Grand Coulee Dam, Washington USA - Two Minute Travel by Continental Drifters
Have you ever looked at a dam and wondered how it works? What’s going on behind those giant walls?
Grand Coulee Dam is known as North America’s Largest Masonry Structure, so we were curious about it. Since the dam offers tours we decided to take a look.
For more travel stories check out ContinentalDrifters.ca
Built between 1933 and 1975 the dam is 550 feet tall, from the 500 foot wide polished granite base,
The dam is so big it’s got a paved two lane road across the top. The road is closed to traffic, but tours are given special access.
On one side of the top of the dam you look into Lake Roosevelt. it’s actually is actually the Columbia River backed up behind Grand Coulee Dam. Those giant grates? They keep trees, logs and large pieces of debris from getting sucked in and jamming up the works inside.
Speaking of inside, after heading down hundreds of feet in a fast moving elevator, you get to the old generators. Still churning out massive amount of power these babies are the originals, put in when the dam was built. More recently a third power house was built which generates much more power, and is way more efficient.
When you include the that third power house, Grand Coulee Dam is now almost 1 mile long.
Back on top, and to the other side of that paved road… get your stomach ready for this… you can look straight down the face of the dam to the much shallower river below.
The Grand Coulee Dam sits deep in the Columbia River Gorge of North
Central Washington. It is located about 1.5 h drive west of Spokane, nearly 2 hours drive South of Canada's border, and about 4 has drive east of Seattle.

A look at hydroelectric power, shipping, irrigation and salmon fishing on the mighty Columbia River during the 1940's
The Columbia River is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region of North America.[9] The river rises in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It flows northwest and then south into the US state of Washington, then turns west to form most of the border between Washington and the state of Oregon before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The river is 1,243 miles (2,000 km) long, and its largest tributary is the Snake River. Its drainage basin is roughly the size of France and extends into seven U.S. states and a Canadian province.
By volume, the Columbia is the fourth-largest river in the United States; it has the greatest flow of any North American river draining into the Pacific. The river's heavy flow and its relatively steep gradient gives it tremendous potential for the generation of electricity. The 14 hydroelectric dams on the Columbia's main stem and many more on its tributaries produce more hydroelectric power than those of any other North American river.
The Columbia and its tributaries have been central to the region's culture and economy for thousands of years. They have been used for transportation since ancient times, linking the many cultural groups of the region. The river system hosts many species of anadromous fish, which migrate between freshwater habitats and the saline Pacific Ocean. These fish—especially the salmon species—provided the core subsistence for natives; in past centuries, traders from across western North America traveled to the Columbia to trade for fish. .

Visit Grand Coulee Dam, Columbia River, Washington, United States
Grand Coulee Dam is a gravity dam on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington built to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation water. It was constructed between 1933 and 1942, originally with two power plants. A third power station was completed in 1974 to increase its energy production. It is the largest electric power-producing facility in the United States.[3]
The proposal to build the dam was the focus of a bitter debate during the 1920s between two groups. One wanted to irrigate the ancient Grand Coulee with a gravity canal and the other supported a high dam and pumping scheme. Dam supporters won in 1933, but for fiscal reasons the initial design was for a low dam 290 ft (88 m) high which would generate electricity, but not support irrigation. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and a consortium of three companies called MWAK (Mason-Walsh-Atkinson Kier Company) began construction that year. After visiting the construction site in August 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began endorsing the high dam design which, at 550 ft (168 m) high, would provide enough electricity to pump water to irrigate the Columbia Basin. The high dam was approved by Congress in 1935 and completed in 1942; the first water over-topped its spillway on June 1 of that year. For more info, visit this link:

Grand Coulee Dam and Sun Lakes Dry Falls State Park - Washington State
Like and Share!
The city of Coulee Dam lies on the northern upstream side of Grand Coulee Dam. It straddles both sides of the Columbia River, both above and below the dam. The builders of the houses and businesses lying at the base of the spillway appear to have placed their faith in the sturdiness of a dam built to last thousands of years!
Dry Falls
Considered the world’s greatest waterfall without water, Dry Falls is the “skeletal remains” of a waterfall that once cascaded nearly 400 feat, filling a chasm 3.5 miles wide. The water came from the cataclysmic Missoula Floods at the end of the last ice age. Today, Dry Falls can be visited by a viewpoint off Route 17, or via trails and roads inside Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park.

S.216, Spokane Tribe of Indians of the Spokane Reservation Equitable Compensation Act
The U.S. House of Representatives debates S.216, the Spokane Tribe of Indians of the Spokane Reservation Equitable Compensation Act, on Monday, December 16, 2019.
The bill compensates the tribe for the loss of its lands to the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state. About 2,500 acres of valuable lands were destroyed by the federal government's actions.
The Grand Coulee Dam and the energy it produces has been a financial boon to the United States and the citizens of the Northwest, said Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico), who led debate on the measure in her chamber. It is now time to make whole the Spokane Tribe for their sacrifice.
The House passed S.216 by a voice vote under a suspension of the rules. The bill already cleared the U.S. Senate so all that's needed for it to become law is President Donald Trump's signature.

Spring Canyon Ranch
Spring Canyon Ranch is a beautiful 3,300 acre property located 3 miles west of Helper, Utah and 6 miles east of Scofield Reservoir offering hunting, recreational, and historical opportunities to any of its visitors. There is marketable timber and springs found throughout the property to water the livestock and game. Game trail cameras have photographed mule deer bucks scoring in the high 100's and a bull elk which scored 395 has been harvested. Additional game found on the ranch includes cougar, bear, turkey and ruffed grouse. he ranch seems larger when it is viewed on a map because it controls access to more than 10,000 acres of state, BLM, and Forest Service land. The owner negotiated a Conservation Easement with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources when the ground was purchased in 2002. A right of first refusal within the conservation agreement has been waived off by the DWR and will not affect the Buyer. Buck and bull tags are available through the annual draw in this limited entry unit (elk) or they may be drawn by those with Utah lifetime hunting licenses (deer). Cougar, bear, and turkey tags may be drawn. Cow elk hunting with depredation elk tags made available by the DWR has become a successful hunting activity. The ranch is a popular place for shed horn hunters.
Boat Trip Up Lake Chelan
Description
Lake Lenore, Washington (from a drone and on foot)
The Grand Coulee which stretches from the Grand Coulee Dam all the way down to Soap lake is the centerpiece of the Channeled Scablands of Washington formed by great ice age flood events. In this video, we will see Lake Lenore, an alkaline lake situated in the southern reaches of the Grand Coulee canyon system. If I seem somewhat out of breath in the cave, I should have taken a breather after carrying a Zhiyun Crane gimbal plus camera/mic while climbing the side of the cliffs! Enjoy!
