The Olympic Museum | Lake Placid
The Lake Placid Olympic Museum commemorates the 1932 Winter Olympics and 1980 Winter Olympics, which were based in the Olympic village of Lake Placid. It is the only Olympic museum in the United States and is a part of the work of New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority in the Lake Placid Olympic Region. Lake Placid is the only North American city to have hosted two separate Winter Olympics.
The museum, which was opened by New York State in 1994, is located within the Olympic Center. Its collection includes the Fram III bobsled from the 1932 Olympic Games which had been missing for more than sixty years prior to being donated to the museum, the skates used by Jack Shea in the same games, as well as memorabilia from the 1980 Miracle on Ice hockey team. The museum also hosted the Olympic torch when it traveled the United States prior to the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

1932 LAKE PLACID WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES IIIrd OLYMPICS 86554a MD
This historic, silent film shows highlights of the 1932 Winter Olympics, officially known as the III Olympic Winter Games, held in Lake Placid, New York. The games opened on February 4 and closed on February 15. It was the first of four Winter Olympics held in the United States; Lake Placid hosted again in 1980.
The games were awarded to Lake Placid in part by the efforts of Godfrey Dewey, head of the Lake Placid Club and son of Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System. California also had a bid for the 1932 Winter Games. William May Garland, president of the California X Olympiad Association, wanted the games to take place in Wrightwood and Big Pines, California. The world's largest ski jump at the time was constructed in Big Pines for the event, but the games were ultimately awarded to Lake Placid.
The film opens with shots of Lake Placid (:25) before showing then-Governor Roosevelt opening the games at (1:02) and the march of athletes from 17 nations. At (2:15) there is an aerial shot of the Olympic Arena hockey venue. Canada won the Gold and was undefeated in this sport. At (4:06) the 10,000 meter speed skating race is shown, won by American Irving Jaffee in under 20 minutes. The film also shows Kit Klein winning the 1500 meter women's race in 3 minutes, six seconds (6:14). At (7:00) the women's figure skating event is shown. Quite a bit different than the modern event that's for sure!
At 8:44 a sled dog race is shown. At 10:41 the intimidating ski jump, won by Birger Ruud of Norway with a distance of 218 feet. The 2-man bob sled is seen at 12:44. This event was won by the Stevens Brothers of the USA with a time of just under 4 minutes, 20 seconds.

Prepping Lake Placid for the 1980 Olympics - AT&T Archives
See more from the AT&T Archives at
The first Olympics to be transmitted via television globally were the 1964 Innsbruck Games, carried via the Telstar satellite, which was engineered by the Bell System. AT&T's involvement with bringing the Olympics to the world continued in 1980 with new transmission facilities and one of the very first lightwave systems in the United States.
Lightwave, more commonly known as fiber optic transmission, had only been tested in Connecticut and Chicago when it was installed in Lake Placid for the 1980 Winter Olympics. The fiber optic system proved remarkably adaptable to extremes in temperature — when other types of cabling required recalibration of equipment, the lightguide system did not. The system was able to handle multiple camera feeds via microwave transmission to the Comstar satellite.
AT&T's assistance to Olympics broadcasts didn't end in 1980. AT&T managed the video and audio transmission facilities for NBC for the Seoul and Calgary Olympics in 1988. At the Nagano Games in 1998, the first application of digital broadcast technology was provided by the company to CBS, for television. At the Sydney Games in 2000, the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, and the Athens Games in 2004, AT&T arranged the satellite transmissions for NBC. And for Salt Lake City, AT&T built a new network of 8,000 trunk lines, dozens of new base stations, and the internal Olympics broadband network that linked 36 locations during the Games.

Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid, NY 2019
While visiting the Adirondacks during Labor Day weekend 2019, we took a day trip up to Lake Placid city and to Whiteface Mountain, home of the 1932 & 1980 Winter Olympics.
What breathtaking views from the summit. You can drive up close to the summit, via Veterans Memorial Highway which is full of wonderful views, and then park at the end by the castle gift shop/ restaurant.
From the parking at the top of Veterans Memorial Highway, visitors can either enter a tunnel in the mountain to ride the elevator up to the summit, or there's the option to hike up to the summit.
This is a video of our hike up to the summit and the incredible views, and on a clear day one can see Vermont and Montreal, Canada.
