Lal Bazar (Kangchenjunga Shopping Complex) Gangtok, Sikkim
Established in the year 1956 as an open market for the people of Gangtok to display all their produces, Lal Bazaar has evolved over the years as a shopping complex. Renamed as Kanchenjunga Shopping Complex, this market is where you will find many diverse items. Located quite close to MG Marg, the vegetable market at Lal Bazaar is very popular among the residents of the city. You get good quality, fresh vegetables and fruits here. Sunday is the day when the market comes alive. People from all parts of the city come here, and it is quite evident that they come from different ethnic backgrounds. The colorful dresses and diverse languages spoken make Lal Bazaar a perfect testament for India’s ‘Unity in Diversity.' Lal Bazaar offers a good selection of cottage cheese, organic vegetables, Alpine cheese and churpi, a cheese made out of yak’s milk. Beautiful pottery, prayer flags, traditional Nepalese knives and baskets made out of bamboo and cane are a few of the other items for sale at this market.

Marg is a Hindi word which stands for Road. So essentially MG Marg means MG Road ... all Indians will know that always an important road (if not the most important road) in any city or township in India would be named as Mahatma Gandhi Road or MG Road. Gangtok is no exception and thus the name of this road which is considered the town center of Gangtok.
The road and the area around it has transformed over the years. It is now more like a long stretch of open mall or boulevard square where locals and tourists take leisure stroll or just sit and relax on one of the many benches laid along the middle and both sides of the road to soak in the ambiance.
The road is lined up with glittering shops of all types, restaurants and bars on both sides. Many tourists take a table in a restaurant and watch from there the activities on the street below. It's literally like a carnival like atmosphere out here. The annual Gangtok Food and Culture Festival is held here at M G Marg in December.
The entire area is free of litter, smoke and vehicle. It's a pedestrian only zone and vehicles are not allowed on this approximately 1km stretch of the road.
Smoking is not allowed either although I could not find any signs saying so. It seems all locals know it and will immediately warn you if you try smoking here. However I did notice a board right at one end saying 'Welcome to M.G. Marg, Spit and Litter Free Zone'.
In line with government's green initiative, all buildings on both sides of this road are painted green. The Statue of Unity overlooks MG Marg. The statue comprises of the figures of Bhutia Chieftain Khye Bumsa, the Lepcha leader Thetong Tek and his wife Ngo-Kong-ngol.
The statue depicts peace, love and harmony. About midway is an imposing statue of Mahatma Gandhi. There are Victorian lamps along this road. When lit up after dark, the entire place looks magical.
As part of Gangtok Annual Food and Culture Festival that takes place in the month of December, many different food stalls are set up at the Titanic park in MG Road, cultural shows take place here opposite to Sikkim Tourism & Civil Aviation Department where ethnic dance performances and musical shows are organized.
While there are numerous restaurants and bars on this road, some of the well known ones include the Baker's Cafe (great for coffee, pastries, patties, momos & other snack items), The Roll House located on a narrow alley off MG Road making delicious Rolls of different types, Parivar - a pure veg restaurant which almost always remains full, PUB25 - a popular pub, Rasoi - another upscale vegetarian restaurant etc.
MG Marg is also the main market area of Gangtok. There are all sorts of shops here including souvenir & gift stores, clothing stores (for men & women), handicraft items, shoe shops, and even Pharmacies and convenience stores.
Shops in MG Marg are open from 8am to 7pm. The market here is closed on Tuesdays. At one end of MG Marg is the Sikkim Tourism Center. Further down towards Tibet road is the taxi stand where you get taxis for local sightseeing tours.
There are public pay & use toilets here (although they often remain quite dirty due to lack of water it seems. These toilets are also used as smoke rooms by some locals). Although smoking is not allowed on the main road, there are plenty of stalls along this road selling cigarettes - quite an irony.

Lal Bazaar, Gangtok: A glimpse of Sikkim's Kitchen | SIKKIM
Lal Bazaar is the soul of Sikkim’s kitchen. It is where local women do their shopping and churn out recipes for their daily meals. Wandering through the vegetable market you are unconsciously taking a peek into Sikkim’s kitchen. Fresh vegetables and all sorts of items are being brought from all over Sikkim to be sold here. Lal Baazar is more like a flea market where you get almost everything from apparel to eatables. It is just few steps down from the dashing M.G Marg, which is the posh shopping area in Sikkim. Most goods other than the vegetables and food items are shipped from Siliguri, so it doesn’t lend a distinct character. But the vegetable (sabzi) market on the first floor looked exotic and unique. You’ll get some of the finest Yak ghee and mushroom here. You’ll get some of the finest Yak ghee and mushroom here.

Our travel and food in sikkim was fun, had great time in Gangtok...If you have any experience of Gangtok in terms of sightseeing or food, do share that in comments below…
Travelling cost: Refer to EP 1 description section on how below cost is calculated.
Min cost to reach Gangtok: Rs 500.
Hotel: Rs 1500 per day.
Food Rs 500 one meal
Total cost of Day 0: Rs 2500
Day1 : Cab for local sightseeing for 8 hours Rs 2500.
You may want to take share cab for point to point travelling but then you can't travel to all tourist destinations.
Example from MG marg you can take a share cab for trolley point by paying Rs 20.. but you can't go to Hanuman Tok on share cab as on that route no share cab.,
OLA and uber taxi service not available.
you : can take cab for travelling from one point to another , but that's expensive they charge anything from Rs 200 to Rs 400...
Day 1 :
cab : 2500
food 1000
hotel: 1500
Total cost of Day 1: Rs 5000.
Above cost will apply for Day 0 and Day 1 will be 2500 plus 5000 equals to 7500.
I paid much higher cost because i had exclusive taxi all the time, i stayed in 3 category hotel which was expensive.
As always i love to read your comments and reply back on them… thanks for your time…
