Malaysia l Sabah Borneo Land Below The Wind
Travel to Malaysia! Sabah is one of the 13 member states of Malaysia, and is its easternmost state. It is located on the northern portion of the island of Borneo. It is the second largest state in the country after Sarawak, which it borders on its southwest. It also shares a border with the province of East Kalimantan of Indonesia in the south.
The capital of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton. Sabah is often referred to as Land Below The Wind, a phrase used by seafarers in the past to describe lands south of the typhoon belt. Sabah - The Land Below the Wind
Sabah, The name just rolls off my lips. It says a lot with just a little. It is real, but it feels like a dream. all you can hear is nature around you, the wind blowing, the chirp of a bird. This is the kind of feeling that makes me feel glad to be alive and in that place. That is the feeling that Sabah gives you. The feeling that you are truly alive.

Borneo: the land below the wind
I visited the reefs, mangroves and rainforests of Sabah, Borneo to learn how to study tropical forest ecology. On the way I saw sharks, orangutans and even royalty! See this as a behind the scenes of a rainforest researcher, or yet another reason why you should apply to read Biology at Oxford University (other universities are available!).
The reef was in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, the mangrove forest was at the Kota Kinabalu Wetlands Centre and the virgin rainforest was in Danum Valley. Apologies that the video quality isn't as high as possible - I didn't fancy lugging my DSLR through the tropics in 100% humidity!
'The land below the wind' is a traditional phrase used by sailors describing Sabah as it sits south of the typhoon belt.

Borneo, Land below the Wind, Malaysia
Borneo is an island that is owned by 3 countries -- Indonesia, Malaysia & Brunei.
Our entry to Borneo was through Tawau, which is about a 4 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, and is a very cheap internal flight. Our first destination was Mabul Island; an island in the Celebes sea which was close to Sipadan, the ultimate destination of our travel.
Arriving in Tawau was like going back 50 years; the airport, the buildings, the customs and everything about it felt extremely colonial. It was almost like a museum of British History. From Tawau, we got picked up by a van organized by our Hotel and driven to Semporna, approximately an hour and a half drive through a jungle road. From there it was another hour or so by boat to actually get to Mabul Island.
The Diving in Sipadan was fantastic; it was like being in a 5 start buffet, you didn't know where to look. The visibility is practically always awesome due to the volcanic nature of the islands, and because of this same formation there is very little sand in the water. This means macro life such as sharks and turtles can enjoy being there without worrying about getting sand in their gills etc.
All week we saw hundreds of turtles, white tip sharks & massive shoals of bumpheads, napoleons and barracuda. Hanging out on the resort was great too, the vibe is awesome there and the village is an interesting contrast to that with its humbling yet charming poverty.
After Scuba Diving in Sipadan we flew to the North of the Island to Kota Kinabalu, famous for its mountain. During our stay there we visited the jungles around the mountain, went rafting and saw a lot of monkeys & arangutangs. Borneo generally is an extremely rich place for bio diversity. Due to its positioning on the earth it has the ideal conditions for virtually any form of life.
Borneo has left a massive impact and impression on me, I will definitely try and go back there at some point in my life.
