Lakewood Garden Mausoleum
Built into the hillside to preserve Lakewood Cemetery's pastoral quality, the Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum designed by Joan M. Soranno, FAIA, of HGA Architects and Engineers quietly embraces the landscape while offering a contemplative interior experience. Clad in split-faced gray granite and white mosaic-tile marble, the Mausoleum unfolds horizontally on its site within three rectilinear crypt pods that recall the many family mausoleums throughout the historic cemetery. Natural light and a connection to nature strengthen the relationship between the spiritual and the earth-bound, where form, space and light coalesce around a collective need to remember.

Douglas M. Englund - Graveside Memorial
Englund, Douglas Marz Passed away on November 22, 2017, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Doug was born in Minneapolis in 1940. He attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Minnesota. He retired as a Colonel after serving in the U.S. Army for 30 years, during which he served two tours in Vietnam, and was a foreign affairs officer assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, the chief of staff for the On-Site Inspection Agency, and the director of operations for the United Nations Special Commission in Iraq. His subsequent civil service career included roles as the NASA representative in Moscow and as Director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Doug enjoyed traveling, reading, music, progressive politics, his dogs, and especially spending time with his family and friends at his home on Lake Minnetonka. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Kathryn. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann; children, Amy, Todd (Nikki), and Lara; grandchildren, Madison and Alex Douglas, and Nathan and Jack Englund; former son-in-law, Scott Douglas; brothers, Gary (Carole), Robert (Sharon), and Steven (Cyndi Coulter); many nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. A graveside service will be held at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis on Friday, December 22, 2017, at 1:30 pm followed by a reception at Lord Fletcher's at 3:00 pm. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be given to the University of Minnesota Foundation, UMF MDS Fund 11955, 200 Oak Street SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455, to further the leukemia research of his dedicated medical team. Also included are Minnesotans who died while working as security personnel for companies contracted by the United States Department of Defense and a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93.
They were assisted in their project by hundreds of members of the Minnesota Patriot Guard from around the state, some of whom also traveled to Arlington National Cemetery. Patriot Guard Riders from other states also located cemeteries and gravesites interring the remains of Minnesota servicemen, and took pictures on behalf of the Military Salute Project.

Haunted History: The Darling Church sat in Little Falls, MN and was established in 1893. On April 10th 1909 Annie Kintop, a young woman around her twenties, was brutally murdered in the Darling area. Blood stains were found inside of the church and her body was found in a nearby swamp. It is not known who killed Annie so the murder is still unsolved. This video covers the history and lore quite well.(
Reports: Annie's apparition has been reportedly seen on the grounds along with, screams from the woods, sounds of crying, being touched and many other reports of that nature.

History of Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the largest city by population in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and the county seat of Hennepin County. The origin and growth of the city was spurred by the proximity of Fort Snelling, the first major United States military presence in the area, and by its location on Saint Anthony Falls, which provided power for sawmills and flour mills.
Fort Snelling was established in 1819, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, and soldiers began using the falls for waterpower. When land became available for settlement, two towns were founded on either side of the falls: Saint Anthony, on the east side, and Minneapolis, on the west side. The two towns later merged into one city in 1872. Early development focused on sawmills, but flour mills eventually became the dominant industry. This industrial development fueled the development of railroads and banks, as well as the foundation of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Through innovations in milling techniques, Minneapolis became a world-leading center of flour production, earning the name Mill City. As the city grew, the culture developed through its churches, arts institutions, the University of Minnesota, and a famous park system designed by Theodore Wirth.
Although the sawmills and the flour mills are long gone, Minneapolis remains a regional center in banking and industry. The two largest milling companies, General Mills and the Pillsbury Company, now merged under the General Mills name, still remain prominent in the Twin Cities area. The city has rediscovered the riverfront, which now hosts parkland, the Mill City Museum, and the Guthrie Theater.

This last-minute and thus poorly planned segment of our 6,300 mile cross-country trip was included as a genealogical exploratory visit to my grandmother Dora Etta Hutchinson Smith's hometown of Enderlin, ND. She was born in Enderlin in 1896 while her father, James Hutchinson, was working there for the SOO Line Railroad.
The James Hutchinson family resided in Enderlin until sometime before 1910 when the family moved to Finley, Washington. Dora, a brother, and a sister returned to Enderlin around January of 1913 after their mother passed away. They resided with their grandmother, Marietta Ginger Hutchinson Mattison, who had been operating a boarding house on 6th Avenue in Enderlin, renting rooms mostly to SOO Line railroad employees.
Dora moved to Michigan in 1914 after marrying George T. Smith (Sr.), a SOO Line employee. Dora's uncle Mort Hutchinson, who had moved to Enderlin around 1906, also worked for the SOO Line railroad until around 1910 when he moved to Washington State as well. Marietta, also known around town as Grandma Mattison, passed away in 1929.
We found an RV campsite in Casselton, ND, operated by the Days Inn hotel chain. This was the closest campsite we could find near Enderlin. We headed to Casselton from New Lisbon, WI after spending the night there having left Washington Island, WI the day before.
Enderlin resides in the heart of flatland North Dakota farm country as you will see as we travel from Casselton to Enderlin. From Casselton, ND we drove south on Hwy 18, then a bit west again on Hwy 18/46 eventually arriving in Enderlin a little over an hour later. I found it a bit disconcerting that unlike here in Lakewood, CO...where we can tell direction by looking for the presence of the Rocky Mountains which designates west, there were no mountains with which to guide us on our way. Grateful for GPS!
Early in Enderlin's history the town became a major hub for the SOO Line Railroad, complete with a roundhouse and major steam locomotive maintenance sheds serving the SOO Line Railroad's steam locomotives. Enderlin was a bustling railroad town in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Enderlin also was...and still is...a community providing grain and other crops for the country from the area's hard working farmers. The SOO Line Railroad provided the means to bring the crops to market. Today the SOO Line Railroad is no longer. Its assets have been purchased and since replaced by the Canadian Pacific Railroad which now carries on the work of its once famous predecessor, the SOO Line Railroad. The roundhouse and maintenance sheds are gone...diesel locomotives don't require near the maintenance as did the early steam locomotives. Vestiges of the SOO railroad's peak presence can still be seen by visiting Enderlin's Historical Society & Museum which houses many objects from that period. The railroad continues to play a major role in Enderlin's commerce.
Included in this video are just a few photos taken during our visit to the Enderlin Historical Society & Museum, along with a few family photos of our relatives who lived in Enderlin back in the day. We owe a special thanks to Ms. Susan Schlecht who drove into town from her home just to open the museum for us during our short stay in Enderlin. We were stuck with having only that day to visit, and Susan graciously accommodated us by opening the museum for us on that day and provided us with an excellent guided tour of the museum's contents! There's so much more to see in their museum...a few hours simply didn't do the visit justice!
We also included a few photos taken around town during our visit. Not being familiar with the community, I can see as an afterthought I should have taken additional photos to include for example the town library and school. Enderlin is a small farm community, the future of which could go either way...either by experiencing sustained growth, or by slowly diminishing into a community shy of the many businesses and commerce required to support a town. Time will tell. In any case, the folks of Enderlin are wonderful! They maintain the Dakota pioneer spirit and know well all about hard work and survival as is the case with most Dakotans I've known over the years. It's a hardy folk that can endure the harsh winters of the Dakota plains!
