located at Feneo, Korinthias, at 1.100 m above sea level. In the middle of the lake you’ll see the church of Agios Fanourios. In the past there use to be a monastery at the dam of Feneo-Doxa, known as Moni Agiou Georgiou (also known as Palaiomonastiro), which due to flooding it was moved to a nearby hill. Although the lake is artificial, made in 1998, it has perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment since it is said that there used to be one here in antiquity. Legend has it that this is where Hercules dried out a lake.
Lake Doxa is a beloved and well known destination for school trips and motorbiking. There is also a remote control sailboat racing organised here.
The landscape changes colours at the turn of each season making it all the more captivating. Nestled in between forested mountains it makes an ideal destination for you to relax and take a long walk in nature.
It is a man-made lake, situated at the border of the Municipality of Feneos. After the village Kastania, you will find yourself in the valley of Feneos. After encountering the villages of Mosia and Mesinon, at the road sign for Ancient Feneos you will make a right, and after a few hundred meters you will find yourself in front of the lake. The lake is surrounded by the mountains Zireia, Helmos (Aroania) and Dourdouvana. When snow covers the peaks of the mountains, their reflection in the lake’s surface creates a unique spectacle reminiscent of an alpine landscape. The lake is located at an altitude of 880 m and was built about 15 years ago. Created to address the problem of high tide, which since ancient times would raise the level of water in the region and destroy the crops. According to legend, at the water’s elevating point one can find the gate to Hades. Due to the high tide, the monastery of Agios Georgios was moved in the 17th century and in its place today is the church of Agios Fanourios, literally floating in the lake. You can go cycling and hiking around the lake and in the pine and fir forest that surrounds it. You may see water bikes or guided diving teams who dive to admire the ruins of the old iconostasis of the monastery.

The breathtaking journey after a full circle of the lake continues up to Saint George of Feneos Orthodox Monastery, a monastery that was build in 1693 and then rebuild in 1754 because the initial building was destroyed by a fire.

Η λίμνη Δόξα (και όχι Δόξας) είναι μία μικρή και γραφική τεχνητή λίμνη σε υψόμετρο περίπου 900 μ. και με περίμετρο περίπου 5 χλμ. Δημιουργήθηκε το 1996 με την κατασκευή μικρού φράγματος. Σε περιόδους αργιών, εορτών κλπ. μαζεύει πολύ κόσμο. Στο κέντρο της λίμνης Δόξα υπάρχει μία στενή χερσόνησος, στην άκρη της οποίας θα βρούμε το μικρό εκκλησάκι του Αγ. Φανουρίου. Τη λίμνη τροφοδοτεί με νερό ο χείμαρρος Δόξας. Πάνω από τη λίμνη υψώνεται σχετικά απότομα ο όγκος της Ντουρντουβάνας με υψόμετρο 2.109 μ. Από τη λίμνη ξεκινάει κι ένας χωματόδρομος βατός το καλοκαίρι αλλά αδιάβατος όταν έχει χιόνια, μπαίνει σε πανέμορφο δάσος και καταλήγει στη Ζαρούχλα του Ν. Αχαΐας.
Περίπου 1 χλμ. πάνω από τη λίμνη θα βρούμε πανεύκολα το δρόμο για το ιστορικό μοναστήρι του Αγ. Γεωργίου Φενεού. Περιβάλλεται από πανέμορφη φύση (μικτό δάσος από έλατα, πεύκα και βελανιδιές) και το αρχονταρίκι του προσφέρει απίστευτη θέα στη λίμνη Δόξα. Οι πάντοτε φιλόξενοι και προσηνείς μοναχοί του θα μας κεράσουν καφεδάκι και γλυκό του κουταλιού τριαντάφυλλο.
