The Beautiful Colchuck Lake Hike, Leavenworth, Washington, PNW, USA
The Colchuck Lake hike is undoubtedly one of the PNW's best and is VFC's favorite, aside from what sits beyond the lakes in the Enchantments.
Sitting at the gateway to the Enchantments, as the slopes of Asgard Pass dive down into the glacial green waters of this beautiful lake. Surrounded by multiple mountain peaks and attainable only by a respectable hiking climb, this mountain paradise is a must-see if you are in the area of Washington's Bavarian town of Leavenworth. Even if you are not, it's certainly worth the drive from anywhere in the state.
It is certainly one of the more crowded in Washington State, especially when you decide to go on a Saturday in the summer, but part of the hiking experience in the PNW is exchanging pleasantries and exchanging small conversation with others who share a love for the outdoors as you do, by making these journeys.
The West Cascades were covered in rain and clouds on this day, so VFC hit the road and drove the 3+ hours to the heavenly sunshine and fresh waters of Colchuck. It was very worth it, needless to say.
The water was cold, the sun was sweet, and VFC was in heaven.
Ah yeah.

Jade Lake Hike - Washington State
Jade Lake, located above Marmot Lake in the Cascade Mountain range of Washington State is magical, with bright azure colored water from Lynch Glacier and a towering mountain backdrop. The scramble route above Marmot Lake can be challenging when the rocks are coated with ice, but for those with mountaineering skills that wish to enjoy the essence of the Pacific Northwest in complete solitude, going there in mid October can be a once in a lifetime experience.

WA State Homecoming Adventure: Part 3 (The Granite Falls Fish Ladder)
In July of 2017 I had the opportunity to take a “homecoming trip” to WA State after over 5 1/2 years. In part 3 of this series we’ll check out a quick, easy stop just outside of Granite Falls, WA. “The Fish Ladder” is a cool spot worth checking out if you’re in the area. Boasting sheer cliffs, powerful moving water, beautiful falls and interesting rock formations, it’s a great place to swing by before or after conquering one of the bigger hikes in the area, or maybe after grabbing breakfast at one of the quaint local restaurants or coffee stands. The Pacific Northwest is an amazing place, especially when you consider that there are places like this “just off the side of the road!”
Later on in the series I’ll take you on the second of two great hikes just outside my hometown (with more scenery that will blow you away), we’ll spend a little more time with my family and I’ll share some more of the sights and sounds of this “diamond in the rough” little town I’ve only come to love more as the years have gone by. No matter where I roam the PNW runs deep in my roots, and I hope this series will help others to see why. Thanks for watching!
Hiking Granite Mountain - Washington State 2017
On this day (May 2017), I hiked and explored Granite Mountain located in Snoqualmie Region, Washington State along the I-90. The views from the summit are astonishing, however, it comes at a price with the mountain nearly 1000 feet gain per mile. The hike is about 8.6 miles round trip and its highest point is 5,629 feet (1,716 meters). This is an extremely tough hike but worth the views if anyone makes it to the top of the summit. Also, dogs are allowed on the hike, however, must be kept on a leash.

Kelcema lake
Kelcema lake is a short hike and a small lake that is big on scenery. The morning drive east of Granite Falls on the Mountain Loop Highway past Silverton was pleasantly interrupted by a camera shy doe and her two fawns. Once on trail the flora included fritillaria (chocolate lily), lichen, grandfather moss, heather, penstemon, and orchids (coral root). Weathered snags amid the old cedars, rock, and waterfalls invite you to meditate in the reflections of a clear alpine lake. They are all nestled under the gaze of bald mountain. Views of Devils peak and sounds of small falls that peek-a-boo when you drive off beckon to to stay a little longer when driving the road back. If this was quick excursion, you'll say to yourself, I should have planned to stay longer.

PCT- White Pass to Shoe Lake Area, Goat Rocks Wilderness, WA 072415
Another PCT day hike, this time with a stay at White Pass Village Inn, a great affordable place to lodge for day hikes. The hike started along a road used for Nordic skiing in winter the up a small pathway to the PCT, soon crossing US 12 to the trail head, then up through Canadian Zone forest to the Goat Rocks wilderness boundary near Ginnette Lake, then into more Hudsonian zone forest and meadows, the junction with Chair Lift Trail, then back out of the wilderness adjacent the Basin Quad chair lift, then back into the wilderness near Hogback Mountain, traverse a rocky open slope above Miriam Lake (where a friendly marmot greeted me), crest a divide and POW! Shoe Lake and the Goat Rocks appear. I did not go down to the lake, but walked up to the top of the small peak just to it's west. What a view! Great weather made it even better and no bugs to speak of!

Stampede Pass via NF-7030, Greenwater Washington
Stampede Pass is a mountain pass through the Cascade Range just south of Snoqualmie Pass in Washington. Its importance to transportation lies almost entirely with railroading, as no paved roads cross it. The pass was originally created to build and maintain the railways that traveled in both directions across the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. This route will take you over over the pass on many different forest service roads. The roads are fairly well maintained and the pass can be completed by any suv or truck. The incredible views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding Cascade Mountian range makes this 30 mile trip well worth the time. The roads are wide enough for vehicles coming the opposite direction to pass.

What I Love about Backpacking - Lake Dorothy Washington State Hike
I've been backpacking for 60 years now, since I was 5. What I love about backpacking is waking up in our cozy sleeping bag by a beautiful, peaceful lake up in the mountains. I love the smells of the forests and meadows, the sounds of birds and distant waterfalls, fresh coffee and pancakes in the morning, views of cliffs and snow covered mountains, and a refreshing swim in a sparkling clear mountain lake.
Lake Dorothy, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of Washington State is a fairly easy hike, 2 miles each way with an 800’ elevation gain, a good beginner backpacking destination, within a 2 hour drive from Seattle. It gets rather busy with hikers on summer weekends, so we did a 3 day trip midweek in late summer, when there are less people and bugs. I watch the weather forecast and bug reports on WTA for the best time and place to go, and if there are forest fires in the area, the smoke forecast too.
I’m so thankful we found the Klymit Double Wide air mattress. It’s lightweight and durable, and we add an eggshell foam pad on top of that for a truly comfortable night’s sleep when backpacking. You can buy one at

2015-07-22 Leavenworth Waterfront Park Trails
After a killer alpine hike the day before, I needed some easy walking so went on a few easy, short trails. This one is quite nice, located in the very popular town of Leavenworth. But the trails were not crowded, so most visitors were probably busy sampling the German Beers in town. If you have pets and or children, I highly recommend this beautiful set of trails for the river views and the historic markers along the way.
Cape Flattery Trail, Neah Bay Washington State, Makah Nation
Hike to the northwesternmost point in the continental United States. Here, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the Pacific, Cape Flattery protrudes into a sea of tumultuous waters. A land of dramatic headlands, sea stacks, and deep narrow coves, Cape Flattery exhibits sheer rugged beauty. Scores of seabirds ride the surf and scavenge the sea stacks. Watch for whales and sea lions too. And the sunsets... they're simply divine.
Thanks to the Makah Indian Nation, the stewards of this land, a well-constructed trail leads to this remote corner of the Northwest. Start through a mist-drenched forest of Sitka spruce. Utilizing boardwalks and steps, drop to a series of promontories that provide stunning vistas of rugged Cape Flattery. At 0.75 mile reach the final viewing platform teetering on the edge of terra firma.
Admire the cape's abrupt contours of sea stacks, caves, and forbidding sheer cliffs. A hostile environment of strong currents, swift breezes, and frequent storms-all forces responsible for creating this stunning landscape.
But nature has a way of adapting to such brutal conditions. Look carefully at this intimidating world where sea meets land and you'll see life. Lots of life! Puffins and guillemots surf the turbulent waters. Murres nest in the fortresslike cliffs. Oystercatchers probe the tidal pools left behind on offshore reefs. Sea otters, once on the brink of extinction, bob in the protected coves. Whales can often be spotted farther out.
People, too, have adapted to this landscape, which is often draped in fog and receives over 100 inches of annual rainfall. Directly offshore is Tatoosh Island. Named for a Makah chief, this 20-acre treeless island once served as a summer fishing camp for the Makahs. The U.S. Coast Guard first constructed a lighthouse on the island in 1857. The current structure is automated. Now only sea lions, seals, and scads of seabirds live on Tatoosh.
The Makahs have declared Cape Flattery a nature sanctuary-an enlightened move for this wild world sitting on the brink of the continent.
Driving Directions:
From Port Angeles follow US 101 west for 5 miles to the junction with State Route 112. Turn right (west) on SR 112, continuing for 64 miles to the community of Neah Bay. (Alternatively, take US 101 to Sappho and drive SR 113 north to SR 112 and then on to Neah Bay. This way is longer, but not as curvy.) Just past the Makah Tribal Museum is Washburn's, where you can purchase the required recreation pass. Continue west on Bayview Avenue for 1 mile, following signs for Cape Flattery and Beaches.Turn left on Fort Street, and in 0.1 mile turn right on 3rd Street. In another 0.1 mile turn left on Cape Flattery Road. In 2.5 miles pass the Tribal Center. Proceed for another 5.1 miles to the trailhead. Privy available.
Lake Grace of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness
Starting from the White Pine Creek Trailhead just off Hwy 2, continue 2.5 miles on the White Pine Creek Trail to Wildhorse Creek Trail for Frosty Pass. After 8.5 miles of a gradual climb there will be a junction for Lake Grace. The last 1.5 miles is a very steep switchback climb. This tough trail is worth the reward! Lower and Upper Grace Lakes are reflective and have views overlooking the Enchantments. We camped 2 nights here as a base camp and did not see another hiker until we were leaving (and halfway back to the car). If you are looking for an Enchantment-like but dog-friendly backpack in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, we highly recommend this hike! This trip was completed July 2017.
