Once known as 'Ratna-Dweepa' which means Gem Island, Sri Lanka is famous for its gems and is said to have the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other precious stones in the world. The island is abundant with jewellery and gem shops, but we decided to visit a local artisan family, to learn more about the crafting process, and have a go at making our own jewellery.

The Facets Sri Lanka International Gem & Jewellery Show 2017 had its 27th show take place on the 31st of August at BMICH, and had the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe, as a distinguished guest at the event.

Ibrahim Jewellers is one of the oldest gem and jewellery businesses in the country, having been in business since 1909, when Safa’s grandfather first opened a store in Colombo.
Following a sudden and unfortunate accident, Safa’s father had to relocate the store from Colombo to their family home, located on Church Street inside the Fort— and since 1978 this is where the store has been standing.
Safa inherited the store from his father, and manages the store himself while his son assists. Safa hopes that once he retires, his son will take ownership of the store.
“I am the third-generation proprietor of this store, and my son will be the fourth-generation proprietor if he takes over after me; that is a very rare occasion in family-owned businesses,” he noted.

Study Tour to Sri Lanka: The treasure island.
Sri Lanka is known for best qualities of gemstones mainly due to alluvial deposit since more than 2500 years ago and also known as world capital for Sapphires. Gem mines are mailnly located in southern and central province of Sri Lanka. The mines were mainly either in rice paddles where once ancient river used to flow, vegetable plantation, tea plantation, flowing river and especially the old river which have dried.
Highlights of Srilanka study tour visit:
Mine Visits
We experienced various mines as we visited Ratnapura district local mines (green rice fields), Pelmadulla mines 15 kms from main Ratnapura, Balangoda mines, Rakwana mines, Nuwara eliya and Meetiyagoda mines.
Manufacturing visits
Cutting & Polishing: Second was to take them to traditional cutting and polishing factories for practical experience.
Market Visit:
All the 3 markets of srilanka - Ratnapura market, Nivitigala market and Beruwala market.
Assorting department, exports,tading, heating treatment process, National gem & jewellery authority by srilankan government,
Also met the local association president who provided complete knowledge about the Sri Lankan trade.
Gem Museum Visit:
The Ratnapura gem museum collection.
Conference
Conference was organised with the Sri Lanka Gems & jewellery Association committee member (organisers of facet show) for the students of J K Diamonds Institute of Gems & Jewelry on “How to start gem trade from Sri Lanka and its policies”
For students it was a complete Mines to Market experience which is very rare to get without official permissions

Blue Sapphire In Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a world celebrated destination for valuable colored gems and is home to about 40 varieties of gems out of 85 varieties available in the whole world.
Gems of the corundum family are either star sapphires or rubies. When light falls on these stones a star effect is visible.
Blue Sapphire is Sri Lanka’s gem supreme and finest in the world.
3 main varieties of chrysoberyl gems are ordinary yellow green chrysoberyl , alexandrite and cat’s eye.
Spinal is a gem stone found in great abundance in Sri Lanka than either corundum or chrysoberyl. Some of the other gems stones are Almandine garnet, Amethyst , Aquarmarine , Quartz, Beryl , Moonstones , Topaz , Zircon , Tourmaline and Emerald.
All the natural gem stones have some or at least one impurity inside being natural. Like the sapphires Sri Lankan moonstones are the bluest you will find and the milky hue is rare.
Sri Lankan Gems are extremely popular among tourists. Gem shops are available in Ratnapura , Kandy , Galle , Colombo & many towns.
