Even though the official Lao New Year is April 14th-16th, Lao folks in the United States celebrate the entire month of April and sometimes into the month of May as well! May 3rd through May 5th was the bigger of the two celebrations in Fort Smith, Arkansas!

This Is Arkansas: Into The Outdoors
The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center is one of the more special places around the Fort Smith area and a truly splendid place in which to spend a day. A good place for all ages, The Western Arkansas Education Service Cooperative hosted a special day on Tuesday, October the 1st (2013) in which the Fort Smith, Paris, Waldron, and Booneville school districts took part in. This Is Arkansas was very pleased to have been invited to come along to film and produce the event and we strongly suspect that our production crew had just as much fun as any of the students participating did...perhaps even more so in some instances . The educational focus of the day was entitled Into The Outdoors and it was designed to educate both teachers and students alike in regards to the outdoor classroom educational model. Designed and planned by Dr. Curtis Varnell of the Western Arkansas Educational Service Cooperative, the day was funded by a grant from The Humanities Council and turned out to be both a very enjoyable day for all involved and a major success all the way around. Lessons were provided by Dr. Curtis Varnel, Patrick Millard (Waldron School District), Dr. Bret Stone (University of the Ozarks/Clarksville), and Karen Westcamp-Johnson & Chad Lowe (The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center). A wide variety of lessons were taught throughout the course of the day that included canoeing & kayaking education, archery education, Newton's Principles (mass, gravity, trajectory...), tree & bird recognition, Native American history & methods, and a guided nature hike -- all of which we've been able to capture and share in this special This Is Arkansas production. Here is an educational model that all classes, schools, and districts need to see and in which all teachers and students should be allowed the joy and benefit of experiencing.

There are people out there in government and those who feel their safety & or privacy is being violated by people like myself who want nothing more than to share the view from the air. Several states have passed laws against flying UAVs. Some have passed laws against UAVs having cameras on them for fear someone other than government is going to see through a window or see them in their back yard having a BBQ.
Most of these like I fly have a wide angle lens that captures a wide area but can't recognize a person from a few yards away. It can't see through glass in the daytime and I don't fly at night.
I am a pilot and I am aware that everything 500 ft AGL belongs to the FAA. I wouldn't be able to see my little copter more than 200-300 feet up anyway. I do make and fly rockets however and some of them reach 3000' up and as long as you aren't in the city limits or near an airport they don't care about my rockets.
Some regulations are completely ludicrous and I figure there's more crazy to come. I am also aware that where we have a freedom there's always going to be someone abuse it. More often however there are corrupt greedy people in government who know they make money by regulating and outlawing as much as they can. There are also paranoid people who image the worst when there's nothing to fear.
I could climb on my roof and shoot video with a much better camera and actually identify people several houses away and no one would think anything about it. Put a tiny camera on a UAV fly it high enough to see over the privacy fence and OMG! You might see the neighbor's dog in their back yard.
One guy owned a winery and shot video of his vineyard posted it on YouTube they found it and he got busted. How's that hurting anyone if someone shot video of their grapes out in a field away from everyone else? The answer is it isn't hurting anyone. It violates one law as the FAA sees it. If you are making money from something that might be construed as advertising from an aerial vehicle with a camera then it's considered a commercial endeavor and falls under regulations regarding such things.
We think if we are being paid for a service that makes us a professional so if we fly our copter over someone's roof to view the roofing and we don't get paid think again. Because if you give that video to the owner or a roofer and they use that as reason to replace the roof then the one who shot the video is acting in a commercial endeavor, which is illegal if you don't have the right license. Remember FAA is Federal! Which is nation wide so it doesn't make any difference if your state says it's Ok or not.
One professional who works in the movie business was shooting production videos from his UAV. He was shut down by the state of CA for using his UAV as a camera platform for professional use. The man is a skilled pilot. Now his more than $20,000 worth of UAV cameras and equipment are in the hanger for an indefinite time.
Other TV series that I might name have used small UAVs like mine more often the DJi Phantom to shoot video they used in their TV productions. If they haven't been shut down by the FAA yet I'm sure they will be if they get caught.
Others say follow safe guide lines. Don't fly near houses or vehicles. Don't fly near buildings or other structures. Don't fly near people, etc and so on. Don't fly at the beach if there's anyone else there. Yeah right. Where are most of us going to fly? The majority of the videos on YouTube are flying in cities around houses or in parks around people. The majority of the people enjoy watching the little flying things, but that makes no difference to those who want to regulate or shut us down.
Here's the safety catch. These things can go out of control or fail and fall. They might hit someone, a house or vehicle and damage it. The person flying it is responsible for any damage to persons or property done by their UAV. This is why it's always wise to use good sense and not put anyone or their property in danger. Which is why most of the time I fly in sparsely populated places and not directly over people if I can help it. Mine has never fallen and the times it's gone strange on me I've always managed to bring it back safely.
Most of my flights are in my own back yard and sometimes I go a few yards above the treetops for a few seconds but that's about it. Yes I have video of other people's homes and back yards and I could care less whats in them or what they are doing. Only interested in the view from the air which is something only pilots get to see for a few seconds when they fly over.
I'm just saying there are people trolling the YouTube looking for anything they can make an issue about to take more of our freedoms away and I may be required to remove this video. If you want to see it or download it you better get it now.

White Rock Mountain Arkansas
White Rock Mountain is one of the tallest mountains of the Boston Mountains which made up the Ozarks in Arkansas. Travelers can see the Boston Mountains along Interstate 540 between Fort Smith and Fayetteville, Arkansas. To get to White Rock Mountain from Fort Smith, take Interstate 540 North then merge onto Interstate 40 East. Travel on Interstate 40 East until you see exit 24-Mulberry, take the exit. Turn left into North 125 and go about 6 miles, you will see a small community named Fern. There is a 3-way, which both directions can also take you to White Rock Mountain.
The way on the right is easier to get there, but this road was closed before due to bad condition, so you must know the other way as well. The way on the right, keep going straight until you see another 3-way, turn left where it says Shores Lake. You will run into gravel road soon. Go about 3-4 mile until you hit another 3-way. Turn left towards White Rock Mountain. From there will be easy.
The way on the left at Fern. There will be a lot of gravel road on this one. Keep going straight until you hit a paved road, turn right at that road. Then you will run onto gravel road again. Keep going even the road seems to get smaller. then you will hit another 3-way (I don't remember there is a stop sign), turn right again. Now to steep hill gravel road. Do not drive too fast because your tires will not have friction on the road if you step on the brake, and you might end up on the side of the road or down the ditch. From there just going straight.
There is another way from Mountainburg, Arkansas. But I never took that route before, so I don't know the direction. But I see sign says Mountainburg when heading out of White Rock Mountain, and met some people who took that way down from Fayetteville.
Overall, it is a beautiful place to visit, especially during the Fall. Ozark Highland trail is one of the longest trails in Arkansas. One more reason that it is best to visit during the Fall is that bears are not so active during the Fall. Trust me I once saw a bear crossing the road while I was driving up there during early summer.
Enjoy the beauties of White Rock Mountain. But always remember to be careful all the time. I also had to help a husband carry out his wife because she had a broken ankle. I do not want to scare you. Just to remind you to be careful. It's not too difficult to hike around, unless you really want to hike down the bottom of the cliff. Yes, there is a trail right bellow the clip that you can hike to a couple of caves. I heard there is a cave with Indians' caving right below the main vista, but I didn't get there yet; maybe another time

I drove on Nebraska Highway 2 from Grand Island to Cairo. Starts with me turning left onto Highway 2 from US Highway 281 with BNSF loaded coal trains stopped there. Ends in Cairo near Nebraska Highway 11.

You can re trace the longest stagecoach route in the history of the world-by driving a portion of it through northwest Arkansas by way of the Butterfield Heritage Trail A gem of a hiking trail that's hardly been publicized until now, is the one that loops around Lake Alma in the town of Alma. A unique mountain biking experience along Crowley's Ridge can be enjoyed at Village Creek State Park north of Forrest City. Hiking and blue ribbon smallmouth bass fishing are offered at the Conservation Education Center along Crooked Creek near Yellville.

Road Trip from Branson Missouri to Harrison Arkansas
On a nice winter day from Branson Missouri to Harrison Arkansas with a little detour over Table Rock Lake Dam.
Started at Branson Landing west over 76 then southwest over 376 and south on 265 + 165/265 to the Dam. Short stop at the boat ramp in Table Rock State Park. Following the road eastbound then over 265 to Hwy 65. Now heading south on 65 to Harrison and leaving 65 to vanish in the city hills ... ;)
